Latest tour & xp system Posted: 17 Mar 2004 02:32 AM |
Thanks for the tour guys. It was very brief but I enjoyed it, until the Fire Giant decided to step on me with his size 80 shoe. I gathered a little bit of xp and now know a place I will not be visiting again.. heh
hill giants = 1 xp Fire giants = 7 xp Lich = 14 xp
at this rate i would need about 225 more lich kills to raise a level. *laugh* and I'm only 4th. I cant imagine doing this ultra extreme treadmill upto 10+.. There has to be a secret to this exp system. i will read the player handbook and try to figure it out.. something is not quite right. Liches shouldn't = 14 xp. I think it has to do with the way the group is formulated or my level vs the lich's.. i dunno but it sure is strange.
Bandits near midor give about 5 xp, skeletons give about the same or a little less.. what should I be fighting at my level? anyone have an idea?

Wizards combat XP is suplemented by spell casting XP. That's where the main source of XP for wizards is meant to be.
On combat XP....
The XP system is desgined to devalue after time; thus if you run around the world with massive level characters like happens on tours (And that's absolutely fine, I do it.), the end result is a massive injection of XP, however also a massive devaluing of XP. Also bear in mind that the high levels have a great effect of the XP you get before it devalues- then the XP's just about the same.
Thus touring with higher levels means that, essentially, massive level creatures will give a wizard about the same XP as killing a kobold. I imagine partying with other level 4s and visiting a low level area would probably give you net -more- XP.

Can we confirm what the l;evels are for things please?
i.e. after killing a hil or mountain giant a hundred times (or a troll) how much do people get? the lowest after numerous kills -should- be the creature's CR value..... (hence kobolds will lower all the way to 1).
Thism as I said -should- be the case, but can folks let me know if it isn't? :)
Cheers

I seem to get random amounts for killing things and casting. Now I know the XP devalues but sometimes I'll get say 5 XP another 6 another 2 XP for casting a spell. Kinda curious as to how.
As for the whole gaining levels things, I know this can sometimes upset other PCs but the key to advancing as a mage is Kill by Casting. You can double the XP you get per creature, perhaps even more. Also cast one defensive spell before approaching combat and cast the rest whilst in combat if you can. Otherwise you cast 5 spells and only get XP for the first. If course you run the risk of being underprotected.
One final point 8th Level appears to be the barrier for Sorcerers at least. Before this you will die lots, and not have enough spells to do much. Once you reach 8th there are some good defensive spells that will keep you alive and you will have more fire power. This will mean less Respawn loss and more Firepower XP.
Trust me. I struggle so much to get from 5th to 8th. I died almost once a day of RPing. It got really frustrating. But once I reached 8th there it was.
Oh and try not to use your familiar. You lose so much XP that way. I know its a dichotomy, use familiar stay alive, get XP, lose Familiar lose XP, or dont use them, dont get XP but dont lose any either. But trust me the pay off is much better until you are high enough to protect them. Either that or be VERY fast at unsummoning. |
Never argue with an idiot. They drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.

| The XP system is JUST fine, people complain though the XP system is much better and esier then some months ago. Try getting some people close to your level, just go explore that a huge source of XP, and theres something the high levels can do for you =) |
Why search around when the answer is within you...?

I like it, but a little suggestion. If possible, give a larger XP bonus for when you are fighting the creature for the first time. and for everytime you kill a similair creature you get less Xp, just an idea. |

Thats pretty much how it is now. You start at a certain level of XP for a monster, dependent on your class combat modifier, which then decreases as you kill them more often.
In large parties, and in parties of greatly disparaging level, you'll not get much XP as the 'challenge' is greatly lessened. |
