Vives: The future Posted: 24 Jul 2004 03:17 PM |
Hi folks :D
First of all, I would like to sincerely apologise for any confusion over the past few days. This posts intent is to clarify what has happened and what will :)
First of all what happened:
You will have seen posts relating to leavings etc. already plus a number of "resignations". The major contributing factor to all of this is/was a breakdown in communication between the admins here at Vives. Little or no communication was happening in a variety of directions, no-one in particular to blame, but something had to change.
Now for right or wrong, I was the one who took a decision and suspended/banned an admin, I hold full responsibility for this. The main reasons were for mis-communication, but more importantly for disparaging remarks and abusive comments about me in particular and also Vives. Quite simply I had had enough. I may well have acted rashly in this, and this was -solely- my decision, which then caused further friction.
After this, there were a host of PM's flying backward and forth, and DM's decided to leave the mod for a number of reasons:
People building and creating for Vives felt they had little or no support from myself, and my actions deepened those feelings. With the DM's and admins it has been almost 100% an amicable "split", I guess one would call it "Creative differences".
One of the break-downs in miscommunication was regarding the Server itself, or "George" as he is fondly known. Quietus has done a simply awesome job in first, integrating us with his own persistency system, working on the website, and doing a shedload of back-end coding. However he and hiswife have recently given birth to a young girl and as such, he simply does now not have the time to maintain it. This I and al other admins were aware of, and I cannot express my gratitude to Q for his work.
However, whilst I personally was aware we needed to look for a new home for Vives, I was not told or consulted when a decision was made. I was only told in retorospect after I had come up with another possible solution. Hence a serious breakdown in communication (needless to say -not- with Quietus).
This is still happening.
We are moving home, but the -GREAT- news is that this will be on a faster machine with a far quicker connection (between 5 and 10 times faster than at present), which will mean a reduction in lag.
The transition will be seamless, as soon as we have it set up, and players et al will notice no difference, not suffer any interruptions to play/website etc at all bar a different ip :D The server will be hosted by myself and Lisen in Canada (for those who do not know I am relocating there to live with the simply gorgeous lady :P).
I will re-iterate that no information will be lost, no players characters nor web posts, and there will be virtually no down-time for Vives.
So...... what happens next?
Whilst we are sorry to lose people from this World, we now feel in a stronger position as regards the administration and the way forward for the module.
the new admins are:
Myself Lisen Sirac Solitaire Lytton Phoenix_Flamehart (welcome back! :D) and Gorak whenever he returns from whereever the hell he is (as yet not been able to contact him).
We will all be continuing as DM's, and will be looking for new ones shortly I am delighted in that EVERY one of us admins are great "friends", we are 100% behind each other, hold similar visions and teamwork will surpass what has gone before. This is imho simply the best thing for Vives :D
I have been simply awestruck (as have we all) at the level of support, and from thosewho have leant this you have our fondest thanks, I would also like to say a special thankyou to a number of those who have left and PM'd kind messages to me/us on the site, again it was much appreciated.
Overall, Vives as a World will continue in a familiar path, Foremost in our minda will be one thing:
FUN!
We also will continue to strive to be the best roleplay server out there Contrary to other things you might have heard, we are -NOT- going full HCR.
Long post, so I shall end it here for now, but more information will follow shortly :)
Many thanks

Well, I have to say, first, you have a great deal of support from your player base and I know that I and many others are behind you and do not doubt you will keep Vives a great place to play.
Secondly, the change in direction and the unity of the team Im sure will only make Vives even better and I have to say I am certainly looking forward to the months ahead. Im also glad to hear that Phoenix_F is back as I did tell her (not knowing the fair lady was in fact a lady) that Vives would be worse off without her and I hoped she would return.
Finally, what on earth HCR? |

HCR = Hard core rules...aka drink water or die, go to the toilet or your bladder explodes, etc, etc.
((k, I might have made that last one up))
All I would add to Ara's post is that he has acted with absolute integrity and remained as pleasant as he could in the face of some very unpleasant hostility at times.
And to agree...I really do think the team will work as a team now. I am devastated at some of the amazing dm's to leave, and hope some will return in time...but we will do all we can to keep Vives as great as always.
Cheers,
Sean |

I would like to thank Sirac for his kind words, but also re-iterate something he quite rightly mentions :)
I too, am extremely sad to see many extremely talented DM's leave, but many will, of course be welcome back without question, if they choose to return. We will though be adding new talent as well to help Vives progress :)
Cheers

*bows quietly*
Yep, I have returned. Those who have been around for a while know the circumstances in which I left, and well, that's water under the bridge. There are probably those who think I'm taking advantage of the flux of DM's leaving, but well, I'm not I wouldn't have even considered returning had people not wanted me to, and judging from discussions and PM's, that was quite a few people Sides, life threw me a few nasty curveballs after I left anyway, so I wouldn't have stayed much longer any how :P
Anyway, enough on that. I won't be taking a 'major' role in Vives. Afraid that real life, work commitments, up and coming teaching course and general exhaustion will see to that You'll probably only catch me around Friday or Saturday nights for a few one-off quests and general chatting. So be prepared to see a few familiar faces a-lurking around...

Hi gene!
Sorry for the confusion, I know it's not the most idealistic situation for all :/
To answer some of your queries.......
Quietus has a new baby Girl :D So he's been away for the mod for a while, BUT has been simply awesome in maintaing the server for us! He's also helping us in our new move to a new, faster server (which should see a massive drop in any lag). In fact Q has been simply awesome throughtout -all- the difficulties Vives has undergone. Qute simply without Q there would be no Vives, the man's a genius! (Frobozz anyone? :P)
Alosynth & Narenia have left to do their "own thing" with some of the other Dm's you might have seen leave. Whilst I have had "-MY- differences with one, the other will be severely missed". Narenia has been extremely co-operative in helping us in her absence I am glad to say :D
Neek moved onto "different things" about 3 months ago, his real love is RTS and is "actively pursuing" his quest to "dominate the Universe" I believe I have his e-mail so if anyone wants this then please PM me :)
Walin also has family commitments, but I hope he shall return when he finds the time :D
As regards the whole situation.......
Quite simply, I have made my feelings plain in the first parts of this post. Yes, People -will- be missed, from a personal point of view these would include Coruva (a true gent), Mykal (also) and Narenia.
What I am most excited about is the fact that finally! We, as admins and DM's are 100% behind each other, are "dumping" the red-tape and certain "other aspects" we all hated about the previous system and getting back to having FUN!
Things might not be perfect, but all I can say is we're -REALLY- trying :)
cheers :D

Re: Vives: The future Posted: 26 Jul 2004 08:08 PM |
thank you very much for the informative post, Arathon. you are right, they were all great players and dms/admin., but everyone is free to come and go when they wish.
I would like to ask a few more questoins, perhaps a PM would be better, but one or two on the forums cant hurt.
1. many of my characters are elves and i would like to know who will be in charge of the elves now that Narenia is gone?
2. i dont know if you took it out, but will you please put enchanting weapons/armor back into vives?
3. i am not taking sides with any of the dms or admin. but i do want to say thanks for your hard work and holding this thing together. so many hours have been invested i cannot simply walk away and keeping this world intact must be very difficult. I hate to see the ones go who have left, for they were good friends and we had good times, but all things must pass and the ones who are staying and being promoted will do a great job! |

Enchanting Weapons/armour must have been taken out without my knowledge.......... as soon as I can, I will add it back in.
Elves -will- be picked up by new/existing DM's as soon as they possibly can be :)
and Yes! One thing we -are- in 100% behind each other! This can only help each other :D
cheers

Folks!
It's been a torrid time here at Vives :/
We're sorry to lose valuable Dm's and players......... however we're working to resolve this, and there has been some simply -AWESOME- Quests run by people such as Sirac and Solitaire as of late, they seem to be setting an alltogether "new standard".
Although we are going "through transitions" it's been a delight to see so many "old faces" and simply awesome roleplayers (through the grapevine I hear there is -many- more yet) , "coming back" to Vives You'll also notice some new, and -VERY- talented roleplayers coming to Vives within the coming Weeks, so I hope folks will welcome them with "open arms" into our community, they really are very special people :)
We here are all working exceptionally hard to minimise the loss of DM's, but fact remains, we (for perhaps the first time, certainly for at least a 6 months or more) are 100% behind each other!
I would apologise for the "overly-sentimental" tone of this post, and I perhaps would have in the past, but for the first time, in a long time, I and indeed -WE- are excited once more! :)
Bring back the fun eh?
cheers

Re: Vives: The future Posted: 29 Jul 2004 04:11 AM |
I just want to add something to this if I may Ara, from a PC's point of view.
I came to Vives looking for something specific, but realised that chances of me getting exactly what I wanted would be quite rare.
I was looking for excellent roleplayers to RP with, stories that made me think and RP through (most likely making it harder to solve the story) and DMs who would allow me to flesh my character out and allow him to interact with the social-structure of the world and not merely its inaninmate objects or it limited NPCs.
Over the past seven months I've been here, there have been occassions when in one way or another I have been able to do each of these but seldom more than one at a time and never with any great intensity.
Nearly every day since this transition began I have had every aspect of what I have been looking and moreover, I have had things I didnt expect. The experience has been intense and amazing and from where Im standing, its accreditable to people who genuinly want to have fun and create a good game.
I am very grateful to all the DMs, both those that have been involved with me in the last few days and those behind the scenes that have helped that along. I have to confess I was considering moving on myself or taking a break, but you have no chance!!! So for those of you that are sad to hear such news, blame the "transition" and all the great stuff its brought to Vives.
PS. I even enjoy soloing now because I have something to talk to Tiggy about!!! |

Re: Vives: The future Posted: 29 Jul 2004 06:19 PM |
And this is from someone who hasn't played here in a couple of months (I believe May was the last time logged on?) and who isn't playing for a long while either (bit of a NWN burn out here :P):
What doesn't kill you makes you stronger.
What happened a few days ago was like a shock to me and a lot of good people have left, people with whom I had excellent roleplaying sessions, both as players or DMs.
But Vives hasn't died, far from it even. From what I've read and heard it's very much alive and I'm happy about that. Vives was the first NWN server where I truly enjoyed myself in all aspects of the game.
I do not know if I'll ever start playing NWN again (not for a moment at least), but if I do then Vives will be the first place for me to come back to. I wish everyone, be they admins, DMs or players an extremely good time on Vives. Remember to have fun all!
Oh yes and congrats to all the new DMs. I've known you since you started playing here and I'm 100% positive that you'll do one hell of a job!
Cheers all! |

Hi, there and long time no see Arathon. First off I want to say Vives was probly the best nwn server I've played for rping the people and admins for the most part where great I also believe its been probly about a year since I've played I still haunt the forums and such. Good to see for the most part things are still alive and well I've actually considerd rejoining and maybe bring a few friend's with me. Regardless Vives has been along longer then some Pw's and I'm sure it will continue to be. Although I must admit I hardly recongize any of the names on the forums!

Hi folks :)
Just wanted to say a quick thanks for the support on behalf of the new Vives team :)
For the first time in a long time, we are a happy bunch and already it's paying dividends in the progress we are making. Much of this at present is "behind the scenes" so to speak, but soon Players will hopefully see this roll-out and be reflected within the Game-World to great effect :)
Many thanks :D

P.S. Suggestions and feedback are always welcome! Now more than ever! So please feel free to use the new forums if you have any :) |
