Subject: Information on Aristi
Message: [Message Sent to All DMs]

Hey all,

Macha is actively researching any information she can find on Aristi, in particular re: holy places and the particular armor that is worn by Byron Lorian. I, the player, am searching the forums and IG for any information, but if there is anything pertinent that she might "find" (i.e. that I won't necessarily find IG or the forums..she has a lore of 33, btw) could you let me know?

Thank you,

Trish

We could tell her, but then we would have to kill her.

There is some information in the forums. I will search for it. One of importance was a scholarly work done in Midor before the church shut such research down.

topics that she might have some knowledge of
- the 11
- the fall of the aristi
- the fact that there are catacombs rumoured to be beneath Midor

hmm, what else? I will need to dig for it.

Since I am the one (as Byron) that requested this, I'll leave the information provided up to pdawg. But I can be resource for you, pdawg.

I can provide links tho that scholarly work (and Pickston's bastardizaton of it) tomorrow morning (i'm gonna go crash now)

Also, we can use this opprotunity to flesh out Aristi's history in anyway we wish.

I've replied to Macha letting her know that I will pull the information together for her.

Also, I think I will give her a summary of the various things that she would know about, and let her figure out what topics she wants more information on.

FYI:

This was the information given to Macha/Trishy

Tales of Man: The History of the Aristi

There are many tales and legends about the past civilizations of man which has the truth wrapped up in the fanciful with a liberal sprinkling of lies and fables. Most heroes become lost to the ages, while some others gain in fame as the stories are retold from generation to generation.

The story of the Aristi starts with the great civilization of Lynaeum which we can be sure of existed. The tales of Lynaeum are many, but the important part was that it fell.

The fall of Lynaeum led to over a dark age that lasted over a millennium. No human civilization arose during that period, no knowledge was gained, only lost. It was on this background that the story of the Aristi was written.

One man, arose from the wilderness. Some stories say he was a god, some say he was human, some say he was both at the same time. Who knows? What we do know is his name, Marcus Aristi. He with his teachings built a civilization out of the wilderness.

Of course all things come to pass, and so did the life of the founder of the Aristi. With his passing, his power was transferred to those who were to take his place. Up to this point, most of the stories and legends agree.

After this, the story diverges

The first of these paths is derived from the stories of the common people, in Port Royale, Icy Vale, even from some elves of Ferein.

The folklore speaks of a civilization that became great, wise and powerful after a series of trials and tribulations. They speak of a civilization where all decent gods were respected, but none held precedence over the others. They speak of knights of gold, pure of heart and pure of deed from all races, working together. They speak of Priestesses of both compassion and wisdom acting as a guiding hand over the warriors of that noble culture. They speak of the rulers from their twin thrones dispensing justice and succour that all that needed it. Some of the creation myths tell of the gathering of symbols from Lynaeum to act as a reminder of what the new civilization should be and what not to be.

There are stories that talk of differences between the Prince and the Priestess - fables showing used to show children how to reconcile differences amongst others. In some of these stories, the Prince is the power, in others, the Priestess. The stories are many and conflicting. The most interesting stories talk of a civilization at the peak of it's power, tumbled by pride.

In most of these stories, the name Aristi is seldom mentioned, only the structure of the stories allows you to relate them together - the common threads tying them together.

Some of the stories talk of the scattering of the nobles to the far corners of the land until the day when they could rejoin each other and rebuild what was there - a typical fairy tale to be sure.

To your specific queries regarding places of worship, the Mother always seems to command the most respect, but she is not central to the themes of the stories. All the gods make an appearance in the stores, usually with happy endings. Evil gods plans are foiled, the good and perhaps less disinterested gods bestow their blessings on the heroes in the stories.

The armour? No mention at all beyond golden warriors. To your experienced eye, you can recognize the work of being of Aristi styling.

The second path is the most clear. The record keepers of Midor are most exacting with dates, times and details of all that has happened since the plague. In the times pervious to this, their records get a little less exacting, but are still clearer than the mishmash of folklore stories.

The midoran records of most interest to you are of the time before the plague. Here the scholarly work becomes less so and more scathing in its condemnation of what the Aristi had become. The texts describe a noble civilization, corrupted by evil upon the death of their noble founder (name Aristi, no first name was mentioned). The practice of human sacrifice to that ghastly demon Menarok was not uncommon. The leaders both depraved and vile, the people oppressed.

The cause of the plague is unknown, but possibilities discussed. The most likely consensus was a war between Menarok, who held great sway over the city and Gukathul who wanted the dead for his minions. Whatever the reason, the plague first struck the most desired people - the leaders, the most depraved and evil individuals who would have been most high in Gukathuls wish list. From there the plague spread down the ranks affecting all who deserved it until finally it reached those who were evil in deeds, although not necessarily of heart. Another possibility discussed a cable of eleven dark warriors who sought to usurp control from the others and created the magical plague themselves.

Finally, as the plague was about to strike those who were good of deed, the Saviours of Aristi arrived, complete with the blessings of Midoran and tasked to save those who were left and who were worthy of salvation.

The Teachings of Midoran are replete with examples, parables and homilies of the Aristi and how they sowed the seeds of their destruction through their evil, greed, selfishness, and vices. The stories also warn of the array of dark forces constantly besieging the walls of Midor (figuratively speaking, of course) and how the forces of darkness seek to restore what was one theirs. Warnings abound of Paladins succumbing to the old lies and falling from the path into darkness. More warnings on believing the lies of the dark ones seeking to make grand what was horrific.

Regarding your specific inquiries, There are no mentions of the arms or armour of the Aristi in the midoran texts.

Regarding the places of worship, it is not clear. The midoran texts speak of places of horror and worship of dark gods being burned to the ground and being buried over. One historian wryly noted that their desire to destroy these places overrode the historians desire to study, and document these places for future reference. A loss for history.

What is interesting is that you find more folklore of Lynaeum than you do of Aristi. One would have though that the later civilization would have more information available to it than an earlier one. Tales must grow in the telling.

Trishy has gone bye bye, it seems, at least for a time. Pdawg, we can edit this and provide it to Bennigan, right? I'd remove the mention of the texts found in MIdor, Bennigan has not researched there.

Bennigan has a much lower lore skill.

I'll need to check it and decide what is appropriate to give him.

Really, I would like him to see both sides of it - if it is too one sided, then the player will not see the conflict in the different sides to the story.

:-\ I need to think on how to get him interested in Midor then.

Has he IG looked for information?

For the public forums? Nothing incriminating here.

Some early Aristi research by the players.

One of the world changing story-lines we never got to finish due to loss of the players who would have carried it forward.
