LYSSE SELANACAE
Lysse had always considered giving up. She’d been digging for nearly a week now, and her hired diggers were beginning to complain. The sun baked clay resisted their shovels, and they hadn’t found any trace of the small medallion she was looking for.
Allegedly, the medallion had been dropped somewhere in this area by Valia Aikanaro, while she stopped to rest. One of her company had mentioned the resting spot in a journal entry Lysse had deciphered, and had mentioned that Valia was consumed by such important matters, that she could not turn the company around to backtrack to find it. Then record of the Medallion, last sighted somewhere here, in the shade of the yawning cave, completely vanished from any formal records of study in any known library. It was here it had to be found.
Lysse had been eager when she had translated the Aristi dialect, and had discovered the very resting place of the holy paladin of Aros, and her company of heroes. If the medallion was found, surely she’d have acclaim back at the academy… Her talented skills finally attain fruition.
Maybe I could even venture to study at another school, and study its library, cross-referenced with the other schools I’ve been to, I could find things that no one even knows are lost. Archaicitrologers had their rough spots though. She had been sad to find out that few schools even credited scholars like herself proper attribution as solid students of history. The roles Archaicitrologers had in modern society were few, but important nonetheless. Without the recognition of the overlooked artifacts her cause had unearthed, most of the rest of Historical sciences blurred into obscurity.
Her work was still dangerous, though. Without the military training her father had signed her up for, she would stand no chance against the likes of most of the world’s dangers. Even a trip to the fallen Minayren, ancient Elven Capitol of old, would be suicide. She tapped her longswords lightly, pulling them out a few inches and letting them slide back in to make sure they were clear.
Of course, as her old swordmaster had taught her, it was always the brains that won the wars, and being well versed in complex battle tactics had helped her win more spars than the her muscles had.
“Wait stop!... What was that?” She pulled out her shovel, and in the red sun of the desert twilight… she saw the glint of a small bit of bronze chain.
“Over here!” Lysse turned to one of her approaching diggers, and took the comb and brushes from them… and bent carefully to the area she had found the chain. Brushing away at the sand and clay around the object... it was only a few minutes before she pulled the entire clump from the ground, and brought it over to a wire sieve.
“Water… quickly…” She poured the vase of water carefully over the object while two of the diggers shook the sieve back and forth. As the dirt and sand washed off… the green glow of the stone began to shine in the fading light, and Lysse beamed with delight… hugging a nearby digger while making small excited noises.
“It matches the description perfectly… this is it, this is it! We found it!” She jumped up and down, and grabbed a wad of paper, and wrapped the amulet quickly, but carefully, before running around, gathering her things, and deconstructing camp.
“We can still make it back to town before morning if we head out now… C’mon, let’s go!” One of the diggers rolled his eyes, and began packing.
