A couple of questions (server timing)
Posted: 05 Apr 2004 11:32 AM
Hopefully in the right forum.

Having reached a definitive level (5) and played around 18 hours online (with a dozen entries in the dirtnap league), I have a couple of questions.

First question:
Does the server record up to the minute character stats but not inventory stats? A couple of times now, when caught by a server reset, intentional or not, I noticed that I still had all my XP but my inventory was a bit behind. With the reset last night, I went from just over 2000 gold back to 245 but I did regain about 50 arrows and a potion of bull's strength that is still around after two uses (that's some bull!). If such is the case, I may have to exit/enter on occasion to ensure a save is recorded.

Second question:
How fast do critters regenerate in areas? I get the impression its almost immediate. For example, I cleared an area of kobolds (Wastelands?) and carried on into the next area with the fort. Shortly I figured it was time to head back to Midor to rest and dump loot. I popped into the first area only 5 to 10 minutes after supposedly clearing it and all the kobolds were back! (This was including a shaman right beside me who promptly dazed me - dirtnap time.)

This bothers me a bit as it seems to be at odds with the philosophy of the server, to encourage players to go out and explore. Most other servers I've been on, respawning takes place at set intervals (6 game hours or midnight or something like that). You can plan a trip deeper into the wilds by clearing an area and going on knowing that you have a secure area to run back through provided you don't take so long that more critters have had a chance to wander into the vacated space. Here it seems that you can't fight your way too far from a base because you're going to have to fight your way back even if you just cleared an area 2 minutes ago.

This also bothers me because it can almost appear that farming is going on. I left the Midor area simply because I got tired of having to beat up the same kobolds all the time just to try and get further into this world and I didn't want it to look like I was farming them.

I like the world, I wouldn't be posting this if I didn't, I'd simply leave (done that). And I figure this may have already been addressed in the past but since there are a number of us newbies around I thought I'd ask and seek clarification.

To answer you first question as best as I can without any actual knowledge, I'm fairly certain that there are different database entries keeping track of different things in your character, but I'm still pretty sure that when a reset happens, if you didn't save recently, you're gonna leave most of your progress.

I've found (I think) that if you select "Save Character" from the in-game options (hit escape) it will force the database to save your current character file. While I can't confirm this, I've had significantly less trouble (seemingly) when I save my character on a regular basis (pretty much any time before and after I do something important).

To respond to your second question, I too have been at odds with the speed at which monsters respawn. While we want to encourage exploration, it seems like you can't go anywhere without a small army and a pack ox of camping sites (not that you can actually rest without being attacked, being forced to fight with no preparation and probably very few spells, and then be forced to wait another five minutes while monsters are coming back SOON) because you have to plan to fight your way back the way you just came. For Balthor, this cuts the distance he can go (which is considerable regardless) in half, leaving the darkest corners (and therefore the most intriguing) of the world out my reach. I think that it would make sense to increase the respawn interval to an hour, or even two hours before respawns. Or even 48 minutes (one day). But that's just me.

To my knowledge, using the 'save character' on the client side does nothing with regards to server side saving, just makes a copy of your character on your local vault. To me, this makes sense, as if that were possible, it would be terribly easy for someone of ill intent to lag/crash or otherwise comprimise the server. I can tell you that location and XP is definatly saved at a greater rate than your characters inventory etc, though I cant recall the interval off the top of my head.

Respawns, again, i'm not certain of the interval, but you bring up some good points that I think are worth reviewing.
