Good, Neutral and Evil.
Posted: 15 Feb 2005 12:37 AM
He walked through Swiftdale, his mind utterly confused, torn apart between his feelings. What was he supposed to feel? What should he do? He whispered it softly, to himself,

'What should I do about her?'

Three voices popped up in his mind and the first took the form of a dove,
'You should continue on and leave her to live with her soon to be married.'
But then the stag stepped forward and whispered,
'Forget about her and move on. Save yourself the pain.'
And then the Worg came forward and growled,
'Kill her fiance and take her as your own.

He sighed, torn apart between the different emotions, but knew the answer.

'Stag, you are right this time.'

Then came the next question and once again he wondered what to do.

'Should I come to her wedding?'

'Yes,' said the dove, 'set aside your pain, anger and sadness and visit her wedding. She needs your blessing there at the altar. She can never be happy without knowing you ended up alright.'
'No,' said he stag, 'stay away and go deep within the forest you now walk through. Enjoy nature, for nature shall not betray you and hurt you.
'Yes' said the Worg, 'Go to her wedding and destroy it. Slaughter the ones who will oppose you from getting her. Force her to marry her and perhaps in time she will find out you are not that bad'

Faldan shook his head at the Worg and the Worg snarled as he felt he was losing power at such a critical moment. Faldan turned and smiled softly at the Stag. 'You are right once more, noble stag.'

Then, he wondered about the next question that came to his mind.

'Should I stay friends with her?'

The dove said, 'Yes, of course you should. She needs you as a friend, even though she does not love you.'
Whilst the stag said, 'Depends. She actually seems to quite enjoy walking after you increasing your pain even more. If she wishes you as a friend, then let her work for it. Let her regain your trust. And until then, perhaps you should remain the fake you to her, the savage.
And the Worg said, 'Ask her to come and speak about it. When she comes, seduce her and sleep with her, finally ending it sliding a dagger past her tender throat.'

Faldan sighed and smiled at the stag, 'Once again I choose you.'

His answers about her were now answered so he asked the last question concerning his life. 'What should I do?'

'Find love', said the dove, 'and live like you did with Eveline and Brigint. They both would have wanted you to find a new woman and be happy again. Perhaps she is not the right one for you and another beautiful woman walks across the earth, searching just like you for her soulmate.'
Whilst the stag said, 'Live on like now, pretending that you cannot read, cannot write, cannot speak Common without an accent. Pretend you are a savage, evil, an Elf-eating barbarian. Make a shield around you heart and live on your own again, for then you shall not feel pain, anger or sadness.'
And the Worg said, softly, 'Grab your axe and go out and inflict others with what you had to experience. Kill those all who oppose you and obtain great power and riches. Then you shall have women crawling at your feet.'

He looked at each of them, hesitant. He then asked,

'What can each of you give me?'

They answered in turns. First the dove,
'Love'
Then the stag, 'Safety'
And finally the Worg, 'Power and wealth.'

Faldan looked at the dove and sighed, 'I have seen my share of love, fair dove. I hope to find a wife again eventually but until then, no. Let them come to me instead and search beyond my first appearance, my barbaric appearance.'

The dove nodded and said, 'Then I shall watch and wait until you are ready to call me, Faldan Stormland of the Woldan' and the dove disappeared.

Faldan then turned to the stag and it rubbed it's soft fur agaainst his chest and said, 'I cannot say if you have chosen right or wrong. But what I can tell you is that safety is a valuable thing. And I will do my very best to grant it to you, Faldan.'

He smiled faintly and together they walked deeper in the forest, ignoring the Worg that was still standing there... but it had not been destroyed.

((well I have seen many stories here but never a true fable. Not entirely surely Im moralistic enough to understand whether Falden picked the right choice but an excellent read. Very thought provoking. Thank you and I hope there is more to come)).

And as he saw Candy, the Worg grabbed it's change and bit strongly in the back of Faldan. It took him over, lured her over and threw her in the water. It was then that the Stag saw what the Worg died and it ran forward, hitting it in it's back.

'You cheat! How dare you touch him when he hates you?'
The Worg growled and looked at the Stag,
'Hate is me and he feels Hate, and therefore also me. You play your cards well, Stag. The woman, Ivy, is a loyal follower of your ways. And what do I have? Nothing!'

The Stag shook his head, 'You cheat in order to be treated fair. Is that your kind of justice.'
The Worg growled and showed it's teeth, 'We will speak again... Stag.'

The Stag quickly looked up at the tree and saw the Dove sitting there. 'Evil has taken the upper hand. Protect Faldan by restoring the Balance.'

And so it did. Soon all was well once more, the Dove giving Faldan the power to hold his breath. And after that, it went wrong even more. As all three Beasts withdrew, Faldan's mind grew to chaos, his mind still unstable. It took the sword and held it against his core, pressing against his skin softly. All three Beasts screamed, knowing also their end was near, and the Worg went to Faldan's legs, the Dove to his arms and finally the Stag to his mind. All three did they put all they could to stop him and eventually, partially by luck, succeeded.

The Worg went to the Darkness, whilst the Dove flew back to it's tree and the Stag walked past Faldan, guiding him. Together they apologized to Sola, together they walked away.

'How must I continue, noble stag?' asked Faldan softly.

The Stag rubbed it's fur softly against him and smiled, 'Trust me, Faldan Stormland, and I will grant you safety. Live like you first did, closed off, but grab the chance to live when the time comes.'

He nodded softly and the Stag knew what was troubling him.

'Do not fear, Faldan. Ivy will forgive you. Your beast of choice is actually quite fitting. You can be a fluffy emotional teddybear but also a fearsome and huge grizzly bear.'

Faldan laughed softly and walked back to the Outskirts...

He strokes sofly through her hair whilst she was still sleeping and he thought about what they both said to eachother yesterday, when the sun set to horizon. He smiled slightly at the thought again and how she yawned with her flawless face whilst her eyes betrayed happiness, love, warmth and joy but also tiredness. He carried her to 'their' home and already did she fell asleep in his arms. He tucked her in, then fell asleep beside her, their hands not letting go.

And now he was awake, whilst Melinne was still asleep. He had sat there for hours, just watching her chest go up and down, taking deep breathes whilst she walked through a, without doubt, beautiful and good dream. When he noticed what time it was, he stood up and went to side by the cliffside, watching the rising sun.

'Stag, is this meant to be?'

The Stag smiled softly and layed down against him, the two like the closest friends.

'Yes, Faldan, it is meant to be. As I told you, live in the moment and forget about past or present and look at what that brought you. Hope and a woman who cares and loves for you.'

Faldan nodded a bit and said, 'And what about Eveline? Would she agree? And is this not what the dove offered? Love?'

The Stag chuckled softly and watched the sunset together with him.

'Faldan, Eveline is proud of you. That you went on. And you know this. You also know that she wouldn't want you to stay in the past and do yourself unnecessary pain. She loved Melinne now as much as she loves you, as Melinne is the one who saved you from your fall to darkness.'

Faldan frowned and looked at the Stag, just as the Dove landed on Faldan's shoulder,

'He speaks the truth, Faldan Stormland. This was all foretold if we did our job well and I assume we did. Think what would have happened if you would have killed yourself just before Candy appeared again. Think about that. What would have happened if you would have followed the Worg.'

Faldan nodded, knowing they were right,

'I know, my friends. I am not afraid of what will come anymore. With Melinne by my side I'll do anything.'

He gave a short glance at his axe, laying beside him in the grass,

'And this axe is now not much more then a tool. I am finally proud to be alive. Proud to live in the great forests of the Mother. Proud to walk the soft sands of the deserts. Proud to sink away in the deep swamps. Proud to see my footsteps in the snow of the North. I have a reason to live. Melinne gave me a reason to live. And I'll keep that reason closer to my heart then anything before in my life.'

The Stag and Dove smiled faintly and softly left, leaving Faldan to his thoughts whilst the sun began to rise...

He needed someone to talk to. And not the usual people. People who didn't know him, people who wouldn't pay attention to his friends, to Melinne, to Sola, to all those things that were close to him. He had to talk to someone. Someone, anyone. Someone...

He sought for someone in Ferein, the land of the Elves. They didn't give much about him, he knew that they hated humans and for good reasons. But their wisdom was unparelled and their love for Nature shown in the oldest stories circulating through the world. He found none, all did they ignore him or send him away until he, desperate as he was, headed in the Sacred Grove. The Druids there were careful at first but eventually one of them took him to a secluded spot and waited for him to begin.

And he began. Every feeling that had troubled him in the past he spoke of. He spoke of the vengeance he sought against the murderers of his wife and child, he spoke of the feelings for Sola and also the feelings for Melinne, he spoke of his current path, he spoke of having lost the sense of a goal in the world, he spoke of the fear that the Mother would not accept him. And the Druid just listened, a small smile playing on her lips. When he stopped, the Druid took a deep breath and said, "You think you are the only one with such feelings. But it is quite the opposite. Everyone has such feelings. Good, Evil, Law, Chaos, it doesn't matter. That is all I say about this matter.'

He nodded, knowing what she meant. He smiled faintly, thanked her in Elvish, a bit stuttering due to him having still a bit trouble with speaking it out. He then stood up, put his axe to rest on his shoulder and headed out of the Grove, out of Ferein, back in the world as he was used to it. And whilst he walked away, the Druids watched him and one said: "A most unusual human I might say." The Druid who spoke with him answered, "And unusual in a good way." They laughed together softly and then they returned to what they were doing.
