From the Writings of Dina Isilme Posted: 25 Mar 2004 02:59 PM |
The elven ideal is gone. The sense of our community is lost. There was once a time when, in that hour which is most bleak, one could stare at their foe, with all of their elven pride emanating from within, knowing that, even as death came close, to die as an elf was an honor.
These were the times, when each bow was blessed, not just to be swift or true, but to carry forth the message of the elven way: what was right was right, regardless. These were the times, when elder elves looked forward to the twilight hours in which they would show the youngest of elves the rudimentaries of sword and bow play. From even that most early time, an elf was taught to raise her sword with the pride of her entire kingdom and her peoples behind her. These were the days when the arcane, be it the magical bows of the archers or the wizardry of the mages, reigned supreme throughout, and the lore of our people was valued and treasured. These were the times when elven minstrels sang the songs of most beauty, spreading the tales of elven kings and queens, heroes and heroines, throughout the realms. These were the days when beauty amongst the elven lands was treasured and held sacred.
These were the days of grand elven festivals wherein the wine ran as the rivers do, and the song and dance eptitomized the melody and grace that is the elf. These were the days when cause to celebrate was celebrated and elven weddings and births were greeted with great merriment. These were the days of great hunts, by bands of elven warriors, working in total concert, knowing each other's strengths and using them to the best of the party's ability to hunt down foes far too dangerous for one elf alone. These were the days of elven craft that produced such wonders as cloaks of hiding, boots of grace, keen rapiers, strong swords, indestructable elven chain and perfect bows. These were the days when to be an elf meant one was never alone. An entire nation stood with you and moved through you. These were the days when, were one elven life to spare the rest, all would volunteer to die. To die as an elf for the sake of the rest, in that, there was no greater honor.
Our communion with the land and with each other was once so great. Young elves could be brought into the fold and the fold held all elves together under one common cause: the elven ideal. Individual pride was set aside, for the good of all. Even those elves who did not agree, would set their differences aside for the good of the elves.
Yet, this was also a time of isolation. When the elves withdrew to protect their own, and only their own, above all. When the image of elves as haughty beings with little concern for others but themselves came to the fore'.
When I look to see what has become of the elven community, my heart is heavy. Torn apart by rivalries, individual ambitions and lack of cohesion, we are but a fragment of a once strong community. Would it mean anything were the words spoken that the elves were on the march?
When I think of the elves that have fallen from the path, my heart is saddened. Were our community intact, would these elves have strayed? In the elder days, the temple of Aros would have never been defiled by an elf, for no elf would ever have been allowed to fall so far ere the community rescued them.
When I think of the elves I have met in this land, my heart is filled with hope. I know the ideal lives in them, and this communion is for what they long. As a broken blade, we must reforge the meaning of the elf, the elven way, the elven essence. Personal pride must be put aside, replaced with elven pride. The knowledge that one, as an elf, bears the collective weight of all the elves yet walks with their collective strength. We must come together, rekindle our lore and take in the new elves and teach them the elven way. Once again, our bows must be drawn in unison, and our swords unsheathed together in a singular deafening roar. The arcane must once again rise within us, for all of us to treasure, and beauty and art must come forth in every action we undertake, be it composition, craft or combat. We must come together, our individual diversities like arrows in a communal bow. Thence, we shall once again be a proud and strong race, capable of defending what is ours, what is Aros' and what belongs to The Mother.
Yet, we must stray from the isolation of the past. We are elves, and we must set the example. The elven spirit is what we treasure, not the purity of one's elven blood. Those with human blood, must not be shunned if they cradle the elven spirit. Those with no elven blood, but who demonstrate the spirit to us, must be welcomed as elf-friends.
Furthermore, in times of need, when the elf lands are not imminently threatened, but another of the goodly folk is, we, as a collective force, must come to their aid, for what is right is right, and we must always fight for that. A threat to the good peoples of vives is a threat to us as well. Thus, we will not repeat the mistakes of our father's father's fathers. Instead, our collective communal strength and will shall shine forth as a beacon of hope for all the good peoples of Vives and strike as a sword of good to the evil peoples of vives. The evils of this land shall know that to threaten the good of the land is to awake the ire of the elven nation, and that prospect shall strike fear in all the evil hearts of the realm.
I will no longer sit ideally by and watch the decay of the elven spirit. Aros will bless us when we show our solidarity. This I vow, and on that vow, I place my heart.

Finally!
Dina is raising her bow and taking a stand. I'm thrilled to see what she will do with this new found fervor.
Well done.

Macha blinks, the beginnings of fear in her eyes. She knows what can come of elven pride, to those who aren't fully elven. This has been a safe place for her from those persecutions, so far. She likes Dina, even trusts her...she trusted her mother too...
Frowning, she considers the implications. She would need to speak to Dina of this, and see what it really meant. And what it might mean, to her. |

Though I know not my elven father, I know well the love and companionship of Aros. All that is elven in me is pledged to the cause of elven honor, dignity, love, and unity. The human in me, born as I am the daughter of Mercuriel Emeria of Midor, seeks ever to reach out to all other races of Vives that stand in the name of good -- for indeed the good of the elves is forever entangled with and inseparable from the good of all! My voice and my bow will ever sing out in the name of this cause!

After all, someone has to stop her from doing reckless and wild things.
