Travel, Travel, Travel Posted: 20 Aug 2004 07:08 AM |
Ok, I know there has been a lot to do lately and I think we all appreciate the work done and I know there has been lots of talk about the travel system with people opposing and supporting it as it is. But let me just describe something which were I newbie I would consider looking elsewhere just for the transport system alone.
My new character Ravik, makes it to Ferein from Port Royal by boat. He wonders about for a bit then makes it to Gladden Hills. Sees how dangerous it is and runs away. Realises he must go back via the boat. Gets to the shore at 6am and discovers there arent any.
That means I have to wait 1RL hour before I can go anywhere. So I have two choices wait and be bored, or try G.Hills (which me being me I do). With Expeditious Retreat (which doesnt work properly) I make it 2/3rd of the way and die!
What makes it worse is not only the XP loss and GP loss for Respawning but rather than be taken to Midor, which would have at least been something I'm taken back to Ferein, only to be stuck with the same dillemma.
There is absolutely no way out of this problem, except to alter in some way the transport. As I said there are lots of things being done and I personally really really appreciate all the work so far, Vives is 1000% better than old, but for all the other arguments (such as realism vs gaming enjoyment) and this problem alone can the Transport system please be amended asap with particular emphasis on allowing newbie players to explore as much as possible.
Thanks guys |

| I know.. we can remove water routes to Ferein.... That way.. newbies won't even be able to get there... and they'll never get stuck there again *grins* |

This is actually a good idea. Ferein is not in a location designed for low level PCs. That's just life. It's a bastion of safety in a very dangerous part of the world.

I have to say that would imho really disrupt Vives.
There are a lot of Elven characters in Vives and it would seem almost more than human. If the only way to Ferein would be through Gladden Hills it would mean elves could not visit their homeland without escort until around about 10th level. That makes absolutely no sense to me and is certainly counterproductive to Roleplaying.
What makes more sense, is, as Evar recommended to the elven council, the boats that run from Port Royal become more frequent (i.e. every day).
Also, simply from a newbie perspective, there is not a great deal of places that you can visit as a new character as it is. Ferein in my mind need to be given greater content (by way of things to do) and greater access for newbies, as like you suggest, it is a safe place. Put simply, Ferein is a perfect place for low level characters and newbies. Cutting off its access or keeping it restrictive seems about the most aburd thing you can do.
Also, you will then exacerbate the problem. Picture this, you start in Four Winds, adventure around Port, Buckshire etc. Get to about 2 - 3rd level. Nothing left for you to do (as your not strong enough for anything else). You head to Midor. There you check out Midor, Paws the Great plains and Lake Ladriel. Again, not alot there for you to do.
You cant really advance as there are fewer places to explore (as you cant now go to Ferein). Your only hope is to meet someone. If you cant? You get bored and probably leave.

I was thinking that it would be good of you started in your home of choise as in people from Port start in Port and the same for Ferein, Midor and Brandybuck.
If there going to leave home and start there adventures then dont they have to leave home and work out the world from there
I think it would be good and as for this post I think it would be terrible to take away the boat to ferein. if you get killed in Gladden and respawn you get taken there, so now the new person in well and truly stuck in Ferein

orr.. you party up with someone who can escort you threw the troll country. Or you party up with someone who can't and RP till the boat arrives? It's not like there are highways everywhere so everyone could go to anyplace at anytime..

Partying up might be the ethos of Vives and is all well and good, but it still doesnt solve the problem, simply for the fact its not always possible.
So effectively if a newbie says "I couldnt really do a lot because I cannot go to many places and there was no one around" and you say "party up", I would be surprised if they didnt look a little confused and perturbed. |

As of now a version/test/whatever of things we can do with travel is in game.......... look for new people etc. in and around the Northern Highway area.
I've managed to do something which basically replicates the old Baldurs Gate system, whereby in our case. if you're getting on a boat, riding a horse, getting a stagecoach over a longish distance, then you stand a percentage chance of being ambushed and other such things (getting shipwrecked, being separated from the rest of the travellers by a heavy storm or somesuch for example).
If you don't encounter anything, then it's basically a straight jump to the location. I have added in such an example in game as mentioned. No waiting around for days to get a boat or whatever, just a very small and easy (non-fighting related) Quest beforehand.
Let us know what you think, both good and bad :)
Cheers

The encounter I had seemed a very good idea. Certainly something which combines that realism with enjoyablity in a positive way. Look forward to seeing how this pans out.

I'm really looking foreward to the new travel system. It adds some unpradictability. Sounds great!
