Logging Posted: 13 Jan 2005 12:49 AM |
Wanting to look back on some old session of Rp? A DM ask you for the log of a certain event? But you dont log and have no way of getting it? Fret no more! Simply open the NWPlayer.ini file in the NWN folder, look under [Game Options] and change ClientChatLogging=0 to ClientChatLogging=1. This will enable logging for your client but who can remember to change it every time you play? This is where the Handy Dandy Gnomish Log Rotator comes in! Simply download this neat little tool here... http://nwvault.ign.com/Files/other/data/1070995050271.shtml Happy logging! |

Re: Logging Posted: 13 Jan 2005 05:19 AM |
NWN 1.64 added one or both of the following options (I can't recall when ServerChatLogging was activated). Both are entered in ..\NWN\nwnplayer.ini under [Game Options]
ClientEntireChatWindowLogging=0|1 Turning this option on (setting it to '1') will cause all text in the in-game chat window to be logged to the log file (regardless of whether or not you have set certain chat messages to be filtered).
ServerChatLogging=0|1 Turning this option on will cause all text in the server side split window to be logged to the log file. Among other things (like combat spam), I now see PC race/class language text translated in the logs. The downside is that racial/class language text appears twice - once in the language's 'gibberish' and once as translated cleartext. You're logs will increase (dramatically) in size and become (slightly) more difficult to just browse through.
If anyone can point me to Bioware-originated information (or some other factually accurate/complete source) on the following nwnplayer.ini [Game Options] option, I'd appreciate it:
LogMyEmoteUsage=0

Ooooh excellent info Aesir! Now I finally get the translations of what I say in another language. It's kind of hard to remember what you said if the conversation is long...
Wooohooo! thanks! |

| The problem with the combat logging is it makes it dang near impoissible to Actually find normal stuff in the logs. |

| For long conversations in another language, I tend to maximise both the chat and server windows and take screenshots at regular intervals. |

I just learned the language... usually Elven.... sure it's metagaming...
*shrugs*
I've been using the languages for well over a year and a half now... cause I played on Bloo's (Hahnshin, creator of the language system) Server for a good 9months or so. |

The problem with the combat logging is it makes it dang near impoissible to Actually find normal stuff in the logs.
Skilled use of Find and Find+Replace functions in a capable text editor is how I work around this. My purposes require racial/class language translation most of the time, so my needs may differ from yours. In any case, each line is prefaced with a new tag, if you've turned these options on, so you'll clearly see what was in a Chat window and what was in a Server window. It is more cumbersome - unless you wish to capture translated text (which I do). Then, frankly, there's no other way to go as far as I'm concerned
There are other approaches however, such as:
1) Using screen captures instead of logging as mentioned elsewhere, but you cannot manipulate the text (copy/paste) from a graphic file (without OCR software).
2) Setting ClientEntireChatWindowLogging=0 (default setting), and hide the combat spam in your NWN chat window options dialog in game. Click the border of the chat windows to see the radial menu options for turning on and off different types of messages. Turn combat messaging off when chatting and on at appropriate points in game to minimize the combat logging.
I've tried scripting a decrypter but found that the translation process is "lossy" for each of the languages as currently implemented. You can encrypt clear-text to the racial language, but cannot decrypt because the translation tables overload more than one cleartext character to a single ciphertext character. In other words, you'll get some gibberish back in your decrypted translation.
In any case, the logging options are there to be used, or not, as desired. |
