Huge Weekend Update!!! Posted: 29 Feb 2004 03:27 PM |
*A s known by those who have witnessed the horrible tragedies that have befallen the fine city of Midor, our city is forever changed against the recent undead attacks by Gukathul and his foul minions. Steeled in our faith and in the guiding light of Midoran, however, we are stronger than ever, and seek to rebuild ourselves as the true bastion of glory and protectors in these lands. We will be looking into the strange attack on the once glorious Headquarts of the Azure Lights, which is now nothing more than smoldering rubble and smoking ruins. As well, the valiant Kruvious Seyon, second in command to the betrayer, Marick Fetter, has stepped up within our holy ranks and taken upon him the crown of responsiblity to become Fetter's replacement as the Head Priest of Midoran within the temple. Midor extends its thanks once again to all those who helped to repel the undead, and may Midoran's blessing be upon you all.
*Paws would like to welcome Fabius Bumbernob, a gnome from Brandibuck who has set up a small encampment on the edge of town to sell and hawk not only his wares of the tinkering spirit, but also allow those who toil in the craft to use his equipment he has lugged far through the woods and into Paws. We welcome him, and he in turn welcomes all tinkerers to come to Paws to make use of his tools.
*The old Paws Farm Refuge has been bought by the industrious Harner Loomtouch, half-elven lad who has grown up within Paws for most of his life. Renovating it for the use of his life-long trade as well as furnishing the back for the various injured farm animals in the region, he now offers the trade of tailoring to those who dedicate their lives to the skillful trade of clothing the lands.
*Recently, several adventurers who have taken various trips into the abandoned Port Royale mines, despite the Queen's advice to stay away from the crumbling mine shafts, have gone missing. As well, some of the townsfolk near the area have seen strange shadows in the night, creatures hissing and snarling at the entrance. Just this morning a trail of blood and torn clothing led into the mines, though what sinister beasts could be behind this are as yet unknown...
*The fine folks of Brandibuck have reported a recent earthquake (which the bakers have added wound up ruining a fine loaf of three grain bread) has unearthed a small cavern off the beautiful path of Ladriel. Exploring the small cave, it has been found that a large, gaping hole now sits in the center of the cavern, a fine mist coming up from the unknown depths. Though there are some who have gone to explore the hole, more exploration is needed before a larger area can be discovered far, far below.
*During the recent attack upon Midor, the small town of paws reported seeing a strange gathering of clouds and stormy skies off the storm-wrecked coast. Something is amiss off the coast, far to the east of Midor, where the once thriving island of Maldovia sits. Though the people of Maldovia have not been heard from in many, many years, trouble seems to be brewing near its troubled waters...perhaps Syn himself seeks to corrupt this land even more-so now that Gukathul has been repelled back...
((OOC))
*All crafting tools are now simple weapons...any class can use them *Small area/ambience changes to Midor Library (Outside & Cafe of Reflections) *Several new NPC's added *Ka'azim Outer Door Fixed *Various Map Pins Added to Midor/Port Royale *Various Map Pins Corrected (from older map versions) *The Black Pearl now has designated "resting" areas *Skybox added to Midor Docks *Skybox added to Maldovia *Area XP/Description fixed for 25 areas:
-Buckshire Store Room -Buckshire Mayor's House -Buckshire Scheppen's Home -Buckshire Ruins Tower -Mirghul Caverns -Oxen R' Us -Midor Prison -Midor Exotics -Midor Museum -Paws Farm Refuge -PR Cafe Del`Mar -PR Gem Trader -PR Broken Mask Tavern -PR Bath House -PR Black Pearl -Faloman's Retreat -Johanne's Music Shop -Neek's Bowstore -Maldovia - Town -Maldovia - Deep Woods -Maldovia - Valinor Tavern -Maldovia - Ruined Church -Maldovia - Sanitation -Maldovia - Syn Tower -Temple of Helris - Interior

hope you folks had good time ;)
I was present - do I get ooc xps? =P
btw - it's a really fun way to play, tho when you got more than 6 players it becomes really hard to control.
also - for the next time, plz all remmember your chars arent super heroes - you cant both block an attack, stab, run and cast a spell =P

| ((Jone Eagle was there at the beginning IG when she and Luther first saw the zombies coming toward Midor. Then the experience became totally surreal as I had no control over her movement at all. I missed the IRC playout because I couldnt quite envision how the whole bunch of us could have input, I didnt want to log back in at a later time with a dead char and have to try to get a dm's attention, and I was afraid that I would simply become a spectator which I find frustrating.)) |

Re: Huge Weekend Update!!! Posted: 01 Mar 2004 08:11 AM |
Firstly I would like to say that I was impressed how quickly the IRC alternative was sorted out and run and it worked very well and I was immersed as soon as it started - thank you and well done DMs in very tough circumstances.
But I also wanted to give a brief description of the event from my OOC perspective, so you could see what it was like from at least my POV. And this is meant to be constructive criticism & not meant to offend, because I do realise how lucky I am to have found such a wonderful RP PW, where so many people put in so much effort for no monetary reward :)
Stating the obvious,IG the first (and second) time round the lag was awful. I could barely move 5 mins from the start, didn't have a clue what was going on or where we were supposd to be. Then I crashed and re-loaded, to see messages that we were to start again in the Great Plains after the re-set. Saw a message saying that we should all disperse, but the server was taken down before I could get out of Midor.
So I loaded in again after the re-set & moved to the Great Plains. As soon as the undead were summoned I was totally lagged again. When I wasn't frozen, I was bouncing all over the screen, actioning things I had been trying to do minutes earlier. Then I reaslise that Fri'el, Phibrizzo & allies were killing people, who were lying dead on the floor. And it seemed it took people a while to decide that PVP was okay, and to start attacking them back. I was very confused about the PVP rules. Then I crashed & rebooted and couldn't move again when I got back in, so I logged out and just watched Sirac's screen instead. He wasn't faring much better and had died due to lag and whether he should be PVPing. but we could at least see what else was heppening whilst he was dead on the ground !
So suggestions from me that would help (at least from my perspective) are :
- On the event announcement, tell people to gather in small groups, not all on one map. Or tell people a few specfic locations to gather, and max 6 (or 10?) people at each place perhaps. I am not sure this is do-able from a DM perspective, but if it is I am sure it would help. Also maybe multi-objectives, so each group has a separate task, maybe even character level based ?
- Maybe shut down the web-site during the event ? People in IRC said that would help to lower the lag
- Clarify the PVP rules for an event like this on the announcement, or at least make an OOC comment like "this is a DM run event and there is a possibility of PVP". Then at least people will know that they are allowed to fight back !! IMHO this seemed like an RP excuse for a big PVP battle, with only one side fully aware of this, and this surprised me since Vives seems so anti-PVP.
- It was also not clear that the IRC events replaced ALL of IG events, i.e. the IG stuff never happened. This has a major impact on people's RP and IC relations.
I really wasn't sure if I should post this, but I have spoken to a couple of people after the event who also had concerns about the events, for some of the reasons mentioned above, so I thought it would be worth posting.
Thanks for reading this post in the tone it is intended And thanks to everyone who runs and DMs Vives, it is great !

Re: Huge Weekend Update!!! Posted: 01 Mar 2004 08:29 AM |
The lag wasn't much better from my perspective. Some of the PvP trouble came, I think, from me setting people to hostile so my summoned Balors would actually fight them. The knock on of that was, in the lag, everyone ran past each other even though they didn't see them. This led to AOOs, then a few people fighting, then everyone fighting. So sorry about that. =S
Another point is, NWN can -never- do army style combat. It just doesn't work. Too much lag, the rules don't make sense....
It was, however, a lot of fun to play out in IRC. Thanks to all who took part, the DMs especially. Made my evening a blast!
