Bah! Damn online gaming... Posted: 16 May 2005 08:14 AM |
Well, I missed the DM event Sunday and indeed even writing a post about it, because my computer was visciously slaughtered by WoW.
There I was one minute, merrily in the middle of a huge pvp bash on Warcraft, the next minute my computer had frozen and that was it.
It looks like my entire opperating system has somehow gone corrupt, or at least parts of it are missing, and I'm having to pay a little IT guy called Issac to come out tonight and try to fix it for me.
£100!
Gah! Online gaming!
I can't tell you how pleased the missus was to find out the PC was broken... |

It turned out that Issac looked the spitting image of Catweasel, wearing a hand-knitted cardigan, and when I offered him a drink? He only wanted a mug of hot water. He looked at me like I was the spawn of satan as I sat there drinking a can of coke.
Upshot of it all was, after 3 and a bit hours of my hard earn cash and many many hardwear tests and attempted fixes, that the entire hard disk needs to be wiped. Even that wasn't good enough, he had to erase the entire hard drive first, and is coming back tonight to re-format it and re-load windows etc.
To say I'm not happy would be an understatement. I'm not sure what I hate more at the moment - WoW for being the thing I was running when it happened, or computers in general just for being a pain in the neck more often that they are good for you.
Gah! So I still ain't gonna be online anytime soon...
AND I gotta download all the patches again! Gah! |

Well, you know it for the next crash now. Backup, and perhaps make a drive image after the reinstall. ;)
But why did he just delete everything, couldn´t he plug the HDD in another PC to get the data from it first...? |

In my experience, and admittedly this is only my experience, anyone who says they need to reformat your hard drive to fix the problem is either an idiot, incompetent, or taking you for a ride.
Almost unfailingly, it is a combination of the three.

| Yeah and beware anyone who looks like Catweasel, they just have to be dodgy.... although that said I saw someone who looked the dead spitting image of Mr. Claypole from rent a ghost the other day, most bizarre |

Yeah - he did try for 3 hours to get my data off to be fair. Wiping it was the last solution, other than paying for data recovery - which was WAY expensive. Apparently the crash did something like corrupting the file tree (I can't even remember the words he used now) and the method in which the drive was accesed and read. He had this little cradle thing to load my hard drive into, wouldn't work because its one of the new SATA hard drives, tried another way, tried something else, ARGH! In the end it came down to data recovery or wipe. Doesn't make me feel any better that he tried so hard though!
And Taulath - that probably WAS Mr Claypole. He was dead after all - so he wouldn't have aged at all since he was last on TV. |

He's coming back tonight to partition my HD into manageable sections (it was all in one 160G chunk before) and install everything into the first one, leaving the second to put my data in, and setting up a ghost windows in another as future backup (means nothing to me - sounds like he knows his stuff though). |

Well, to be honest, creating a partition for the OS and programs, another for the data and a third for backup can be done easily in the Windows XP installation process. And making a ghost image can either be done from Windows or with a tool like Norton Ghost. So, nothing he got a doctor title for. ;) But I guess 'data recovery' is a good way for him to earn some extra cash. You could still try to plug the HDD into a friend´s PC, and recover the data from there. All you need for a start is a working OS, and a SATA port. |

Funnily enough, as I was reading that post I though exactly the same thing.
A friend of mine claims to be an IT guy and his response to everything is "You need to format the harddrive". In fact on one occassion he was convinced I needed to format the harddrive and no amount of persuasion would move him.
That was of course until I managed to deduce the problem itself. A CPU which was burnt!
So in short, "You need to Format the harddrive" is IT jargon for "I have no idea what to do, so this sounds like a good solution." |
Never argue with an idiot. They drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.

As the saga continues.....
(bah! this is going on longer than a DM event!)
The latest news is that after Catweasel erased the contents of my hard drive, then reformated it and installed windows again, it froze like before and then on boot up refused to find the hard drive. About 3 hours of testing later, the deduction is that my hard drive has actually broken and so I'm now awaiting a new one.
Well, as he put it, it's either the sata hard drive, or the sata cable, or the sata connection on the mother board. So, the most likely thing seemed the hard drive - thus a new one will soon be winging its way to me.
Did I mention I hate computers? |

So Catweasal couldn´t just bring another SATA cable and drive to test the motherboard and the currently used cable...? At least he´s taking his time to figure out a HDD 'might' be broken. |

Catweasel sounds more like Weasel to me. I bet the first thing he said was that it might be a "caching problem". Hell, that's what I do. |

Nope - Catweasel doesn't have a SATA drive. He was very sad when he discovered he couldn't just load it into his 'cradle' which turned out to only be suitable for IDE drives. He was also 'in awe' of my Athlon64 3.4 processer - so I'm begining to think that I may have called the wrong pc repair company.... I should have sussed him at first when he arrived in an arc...
So now I have on order a Maxtor 6B250SO (for those of you that care!) and I took the opportunity to snag myself another 512M DDR ram while I was ordering stuff anyway. Should be here some time today, and Catweasel is coming back tommorow to put it all back together for me - with his fingers crossed and hoping that it was the hard drive and not the cable or the motherboard.

Re: Bah! Damn online gaming... Posted: 23 May 2005 05:53 AM |
I'm not even suprised that I'm writing this.....
The brand new hard drive which turned up friday, first of all couldn't be fitted because 'it had a different power supply socket and I don't have an adapter for it, but I can get you one'. Then when he came back Saturday with said adapter, switching the machine on just resulted in a REALLY annoying beeping 'wee-oo' noise from the box, and the boot up still hanging like it did WITH THE LAST HARD DRIVE!!!!!
Apparently, now he thinks it may be the SATA connector on my motherboard which is broken, instead of the hard drive or the leads (all of which have been replaced).
BAST!
So, to avoid me smashing his little Danish face in, he has taken the pc home to work on until he can tell me what the problem actually is. Or die trying....
If he doesn't fix it soon, I plan on throwing him and it down the stairs and then claiming for a replacement under the accidental damage clause of my household insurance. And burrying his body under my patio.

I STILL don't have my pc working by the way.
Now I hate the Danish as an entire race, Overclockers for being a sh*te online company, and computers in general for always crashing when you least want them to. |

Re: Bah! Damn online gaming... Posted: 13 Jun 2005 11:54 AM |
I finally have my pc back and it finally boots up windows on a working hard drive.
A few final tweaks and drivers tonight, and then my new 250G 16m cache maxtor should be up and running.
Then all I need to do is spend several long hours installing all my games again (well - NWN and WoW at least) and then all the patches and hakpaks etc.
Finally I might get back into the game again then, on a machine that doesn't lag me to hell or otherwise make things unplayable.
Did you guys leave me any storylines to participate in?
I STILL hate the Danish though..... |
