A Note Across Southern Vives Posted: 29 Jul 2004 06:31 AM |
~Posted at the locations below is a note in scripted writing~
Icy Vale Inn, The gate leading from Gladden Farmlands onto the Hills, Latonei Forest, Mystic Woods.
A Friendly Warning
Travellers be warned, these parts have become unusually dangerous as of late. The trolls on the hills have taken to forming squads, sometimes lead by their Chieftain, raiding nearby areas in the Farmlands, and the Vale. They have also grown in power and have acquired healing as well as regenerative abilities, and greater protection against some weapons.
The Mystic Wood also has seen some strange and unusual activity.
Please be careful, travel accompanied if you can.

The acrid, smokey smell of burning green wood wafts over to the old ranger. Strand closes the book he's reading - a historical account of the passage of a company of Midor guardsmen, and their families, seeking to settle what were once wildlands northwest of the city of Midor.
Marking his place, he closes the cover of the book, sets it down on the sidetable, and wanders back towards the workshop in the Oakhouse to make certain Ronan doesn't set himself - or the Oakhouse - on fire.
"Only you can prevent forest fires," he cautions, only half-jokingly, from the doorway to the workshop.
Without looking up from his work, Ronan grunts some rebuttal or other and gestures towards the bucket of water placed next to him.
Stepping forward, Strand watches the man for a few moments as he carefully burns some symbol or other into a series of carven wood chips laid out in a row across the workbench.
"You think you're a mage now, then? Those supposed to be some magic wards?"
A brief hiss and a tendril of steam rise up into the air as a Ronan dips a chip into the bucket, then places it flat upon the workbench to dry.
Strand, jaw set with some annoyance at being ignored, continues, "Don't you have work to do today?"
"I suppose that's what they are, Strand," he replies to the earlier question, "They're wards."
"I think you've gone soft in the head, Ronan," he says with some puzzled amusement replacing his annoyance - but takes a cautious step closer to look upon the workbench despite himself.
Looking at several of the wood chips, a clear and bold "R" set within a circle burned on each, he questions Ronan silently with a look that turns slowly into a gaze of concern.
A long pause passes between the two veterans before Strand continued.
"I heard a story once, about a band of mercenary types that called themselves "The Hammer". Assassins and men-at-arms really, hiring out to the highest bidder to handle some lord's dispute or other. Gained quite a reputation over the years, they did."
Pausing thoughtfully, Strand continues, "I think in that line of work, you'd have to advertise to be successful. And they did - and they were. You see, after they were done slaughtering whomever it was they were paid to kill, they'd lay a few carpenter's hammers around the bodies. To let everyone know who was responsible," he says with eyes locked on Ronan's face.
Unwavering, Ronan returns the gaze impassively.
After a moment, "You're right, Strand. I've work to do today," he says as he gathers up several of the wood chips bearing his mark. "I'll be in the Gladden foothills, and I'll be back tomorrow morning."
"Be wary of the trolls. They're getting bolder," Strand calls out to Ronan's back as the ranger leaves the workshop.
Strand, looking up, notices Shinesa's presence for the first time, and the look of concern on her face. He says to her, "It's going to eat him up."
Shinesa's concern turns to outright worry, "The trolls?"
Strand, shaking his head slowly, "No, not them." On his way out the workshop, he stops and turns back to Shinesa and says, "The hatred." |
