DM's:Halloween Posted: 16 Sep 2004 07:47 AM |
Hi folks,
Oct 31st falls on a sunday this year. I remember when playing UO that they used to do very fun Halloween specials...with an entirely different, highly lethal world that everyone played new chars on and if you could survive 15 mins you'd done well.
Thats a bit extreme for a Vives perspective, but thought it might be fun if we did a variant ourselves. Including any atmospheric changes to the landscape, if easy to build and remove after. A plethora of undead roaming the land. Possess players and have them act in unusual manners. I was even thinking of dopplegangers...where we create identical characters to well known existing people and cause chaos. Maybe a relaxing of the PvP rules as bloodlust sweeps the land - though that last would still need rules like can only initate combat with people higher lvl than you. And less sure about that than the other ideas.
Anyway, -if- this is something people like the concept of...post your ideas here. And maybe we can even build in a storyline leading up to it. Would definitely be a Gukathul type of event, so Dens if you are going to be around...thoughts? And we would need DM's around as much as possible, so who could help?
If not appealing then no worries...but thought its worth suggesting at least.
Cheers,
Sirac |

I should be around to help-
But I'd rather the "Halloween special" took the form of a much, much darker normal quest than anything with an OOC influence to it.
We could, for example, sow some IC seeds for the death of Aros, or somesuch. Well, not that, but you get the idea. ;)

Re: Halloween Posted: 16 Sep 2004 08:36 AM |
Yea the full extent of the ooc influence is the fact that it is Halloween IRL. And that would effect the atmosphere of what we are trying to create for the day. Not suggesting an ooc event, but more that IG something happens that turns Vives into a place of nightmares for the length of that one RL day. A blood moon rises, Nethar'u opens, Gukathul goes on vacation and the dead rise...something along those lines, but definitely a one off event.
*grins evilly*
Something like that.
Cheers,

It would be cool if we could make it midnight IG throughout the RL day
And use the DM FX wands to make it foggy everywhere

Re: Halloween Posted: 17 Sep 2004 04:45 PM |
Some Carfax / Carfax Mansion incursion perhaps? Where the undead beasties there get a bit of a power boost for the day and start overflowing into the neighboring lands?
I think that place's history is muddled and obscure enough (even to us) that we could make it a one-time event/story that won't affect pre-existing/current/planned stories.
Random Images to jump off from: *NPCs in Buckshire Trading Post go A.W.O.L in hiding.
*Uwe is found cowering in the locked room behind the dart board or that other locked room at the Four Winds Inn main floor.
*The ageless NPC (can't recall her name right now) across the hall from Log the Dwarf Drunkard tells a tale of dark history/woe that might explain the Carfax uprising of Undead. *
*Log, rude drunken sod that he, closes shop for the day and makes an appearance as a retired warrior, hammer swinging, etc.
*Cocktails and fine dining, post-quest, hosted by (of course) Fat Stan of the Carfax Inn.
"It's not so much an afterlife,'' said Arthur, ``more a sort of apres vie.'" -Douglas Adams, The Restaurant at the End of the Universe
Let's place our order with ACME Undead for a truckload of extra skeletons, wraiths, and what not to account for the 'holiday rush'. :)
Similar idea could be implemented at Death's Head /Kobai Crypts but those areas are tough for the low and mid-level PCs out there, so ... perhaps not the best choice. It's easier to add challenge to a low lev area (Carfax) than it is to remove it from a high level area like Death's Head. |

Cool ideas Aesir, could be fun. Ref the above, maybe if we have a few dm's on we can split people up for some parts...so that people are confronted by challenges appropriate to their level rather than the high lvl chars doing everything while the rest look on?
So run events in every undead based area throughout the land. Maybe a goal that has to be achieved simultaneously in different places so people have to split up and get organised into groups?
Something like that anyway...

Re: Halloween Posted: 29 Oct 2004 05:55 AM |
Ok, 2 days to go, and an event notified on the forums. So what are we going to be doing!? *grins*
Sol and I can put in a few hours DM'ing sometime on Sunday.
Is it possible to get the red mist effect sorted on Elbereth's tears today / tomorrow at the latest?
Is there any way to make it so it is perpetually night on Sunday? Other than just using the dm wand to change time of day?
We will scatter random packs of undead across the land. Nothing too tough in common areas. Was thinking we could do a post ready for Sunday morning with atmospheric descriptions of what is going on across the lands...crazed animals attacking at random, townsfolk all gone into hiding (except Midor and Ferein), etc, etc.
Limbo all the random townsfolk and replace with non-hostile undead "shopkeepers" we can make invulnerable and use to rp with PC's. Dead relatives of current shopkeepers risen from the grave etc.
Set hostile deer and birds and the like all over. Use stink cloud and darkness generators in some places...and placeable's like bones and bloodstains. Use lots of sound fcts. Basically anything we can think of to make Vives different and "spooky" for the day.
If Sol and I start this off on Sunday morning GMT and do some bits and pieces of rp. And then the main tears plot gets started afternoon our time...as we're not so sure what is going on with that? Maybe we could even play some of it...shock, horror! *grins*
And it continues into the US evening maybe if anyone around to DM some of it then?
Anyway, any more ideas....and Den's we need to know what needs to be done to recover the tears and where they are.
All I know is one is with Guk, one is with a vampire you will probably run?, PC's are talking about another with some honorable man they can only tell "holy people" the name of?. Basically not really sure what the main quest is going to involve...so let us know if youre happy to run that whole story sometime on Sunday or if you need some help with bits of it?
Thoughts on any of the above...especially who will be around to help, and can Sol and I play some of it in the afternoon / evening if we want to?
Cheers,
Sean |

Re: Halloween Posted: 29 Oct 2004 06:26 AM |
Just to make clear, a lot of the above I meant Sol and I can do after a forced reset Sunday morning. No need to go to a whole lot of effort making permanent changes that have to be undone after...
Just means after 8 hrs will need to be redone by someone... *shrugs* ...sixteen hours worth of those effects IG should be enough.
Cheers,

Re: Halloween Posted: 29 Oct 2004 06:40 AM |
as far as I know, permanent night can only be done in the toolset.
changing npc's into zombies and still having the stores work needs to be done in the toolset.
other effects (roaming zombies and skeletons, fog) can be done by IG by a DM with sufficient time on their hands.
Any changes to the mod can be rolled back to the non halloween version anytime, so there is no biggie making changes to the mod.

Re: Halloween Posted: 29 Oct 2004 07:15 AM |
If its easy for you to do all the better. Especially the permanent night. I expected more that the store's would be closed down...with a zombie shuffling around. And maybe when a DM was about interacting with PC's. But any easy changes you guys can make and then revert away from would be extremely cool. The only one that needs doing before Halloween itself is Elbereth's tears so that people get the feeling something major is on its way without a whole lot of DM effort.
Cheers,

Re: Halloween Posted: 29 Oct 2004 08:17 AM |
ok a few things -
I will have a lot less free time than I thought this weekend =/
I study on sunday - the latest hour I can stay up to is about (max!) midnight (GMT +2)
so 'my' gods will only be able to be around when i'm around (for some odd reason =o)
I 'took Guk away' by making Aros chase him for the stones.. none of them will be around for the event.
The stones - one is with Guk (wont be able to be returned) one is with the vampires (Gasher will be dealing with this) The honorable man is Luther that guards Gorlath (which will get a stone as well) and the one that only holy men might know his name is Kahmut, a mummy - an ancient follower of Guk, played him some months ago. - he will be at the crypts under the desert (i.e will be a buffed up mummy lord) - a note, Aros told Elvalia (again) that elves are not allowed inside tombs.. their protection is even weaker now (when Guk has a stone) so Aros and Elbereth will not be able to prevent them from being raised as undead.
I think one stone (Gorlath probably) should be given -before- halloween itself, and the rest (the more halloweenish IMO) will be on halloween itself.
if you can write down when you will be able to be around.. so we could make a scheduel - it would probably be the best option (so I will see when I play, work or study to one of the three exams i'll have o_O)

Re: Halloween Posted: 29 Oct 2004 08:41 AM |
Sol and I can be around as DM's anytime from about 11ish am through into the evening...all GMT times. That said we would rather only DM a few hours max, and might like to play some of the event.
Is just getting the tears going to be enough, or do they need to purify them as well to stop the Halloween style chaos across the land?
Anyway, let us know exactly what you want us to do and we'll help as best we can. But if Gasher is dealing with the vampire one, Guk is keeping his, and you play Kahmut it only really leaves Luther and Gorlath for anyone else to DM. If instead you want that sorted by us on Halloween happy to liase with pd and run something round that.
If sorted beforehand then we will just stick to the atmospheric b/grd stuff...which we're totally happy to do anyway.
Cheers,
Sirac |

Re: Halloween Posted: 29 Oct 2004 09:16 AM |
My availability... periodically throughout the day and evening. I've company over (Mother-In-Law.. .and no jokes about the appropriateness of this over Halloween weekend), but that just means I'll have to break away to socialize a bit more often.
Is just getting the tears going to be enough, or do they need to purify them as well to stop the Halloween style chaos across the land?
Suggestion: Keep the event short enough to ensure that the story completes before the end of prime time for N.A. (9 or 10 pm-ish GMT -5).
If sorted beforehand then we will just stick to the atmospheric b/grd stuff...which we're totally happy to do anyway.
Atmosphrere/mood is what I want to bring to the event. Little things like adding glow auras around zombies to keep the PCs guessing as to whether or not they've run into just another zombie. |

The tears was always meant to be the excuse for the Halloween madness...like you said in your other thread we dont want too many storylines running all at once.
Let us know if you want us to run anything specific, or just stick to atmosphere.
