Item guidelines
Posted: 26 Nov 2004 04:21 AM
As this basket of snakes has been rearing its head again recently, these are the guidelines the DM team currently works with. As always a certain amount of DM discretion applies, and in rare instances these rules may be broken. It's always a good guideline not to worry about what other people have, because it just ruins playing enjoyment for yourself and others:

+3 and lower can be found without being all that rare.
+4 should be very rare.
+5 should not exist, with very few rare exceptions (rings that grant +5 to one save, robes of the archmage but these may only be worn by a high lvl mage - no UMD or low level mage multiclasses, +5 weapons versus one particular race/alignment, etc.)

No perm true sight.
No perm haste.
No perm improved evasion / immune to death magic / immune to criticals / immune to sneak attack / immune to knockdown.
No multiple raise dead items (ie rod of ressurection), and one shot scrolls and othersuch items should be very rare
No resistance to weapon damage of greater than 10, i.e piercing, slashing and blunt.
No resistance to other damage of greater than 15, with rare exceptions.
No single item that grants more than +10 to any skill.

Very rare to find items that grant extra feats, the best legal one I know is gloves of the balanced hand (ambi and 2 wpn fight) and should be exceptionally rare.

Holy avengers illegal unless given to a paladin by a DM. May definitely never be utilised through UMD.

Also note that many of the items in Vives are custom made for this world. Some are aimed at certain races, alignments or classes, and will specifically say in the item description that they cannot be UMD'd. Please make sure you read all item descriptions before using UMD to utilise something you otherwise could not use.

I think a simple set of guidelines like this saves on probs. Let me know if Ive missed anything, this is based from a lot of threads in the dm channel about this over the last few months. Other instances will arise, but generally the above covers 99% of items, and anything else can be dealt with on a case by case basis.

DM's are not obliged to replace items. Asking for something in particular as a replacement is almost certainly a sure way not to get it, unless asked for input by the DM. But generally if the item was found somewhere a good item should be, then we will probably be nice. Maybe. *grins*

Cheers,

Sirac

- Red Tiger Double Axe (dodge feat given)
- Broewende Family Armour

((If you find something you believe to be illegal, or are unsure about, please post on the main boards about it, or PM All DMs. Any other exceptions allowed/disallowed will be added here)).

This is just a *bump* to remind people of the item guidelines. And to say, please if you find something illegal can you either throw it in a trashcan, or send a PM to all DMs. We have put a considerable amount of effort into improving the treasure tables of late, so they work properly, and there are a few Vives specific items. But in return would like to see a lessening of ooc problems with looting, items will now be a little more available, and hopefully less illegal items being found.

Letting DMs know via a PM is especially important for items like rod of resurrections. In no way having a go at the player I found with one this morning, just asking that you do let us know and dont use them from now please.

Since I have been back, and over the last two months when I just used to watch the website, I could name a handful of characters that are spending a lot of their time going to the same places over and over again in order to try and find loot. Rushing off after every reset with that singular goal. And without the faintest trace of rp attached to their actions. This has two effects, it encourages other players to do the same. And it spoils the chances of other players who have less ooc knowledge of the world finding the ocassional good item. As such I have to say a little ooc consideration would be very welcome. And if necessary, I for one will spice up areas, especially lower level areas, with things to challenge and quite possibly kill epic level characters doing this. Concentrate on rp or crafting, go to one or two places a reset and stick to areas appropriate to your level, and it will not be an issue. Team up with people, and rp, and it will not be an issue. But run around at your fastest possible speed, solo, maybe even with GS or the like cast, trying to get every item possible every reset, and you are really not playing Vives for what it is meant to be. And no, just because you kill everything that gets in your way does not make it ok either. We have a great community, but it is easy to forget how actions like these are not very...community minded. So just a gentle reminder, please read all the above with a huge smiley face! *grins*

Cheers,

Sirac

Just a *bump* as the team, especially Fictrix and True Darkness, have added a host of custom items to the treasure tables. Some great stuff to be found out there, have fun trying to get it away from its current owners!!

I have updated the original post in this thread. Please be sure to read the bit in bold, regarding the use of UMD. Dont worry, umd will still be allowed to use on many items. But some are so specifically suited to a certain race / alignment / class / whatever that it really is not appropriate to UMD them. So please just read the item description before using UMD.

I would imagine the base penalty for using UMD on an item that specifically says you cannot do so would be loss of the item at the very least. However it is quite possible that by doing this you will actually start a chain reaction that will result in tearing a rift in the space / time continuum and thus destroy existence as we know it.

*nods*

Sirac

*bump*

I've heard a number of questions regarding item legality that would have been answered by the first post this thread.

Just a reminder that the essential inforums are there for that purpose.
