Monks Roll Call Posted: 08 Mar 2004 05:27 AM |
Aye - everyone who plays a monk - plz post your char's name here, the char's lvl, and wether that monk is a member of the Asashi or not - (and wether he is allowed in it's area or not)
and also - your timezone and the time you usually play.
I was told by someone that some of you thougt about starting a faction/guild for monks - but theres allready a faction not often used with "HQ"s and everything, so i think you might wanna use it..
I will try to arrange some events for monks only (and later on maybe to everyone that wanna come and hear/see) - so it is really importent that I will know plays monks and when you play so this will happen when most of the monks could come.

OOC:
well... at worst maybe we could invite significant others or best friends of monks to come along? This could also make for an interesting storyline as a few of us have been wondering about "the monk code" in regards to celibacy. Personally Im hoping having a significant other is ok considering that mine makes me a better, more fully fleshed out, person =p.
Sinjin assures honorable sirs that whatever the danger, the monks of Asashi will rise to the challange.
OOC : p.s. How about some murder mystery like the Name of the Rose or a secret society inside the monks that gets out of hand? |

Re: Monks Roll Call Posted: 09 Mar 2004 09:17 AM |
Well, Sinjin has posted an interesting question and, yes, I too have wondered about that celibacy thingie.
But then, if we postulate a world filled with magic, undead, and direct interaction with imaginary dieties, seems to me we could write our own rules on celibacy or non-celibacy.
I know which way would have to vote . . . . . |

Re: Monks Roll Call Posted: 12 Mar 2004 12:23 AM |
Aren Aesir is a monk. Not entirely certain he's actually joined Asashi, but he did travel there with some guidance and assistance early on. Perhaps the robes are his ticket to entry to the Asashi, though his preference is honestly to remain without affiliation (he's focused more on himself than on others).
re: monks and celibacy, and everything else (Read on, at your own risk, you've been warned!):
My own thoughts are that celibacy is a choice best left up to the player/character monk. I see no restrictions in either NWN, AD&D or Vives that would specifically prevent or allow it. I much prefer to define a monk as a way of life, more than a calling or a profession - as a being that searches out the meaning of life through a long arduous journey *within* one's self. For contrast, I see a cleric or druid as someone with similar philosophical questions, but they draw their enlightenment from faith in an external diety or force of nature - powers outside of one's self. Similarly, mages tend to draw their power from mastery of an arcane external force.
For myself, Aren is a man first, and a monk second. He's outside the 'norms' - if you define monks in terms of western ethos. There, they are, according to tradition, celibate hermits that live in caves or some such. Let's face it, if you're a crotchety old hermit by choice or by circumstance, living in a cave, there's no real question about whether or not you're going to be celibate. But I digress..
Aren then is a monk in the sense that he seeks to draw personal strength and enlightenment from within himself. Everthing is seen as a 'test'. A test of strength, of will, of mind over body. He is a conqueror, in that he considers success and achievement in terms of being able to conquer his own physical and mental limitations. Over time, he'll seek out ever increasing challenges. Celibacy is not factored into his life, though he may be celibate today. This is probably less from choice, and more from circumstance, though. After all, who would have a crude, half-balding common man, with no apparent direction or means of livelyhood, and a significantly over-developed sense of self-importance? The ladies are *not* circling his personals ad.
Admittedly though, he's a soft-heart for the elfish lasses, which in one respect represent some ideal representation of ageless beauty, wisdom, and grace. All things that would be attractive to someone that fits my definition of a monk. Thinking ahead, if one were to take a returning interest in him, it's most likely pre-ordained that she would lead to his ruin, and almost certainly serve to distract him from his inner journey. (Let's all hope that he can survive to learn some deeper lesson from the experience.)
On another topic.. he'll remain a 'pure' monk, as my own preferences for characters tend to be human and single-classed. I'm no expert role-player, so this helps provide an anchor of realism for me, in what can only be considered a completely unreal and fantastic world.
It's a long post, so thanks for the indulgence :) |

Re: Monks Roll Call Posted: 12 Mar 2004 10:57 AM |
I was actually wondering whether Asashi has any honoury posts. Like Defender of the Order or something like that.
I would love to be inturned into your order as a friend to all those that belong to Asashi. So many of my friends are members there, and in fact Evaramier (not that anyone knows this) as sworn that he would rather die than let a certain someone lay a hand on Sinjin.
Is this possible? |

Re: Monks Roll Call Posted: 12 Mar 2004 04:13 PM |
| master Evar is very touching. Perhaps we can explore this option as we examine the monk code and teachings more closely. Until then, he need not worry as he has the friendship of this monk, which although a mere pittance, may count as something towards the defence of the order. |
