Its possible, though I'm not keen on having levels shown. And if you really need it you can see it on the NWN character selection screen.
Incidently.. *looks at time4bed's signature* Isn't it "The heart is button to button?"
Edit: oops.. google proves me wrong.. oh well.. nm |

*shakes head* tut tut .... (back to the question) All I'm saying is that it would be nice to be able to look whilst browsing the web and doing other things, without having to start up NWN.

"the hardest button to button" time4bed, isnt that out of a song by......? artist escapes me.
anyways to throw my .02 in, I think it would be neat to see a server status counter. allowing peeps to know how long the server has been up, and when it will auto-reset itself. |

*nods* Ive got a backyard with nothing in it, except a stick, a dog and a box with someting in it....
yeh i like that too Gene and you see; Players Currently IG can be resized and sit in the corner of your desktop so you can keep an eye on things and not miss your bestest buddies. I want chr. levs displayed so its easy to see when a likely party can be formed with my low lev. chrs. Come on people you know it makes sense :) |

Re: Players Currently IG Posted: 16 Jun 2004 05:08 PM |
time4bed,
I get what you're saying about wanting to know people's level as to possibly finding them to party up, but i also think there are people out there who like everything the way it is...no level listings on players for a variety of reasons, mainly being the meta potential and their character's anonymity. maybe if this is to be implemented, and i'm unbiased, then each player could have an option to display their level on the website the same way it works for the player's stone IG. some people would even like to see the identification of a character IG (showing attributes they possess) removed as well as this feature for the monsters lurking about. I think there are ways around it like making posts on the website to find groups to tour with ... i've done it before and many before me have as well. you may find yourself meeting up at a location and a player may be a level above or below you, but it really works with a good, creative post, tried and true. |

Re: Players Currently IG Posted: 16 Jun 2004 08:39 PM |
For myself, it would not really make much difference if the levels were shown on the site or not. Someone else noted it's displayed IG anyway, and sometimes with the PCinfo tool as well. It wouldn't bother me if it was shown, either.
The idea that I really do like is the reset timer. I'd seen it elsewhere such that at logon and death you are told when the next scheduled reset is (in addition to it being a menu choice on their PCinfo tool type thing). |

Thanks for your idea...
Given that we currently discourage players from thinking of levels as much as possible(they're really not important to the game at all), it's unlikely we'll ever put it on the info screen.
Sorry, that's the way we like it. |

.... and yet DMs do occasionally do say... "sorry, you're kinda too high/low a lev for this quest"
As much as we might like it not to be, levels are a part of the game Landru.
I have no opinion on this issue though. I don't honestly think it'd change my experience at all. |

I've never said that to a player, ever. For me, level is not a part of the game. Others opinions may vary, but the staff is generally aligned behind what I've said here. I don't want to get into a long, drawn out debate over this. I simply wanted to share the opinion that the staff holds on this issue. |

I'd have to agree with Landru. In any famous DND plot, not everyone in the story is strong enough to fight the 'big threat' or , 'monster'? What happened to the weak little child with unsurpassed wisdom, the annoying little gnome he does no more than openning traps for the party to run into?
Levels, in my opinion, just dictate who's able to handle the BATTLE encounters. There are plenty of puzzles, riddles, and dialogue which I hope( and very much believe ) The DM's includer in all their quests ;) |

What ?... You have a unique to vives as far as i know red crystal that can tell you at any time whilst playing this information, and nearly everyone chooses to use it... Kind of goes against the grain of what youre saying dont you think ?
But whatever. |

Re: Players Currently IG Posted: 18 Jun 2004 07:17 PM |
PC's have the option to hide this information if they want. And to be honest, I didn't even notice it showed the PC's level until you mentioned it.
The red crystal also isn't unique to Vives, or at least its not something that was created by any of our builders. The PC Info system was created by Scott Thorn <a href=http://nwvault.ign.com/Files/scripts/data/1028410032820.shtml">(Nwvault page)</a>. We added due to the large size of our world to make it easier for PC's to 'bump' into each other.
I feel that, like a womens age, a PC's level is a personal thing that they should have a choice of disclosing or not. Sure you can get an indication of the age, old, young, middle-age, etc. But you'ld never straight out ask them. Now that I am aware level is actually shown when ever the PC elects to be visiable on the PC list, I'm tempted to move the level indication to the class indication so that a PC can elect to be shown on the list but have their level still hidden. |

| To Alo's response re: the PCinfo tool... players already have the option to hide the level, the class+level breakdown, or all character info for each of their PCs, and thanks to a recent update, the option preferences are persistent across sessions and the character info is hidden by default. |

From what I can see in the script, you can only hide your level if your making yourself annonymous. I dont believe you can hide your level and still remain on the list.
Also, the only persistant option is the annonymous one. I don't like adding too many variables to the Database, unless its worthwhile. |

Re: Players Currently IG Posted: 30 Jul 2004 05:30 AM |
In light of whats been said in the 'new players' thread regarding use of the players stone and getting Newbies to find other players, i thought i would reignite this topic.
The gyst of which is: For those that want to use it , it can be very usefull to see who is playing whilst not having to actually boot up NWN and just to display the Chrs. levels would be real usefull to some of us. This isnt about meta. it isn't anti roleplay, its just a good idea. |

Re: Players Currently IG Posted: 30 Jul 2004 05:52 AM |
Ok, this is perhaps a little superficial since you can find out stuff from the NWN anyway, but I dont like that fact people can see what level you are. I would really like this to be an FOIG thing. You see someone fire off 10 arrows to your one, or launch 20 Magic Missiles in one go or have glowing blue eyes, you'll get a rough idea!!
I do like the idea of knowing where people are. This is metagaming but to me its acceptable, because how would you do it for real. You'd arrange to meet people, or leave notes. We cant do that, so this is the best alternative.
Sorry, what we actually talking about again? |

Re: Players Currently IG Posted: 30 Jul 2004 05:57 AM |
What level people are shouldnt really matter for meeting up and rp'ing. Sure it matters for going out killing things together, but quite often new players are just happy to meet anyone to talk to and give them some advice, and the players of certain high lvl chars are really, really nice when it comes to showing people around.
The players currently IG feature of the website is great. But I dont see a need to add levels onto it. Aside from anything else, there is no option for players to choose whether to be included or not, unlike the player stone.
My other worry would be that newcomers would look at the website, think great, everyone is level 15+, I wont get a look in. Whereas in fact the higher level characters might be very happy to see someone new to rp with, and show them around. As I watched happen briefly last night. Thanks to those involved, sorry I couldnt DM you more but was about to go to sleep...
Cheers,
Sean |

So it was you dropping stuff on my head - the bill for the underwear's on the way
And it's true, I have absolutely no problem at all showing newcomers around, though if possible I try to make sure I use a character a little bit nearer their level which is what I did last night.
I really don't think the level issue matters that much as far as the display's concerned, you can find it out if you're that worried when you first log anyway not that I bother.
