Sorry to leave so soon, but... Posted: 23 Jun 2005 02:36 PM |
When I first started playing Vives a week or so ago I was totally stunned at how beautifully crafted the server was. Absolutely one of the most visually detailed and immersive world I've ever been on, and I've been playing NWN online since it came out. After literally years of searching, I thought I'd finally found the server for me.
Then I got killed. I discovered that you cannot come back from the dead to play again unless someone else raises you. Realistic as this may be, I found it extremely irritating. The logic of it simply escapes me. How is a new player who doesn't know anyone supposed to get raised? There are already enough restrictions placed on players as it is to prevent powergaming and such that I felt not being able to return from death on your own was an unnecessary limitation. I'm sure the die-hard role-players don't have a problem with it, but if we started coding everything that was real life into the game we'd start having to make regular trips to the toilet or risk losing xp. It's a game, not life. The point is to have fun, although I realize of course that not everyone defines fun the same way.
Normally in such a case I just delete a server from my Favorites and move on, but I thought with Vives I would put my humble opinion out there to be considered in case anyone else felt the same way.
So, as much as I love role-playing, I won't be playing on Vives any longer because I do enjoy playing alone occasionally, and any server that makes this a virtual impossibility is trying too hard to cram its players into a mold in my opinion.
Sorry to leave so soon. It was fun while it lasted.

P.S.: In case this rule ever gets removed, someone please email me. |

Hmm......
Can you clarify what happened? You should have been able to repsawn properly and continue playing..... so it's very strange :/
You shouldn't need another person to raise you at all........... so sorry this might have happened to you, it's not our intention..... but if you could clarify further it would help us fix it :D

Well, I was killed and sent to the Fugue Plane. There I saw only two useable objects, a sign and a birdbath, neither of which did anything when I clicked on them. I sent a tell to another player asking how to return to life to play again. He (I'm pretty sure it was a guy) told me the only way to come back was to have someone else raise you one way or another, and that there was no way to come back on your own. That was pretty much it.
If there's something else I should have done, please tell me.

Hi :D
OK this is weirding me out a little ;)
There are no fugue planes at all in Vives, you respawn in a hospital or some other such location (depends where you might die) and then you're free to just head out and back into the World.
Could you let me know the exact name of the place you were, where this sign and birdbath were? then we can try to help you out........... best thing might be to pop in game as your character, a DM will see you and fix the situation.
Sorry for this ;)

Argh.
Argh. Argh. ARGH!
I am an idiot. Please forgive me. I was confusing Vives with another server I started playing at about the same time. All the comments about Vives being a great server still stand, but I got confused about the reason I quit. It was the other server with the annoying death rule. I quit Vives because it was too difficult for a low level character to earn gold.
This is what I get for playing NWN at 3:00 am. Sorry about the misunderstanding.

*chuckles* Actually, I've not found it too hard to earn gold on Vives compared to the other server I DM on, but fair enough . |

No worries it happens to us all ;)
As for being too difficult to get gold........ that's one of the first times I've heard this particular feedback.
Once advanced a number of levels through exploration etc......... then most folks have no particular issues :/ I guess you must have just had bad luck :(

Perhaps I'm doing something wrong, but as I said I've been playing NWN a long time and I was playing a ranger character who did advance a few levels. But I had to stop playing because I couldn't make enough gold to keep him alive.
Maybe I'll try again with a new character.
Of course, now I CAN'T play because I updated NWN, not expecting to return. :(

We're updating to 1.66 this Weekend (all being well :P)....... so you might like to give us a try then :)
Otherwise, I really hope you find the server you're looking for out there I't s a big community, and whilst nothing is ever perfect, you have an abundance of choice which might get you as close to your vision :D
Cheers!

Gold is REAL easy to get if you ask the right wealthy philantrophist dwarven wizards for a job.

I'd hate to see ya go And as to your gold issue, ask most anyone wearing a suit of armor that says "I'm rich, please rob me blind" They'll probably know where a penny or two can be found. |

*listens at the door and whispers to the others "i think he's gone" *
*enters the small room , puts an out of place birdbath into a cupboard and locks it , turns a sign on the door that reads "FUGUE PLANE" over to reveal "THE SISTERS" and sneaks out.*

Well, I've created a new character and done more exploring, and I see now that I was being a little impatient. Having taken more time to familiarize myself with Vives, it's now obvious that the economy is as carefully constructed as the rest of the server.
And so it is with great pleasure that I hereby declare Vives as "The Coolest Server In The Universe." I am thoroughly hooked. If I were to spend several years tearing out my hair to create the ideal server, it would be just like Vives. The more I play it, the more I love it.
Bravo, ladies and gentlemen! Thank you for making such an amazing server. I hope you all win the lottery or something. :)

It appears my second try was a waste of time. The DMs are rude and the mechanics of the server making playing here severely annoying and not much fun, so I'm quitting.

Umm, I am not sure I even want to ask...considering the content so far in this thread. But just for the record, no DM here seems to have the faintest idea what you are talking about? :0(
The only interaction has been brief bits of RP, like myself playing the trader in Midor a few days ago you had a chat with. Or a DM jumping you out when you were stuck somewhere. All of which seemed without issue, you even said thank you to me... *shrugs*
Well, good luck wherever you end up...

Yes, seems strange but can't really comment without instances.
I was the DM who jumped you when your PC got stuck, certainly don't recall any rudeness then. Regardless, good luck wherever you do find a home |
