Mailbox bugs and a request
Posted: 19 Feb 2004 06:13 PM
I've been planning to write this for a long while, but I always forgot. Yes, I have a faulty memory.

The reason I write it in here and not just use the bug reporter is to warn people (in a friendly wayWink).

When you use a bag and stash it in your mailbox and someone else clicks on it, it disappears. Like all items the bag goes for a split second to the character's inventory and then should return to the mailbox, but instead it simply vanishes. So please, do -not- click on a bag in someone's mailbox (if that mailbox doesn't belong to you).

Another bug in the mailbox concerns storing money. Just as with chests in your room you can store money in it, however unlike other items someone else can take that money (I found out the hard way, but I found the culprit and got refunded). So do not store money in your mailbox, or once again: do not click on money in a mailbox if it does not belong to you.

And then perhaps a small request: would it be possible to increase the stacking of gold? Now the maximum amount in a single stack is 50 thousand gp. If you make a stack above that, you'll lose everything above that (I found that out after it happened twice, I had no idea what was going on). Make two stacks of 50k and you're ok, however these stacks take up a lot of room and bigger stacks would be less consuming on the server as well I suppose (or is one stack of 100k = 2 stacks of 50k for the server resources?).

Luther McIath: I see, so [X is] the right person in the wrong place with the wrong people at the wrong time.

Mailboxes and persistant chests were never designed for gold storage and the fact you can put gold in there is purely a byproduct of standard bioware chest behaviour. The fact that gold does not have wieght in Vives means that there isn't even a good reason (yes I know it allows you to avoid the death tax to some extent, but I don't consider that a good reason). What I will do, is look at what can be added to the code to prevent the addition of gold so you dont have to worry about loosing any.

Regarding the bags, Q is the container in a container wiz.. he'd have to answer if there is any way to solve that bug.

Yes, I suppose most of us do keep money in chests, to avoid the 'death tax' to some extent. But (in retrospect it might not seem so, but I assure you it is) I'm used to pnp D&D where gold does weigh: 50 coins = 1 pound. Running around with 50 thousand goldpieces is absolutely ridiculous IMHO, for that would mean a thousand pounds (500 kg). That's a bit much for even the strongest among us ;).

Thanks for looking into it though :)

Well one -good- reason is so some Level 2 pickpocket can't walk off with 50000 weightless GP because NWN can't tell the difference between one pointer and another. For a lot of players that represents more than their life savings, and it makes no sense that they'd be walking around carrying it all if they had some place under lock and key to store part of it. So why not leave the code the same and say if someone wants to store a pile of 50000 GP instead of one of their 15 (possibly that valuable) items, they can choose to do that? After all, coins have size as well as weight.

Dieties preserve us from the evil chaotics named Lag, Crash, and Server Reset.
PCs: Loli Dankirk (Ftr 18/Brd 8.5 @ 1777 hrs) left Vives for Origins; Gnora Gnombody (Sor 5 @ 54 hrs) and Amanda Stark (Wiz 3 @ ~10 hrs) left Vives for Feline Providence.

Store gold in our room/home is completely aceptable IMO, no one walks around with his/her fortune in his bag.....

Why search around when the answer is within you...?

Yes the whole thing about having more than about 20k gold is a surprise to me unless you are trying to get a house, anyway. Otherwise I tyically dont know why one would have that much--and I really dont know why you should be expected to lug all of it around. So it would be nice to have a safe place to store it on those supposedly rare occassions you have it.

Well one reason a person would have a large qty of gold in their possesion is that there is little to purchase from vendors, thereby increasing their gold inventory. Since this is the case mayhaps you can cut the gold flow back. I'm still trying to figure out what to use the gold for. (besides buying real estate and some food once in awhile)

After my 'tour of duty' in Vietnam, I truly learned what the following phrase means...."I'd rather be 'Lucky' than good...."

Somehow people are getting the wrong idea... This was not a question for not storing gold in our chests, it was a question for raising the amount that could be put in one stack. And for the mailbox bug to be solved so that no gold could be stolen from it.

As for more than 20k gold... I have far more than that. The reason? I played for nearly 800 hours with Dias and didn't spend a whole lot on items (bought a robe once and some spells). Most spells I got from drops and I saved every single scroll I found. Then I also made armours and sold these (and now they're even worth more, although I don't make them anymore). So quite frankly: Xaranthir is rich (perhaps he's also a bit of a miser... he'd almost pick up every rusty dagger and sell it... >_< Yes, he's one of those who drags a half-plate to sell somewhere).

And like someone else stated, there isn't a whole lot to buy at the moment, except food. I don't buy melee weapons (wizard remember?), I don't buy armour, no shields, no ranged weapons (too much weight and I need every quickslot for my spells). The only other thing I sometimes spend money on are healing kits. That's it...

Nor is this a request to cut the gold glow back. Remember the treasure tables are already being adjusted (and they do seem good now). A lot of people are having a hard time to get gold to buy armour, etc. And not everyone has enough strength to collect armour and weapon drops to sell them.

I was looking at gold stacks last night and found the stacksize of gold is limited by bioware to 50k. This is most likely what causes the loss of gold if you put more into your chest. I dont know of a way around this, and frankly dont believe this is an issue that warrants finding a way around it. It is easily solved by not putting more than that in your chests, or going a step further and preventing the addition of any gold at all.

Regarding gold in your mailbox being 'stealable', again easily solved by not putting gold in your mailbox, or by preventing the addition of gold to it.

Well, I am quite new at Vives but it seems to me that we are missing an obvious point: large stores of gold with no use.

If people can't buy anything because the merchants don't have anything at that cost and they just hoard the gold, then something is out of whack. This hasn't impacted my lowly character, I need every gold piece I can find but it may in the future.

Solutions?:

(1) a donation to a church for goodies and maybe donation to evil causes for the less than nice types is a bit more in character than hoarding for some. Obviously this would be done with the help of DMs for the evil types.

(2) titles could be purchased for large sums of cash or having buildings named after ones character.

(3) better stuff at the merchants

(4) gems. I don't know how Vives handles this but how about letting characters buy gems without a loss in value when bought and sold (well maybe a small bit for the merchant and to account for the characters haggling skills). this way someone could purchase a beautiful diamond for 50k and be able to sell it for 50k +/- a few hundred.

(5) Banking: Yes this means even more gold as you could introduce interest. But with banking comes loans and raids on banks. think of the temptations for the more dishonest out there as well as the incentive of the law abiding to protect ones valuables in a bank.

If I am way of base on some (or all) of these, please forgive me, I am but a stranger in this land.

Foli Silverdeep

I wish I knew what I was supposed to do.
