Why do you stare at me with such fear on your face, young elf? Half of what you fear stems from what you think you know about me and the other half stems from what you do not know. Let me at least give lucidity to the half that is unknown to you. Am I going to kill you? Come child, do not begin weeping, for I have no reason to steal your miserable life from you. You seem confused as if you expected me to reach over and "drink you soul" or some nonsense such as that! Young one, I am not so different than you.

Earlier, you mentioned you were raised in the wonderous valley of Ferein. I too was raised in its woodland folds. It was there, like you, that I learned the esteemed cultures, traditions and ways of our people. It was also there that my mother and father made a name for themselves for their precisely cut gems and finished jewelry. It was also there that as a little girl, I learned what it truly meant to be an elf and to be proud of such heritage...it was also there that spat upon the forest in disgust for my people's bigotry and narrow-mindedness.

You look surprised at such words? Let me tell you a story. There was a time when a little girl would wave goodbye to her parents every few weeks as they left the safety of Ferein to explore the land of Vives to find the next rich deposit of gems. Such exploration was inherently dangerous, frequently placing the little girl's parents in harm's way. But they always returned.

The little girl missed the time away from her parents terribly and it was all her Aunt could do to keep her mind stimulated and away from worrying about her mother and father. As the decades passed, the little girl slowly became a young woman and still she wept every time her parents would leave to mine more gems for their trade.

When the little girl was a mere seven decades of age, there came a time when her parents did not return when they promised they would and she became concerned. The days turned to weeks and the weeks became years. The grief and worry of the young woman for her parents was overwhelming. Almost a year later, her father Mithias and her mother Fillayn emerged into Ferein late one eve. When they entered Ferein, they were met with angry shouts and warnings of death. You see, the little girl's parents returned to Ferein "changed". When I say changed, they had become the substance of nightmares: vampires. The young woman cared little that they had changed, she was joyful that her parents were back. They ran to embrace their only child, but they never made it to her. Thinking the mother and father a "threat to the elven people" the Ferein archers cut them down where they stood. The young woman screamed in agony and horror as her parents were slain in front of her, but it did not end there. The elven wizards of the city went on to find their places of rest and drive wooden stakes in their breast so that they could never know life again. Never got to explain that they returned to see their daughter. Never got to explain that they did not wish quarrel with their own people...

I am that little girl, child. I am that young woman that witnessed her parents slaughtered like some rabid monster in front of my very eyes. Is this the people you hold close and dear? Do you think your parents would ever perform such an act? Surely they wouldn't...but they did.

Now stop crying, child. There is more to this little story other than the betrayal of the elven people. That very instant, I grabbed what few belongings I had and I left Ferein, intending not to return. I knew my parents had recently come from the Steepes of Syn to mine a vein of rubies that could be found there so that is where I sojourned to.

You must understand my mindset, child. I felt betrayed by the elven people, betrayed by the place I had called home for decades and great sorrow for the loss of my parents and subsequently, my best and only friends. Was this an extreme reaction to the circumstances I was given? Perhaps...perhaps not. All I know is that I entered the Steepes ready to die.

Once I reached the steepes, it was in the middle of a frightful storm with rain whipping down and lightning crackling overhead. I found a rocky outcropping that provided only a modicum of protection from the elements, but it was enough to allow my weary, starving body to sleep. My last thought before I shut my eyes was the utter contempt and hate for my people.

You see, once I woke up from that sleep, I was changed. Little did I think that anyone paid attention to me other than my parents, but apparently there was another that watched me...Syn. He came to me in my dreams and gave me visions of sweet vengeance under his banner. His ultimate creation was indeed the vampire and my parents were two of his children, for he too wished ill of those that would murder his children. It was then that I committed myself to Syn, who I consider my adopted father--the one entity that picked me up after I was broken. My Father grants me guidance and magics, far more than that bitch Elbereth ever did for me.

Oh, you are interested now, are you? What now for me? Well, that is a bit more complicated. Syn guides me and I do his bidding, after all I owe him my life. If he wishes for me to lay waste to this land, then it shall be so. Whatever he wishes of me, will be done. Subtlety is key, my child, in whatever I do. Whatever it is, it will most assuredly offend the delicate sensibilities of the masses...

Now, unfortunately our time together has come to a close. I have told you my tale and that is far too much to bear for an elf of your age. Tis' a shame that your parents were among those that killed my dear mother and father, I think you would have grown into a splendid elven male. I am afraid turnabout is fair play and I must send you to your demise.

Shhhh...Yes, yes, I know I did not have a reason earlier, but now that I have told you secrets which can never be revealed? You have now become a liability...

*THUNK*
