Player Information Widget Posted: 07 Aug 2003 02:40 PM |
This is a VERY useful tool for players, both new and old, which is currently underused and something which many folks do not really know about.
If you "use" it it will bring forth a variety of options...... the first displaying a list of all players in game and their current location...... extremely useful for "bumping" into other players on the server without PMing them asking to form a party etc....
At the same time there are numerous other features, enabling you to announce you are looking for a party to join, removing yourself from the said list, hiding your character level etc........
I encourage everyone to use/play with it..... EXTREMELY useful if you ask me :D Let me know your thoughts.
Cheers

| As an aside - if there's general need from you folks to customize it better (e.g., set it to LFG - looking for group - by default; hiding DM status; more other options etc.), let me know. |

We could also percolate this information up to the website, visible from the player list if you think that'd help.

A number of modifications are made: most notibly, you're no longer displayed by default. If you wish your character to be "bumped into", you have to declare yourself so after you enter.
Defaults: Invisible, Hide Class Levels, Hide DM, Looking for Group ON, Away from Keyboard OFF. |

BTW - if you folks would like to request more functionalities, feel free to post on this thread, or on the RandomScribblings thread under Builders (that's my 'diary' thrread).
Alignment comes to mind. I hope that won't be abused |

Re: Player Information Widget Posted: 02 Sep 2003 12:00 PM |
Not sure how others feel about this, but I personally would like players to be displayed by default. A number of people never use the widget, and since the new defaults have been implemented, there is almost always zero players displayed.
There could be a logical explanation for this: A players location could easily be divined in most cases by asking the local populace until you finally "bumped" into them. But if a player so wishes (using the widget to make their location invisible) they could take extra efforts to remain unnnoticed and unseen by the local populace.
I just miss being unable to bump into people, and its a bummer when there is 10 people playing and you can't find one of them.
If we don't change this, I hope everyone will take the time to activate their location with the widget unless you specifically do not want to be found by other players.

p.s. I hope alignment can't ever be displayed by the widget :)

The widget is completely an Out-of-Character construct - hence my "bump-into"s are always in quotations. If you folks all desire it to display your character by default, let me know and I'll change it.
As an alternative to alignment-displaying on the widget (which would again be strictly Out-of-Character, just like the Levels currently displayed), I'm tempted to do a large upgrade to the CharismaTip, so it works, well, outright better - and could involve things like Detect Evil for the paladins etc.. If any of you are interested in writing the specific options / non-implementational stuffs for that, contact me.

Re: Player Information Widget Posted: 02 Sep 2003 12:09 PM |
Definitely. I think that players should be on the PC list by default. It is very irritating to see 10-11 people on a server and not knowing where the heck they are.
...And I hope alignment is never displayed as well ;P The trouble with alignment is that it's the one area which can get attacked by other people telling you how to play your character. Oh, the joyous cries of "you can't do that, you're Lawful Good" and other such meta gaming ;) |

Re: Player Information Widget Posted: 02 Sep 2003 12:33 PM |
I agree, I think that players should be listed by default, sure at times the "bumping" is questionable, but for the most part people play it out really well. Also, there are a lot fewer people that don't want to be seen on there than otherwise. I am one of those people who don't want to be listed at the moment, due to some certain events of late. However, it is a simple matter to remove myself from the list, whereas having to show yourself evrytime you get on would get rather tiresome. Anyway, that's my take.

I agree. Being seen by default is better than having to show yourself when you login...I'm spending about a minute setting myself up on login now :P
(Unlock the camera, push back the fog, stop myself looking for group, show myself in the list).
IMHO, as usual. |

Why not use the camera hak, so you don't have to keep unlocking the camera and pushing back the fog? You can find it here
Oh yeah, I agree, PCs on by default, DMs off by default. ;)
