Auberon's Songbook
Posted: 17 Feb 2004 12:27 PM
(( OOC: I'm heading out of town for vacation for a week or so and then starting a new job. I had a few songs I haven't played, so I figured that I'd post them here for anyone who wants them... Just realize that you may hear them again at some point if I play for you IG *grin* ))

Bard's note: Well, I met up with Quinn, had a quick adventure, and then was rushed to the Seven Sisters. Along the way, I encountered something that seemed like a fantastically fun song idea!

THE DAY THAT QUINN AND I GOT STONED

Now me and my buddy Quinn, we met at the Four Winds.
We'd both heard of the rumors and seen the signs.
We packed all our bags and headed north to see the ruins,
But to get it right, ya gotta read between the lines.

Now me and Quinn were both lookin' for adventure.
I gotta say, even if it seems a little 'blunt'.
With all the screamin', bleedin', and running...
We musta been crazy to pull that stunt!

And that was the day that Quinn and I got stoned.
Snake-headed woman lit us up, our travels were postponed.
Somewhere in Lynaeum, way up in the towers,
Quinn and I just stared at the wall for hours and hours.

Now when the smoke had cleared, we headed back downstairs,
Where your favorite bard nearly met his demise.
I was running like a lunatic screaming "Help! I'm on fire!"
While Quinn giggled in the corner with his bloodshot eyes.

And that was the day that Quinn and I got stoned.
Apparently not something that Midor condoned.
But that medusa face just unveiled,
I swore to the jury that I never inhaled!
That was the day that Quinn and I got stoned.

You are a sick, sick puppy. *giggle*

Callia will have to use her most powerful healing spells on you.

Bard's note: It's always difficult compiling an anthology... And many songs don't follow well with others. For the purposes of this songbook, however, instead of grouping them together, I'm going to just put them in reverse order they were written in.

This is an elven song I wrote when I finally visited Ferein. May I want for no other place now. It translates well, but the lyrical quality is more obvious in Elven.

FEREIN TREE

The quietest kiss of the morning dew,
That fogs my vision with dreams of you.
Although my feet may tread lands most barren,
Eventually I'll be at rest in Ferein.

The waterfall spray wets my lips that are dry,
Where the waters are clear and the falcons still fly.
Although I'll die fighting far away toils,
Please bury my body in Ferein soils.

When my tale is told, I'll never look back.
When the sun finally sets, and all goes black.
When I fall on the field and my blood flows free,
Please bury my body under a Ferein tree.

Bard's note: I've written a few songs of companions I've travelled with. I have many others in the works! Everyone I've met is more than worthy of a song, it's just finding the right style, verse, and hook to get it to work.

THE BRANDIBUCK DUNBROOK, INDEED

Of halflings, I must admit I know little.
Other than to watch my treasures.
But there is one, friends, who quite transcends,
The size of his simple measures.

It's Kayel Dunbrook of the Brandibuck Dunbrooks,
A noble young lad, indeed.
His documentaries will fill the libraries,
He's as fine as a half-pint of mead.

It's Kayel Dunbrook of the Brandibuck Dunbrooks,
Eating fresh ham or moldy bread.
It's witch hag stew, or Orc fondue,
His appetite's bigger than the helm on his head.

It's Kayel Dunbrook of the Brandibuck Dunbrooks,
I'd want for no other companions,
With Kriyna and he, we'll sail the salty sea,
And walk along the edge of the canyons.

It's Kayel Dunbrook of the Brandibuck Dunbrooks,
A noble young lad, indeed.
His documentaries will fill the libraries,
He's as fine as a half-pint of mead.

Bard's note: Another true story! Well, it was a PAJWT where I met Melphus. When we encountered a house with a strange beast inside, I simply made the comment that perhaps Melphus could speak with it... And you know how that goes.

MELPHUS AND THE YETI

There's a Yeti in the house, over there!
There's a Yeti in the house, over there!
Melphus can speak to many things,
Like trees, and dwarves, and mythic beings,
But when he went for a chat, he got struck by a chair!

Melphus got hit by a chair! (All together)
Melphus got hit by a chair!
He's studied to this ripe old age,
But he's not quite yet the Yeti sage,
Instead of Yeti greetings, he shouted a swear!

Now Melphus' hearing is a tad betraying,
He bobs along after the music stops playing.
But when it comes to animals, no one else can compare.
And he's the resident expert on deconstructing a chair!

There's a Yeti in the house, over there!
There's a Yeti in the house, over there!
Melphus can speak to many things,
Like trees, and dwarves, and mythic beings,
But when he went for a chat, he got struck by a chair!

Bard's note: Just an odd little song I wanted to do for audience participation. When events happen in the song, you're supposed to mimic them, either the sounds or the shouts! Canton said it would be a fine drinking game, so perhaps even dwarves will enjoy it!

SOKE' AND THE HONEYDEW CAN

Soke' and the Honeydew Can,
Made quite an impression on the king.
When asked, of course,
The prince's horse
Whinied (nehehehe) the most absurd thing!

He whinied that these were amazing times,
The marvelous he could remember.
Like a gnome lumberjack,
Eating a hundred flap jacks,
He stopped and shouted 'TIMBER!'

Soke' saw the Honeydew Can
In the back room of the cellar.
He stooped to pick it,
Accidently kicked it.
Started cussing like a sailor! (yamma stamma stamma)

Now Soke' and the Honeydew Can
Were sometimes incredibly mean.
But when he was dead,
The executioner said
"His head came off quite clean!"
(Swoosh and stomp ground)

Bard's note: We all want stories of triumph and wild success in the face of danger! I accidently stumbled into it when I first met Nero... Well, I haven't seen him since, but after this I can't imagine that he's come to any harm.

THE HERO NAMED NERO KHALDOON

There's a hero named Nero Khaldoon,
Whose legend shall make women swoon.
His manner mysterious,
Will leave you delirious,
This hero named Nero Khaldoon.

I saw it all with mine own eyes,
At the gates, under Midoran skies.
The card he was showing,
Began to start growing!
From the smoke, a dragon did rise.

It was a huge and formidable beast.
On the innocent town would it feast.
But Nero drew blade,
As if on crusade,
With fervor the action increase!

And one, by one, the guards started to cry.
"Please help us Gods, we're all going to die!"
But Nero the hero, so bold and so brave,
Fought blindly, alone, til the dragon was slayed!

There's a hero named Nero Khaldoon,
Whose legend shall make women swoon.
His manner mysterious,
Will leave you delirious,
This hero named Nero Khaldoon.

Bard's note: It was in the great plains when I first met the mysterious Shaz'jen Diretch, the steadfast Loli, Guellenar Tider and Blanche La Belle. While we were talking of demons and trouble, giant trees walked from the woods and attacked us. Fortunately, I was able to get out of the way of the action to document notes for this song!

TROUBLE IN MIDOR

Trouble... is brewing... in Midor.
From outer borders, to inner gates.
Trouble... is brewing... in Midor.
What destiny drives our fates?

The trees have left their forest.
Journied from Slyvian trail.
Dragons are spotted, beyond these walls!
To deliver our bodies to hell.

Trouble... is brewing... ALL OVER!
From the Four Winds to Icy Vale.
Trouble... is brewing and what are you doing?
To deliver us from a most dreadful tale.

You see, we will need the valor.
Of a thousand paladins brave.
Women or men, be foe or be friend,
Join together or join in the grave!

Trouble... is brewing... in Midor.
From outer borders, to inner gates.
Trouble... is brewing... in Midor.
What destiny drives our fates?

Bard's note: This one has been posted on fliers and around Port Royale a few times, but for completeness I'm including it here. It's a fun little ditty about a fun little ditty.

PICKSTON AND JESSUP WILD TOURS

If size is a thing that you measure by height,
Then you're left with the knowledge you cannot be right.
'Cause Pickston Ricktick's as tall as the skies,
His cleverness darts nearly as fast as his eyes.

And Jessup the Younger is stronger than you,
His admirers many, his enemies few.
He'll dazzle you with tales of his heritage race,
You'll enjoy them thoroughly or he'll smash in your face.

But this peculiar partnership is splendid indeed,
For the budding adventurer looking to succeed.
They'll take you on tours of this land kind and fair.
Like the Fiirkrag Mountains and the Pits of Despair.

It's the Pickston and Jessup Wild Tours, Tours, Tours!
Please be sure to bring a clean pair of drawers!
It's fun and exciting for the whole family,
It's a rousing adventure, it's a ju-bi-lee!

It's the Pickston and Jessup Wild Tours, Tours, Tours!
Just a walk in the park! (With a few detours)
Nothing to fear, but we must ask a favor,
Please sign along the dotted line of this simple waiver.

Bard's note: Another one that's 'been around the block' so to speak. My very first hit! Here for posterity, no doubt.

NOTHING LIKE AN ARROW TO THE GUT

Oh... There's...
Nothing like an arrow to the gut.
It's funnier than bludgeoning, most surprising than a cut.
It'll make you spring a leak,
That'll take a week to heal!
But it's straight! And to the point!
And more dramatic than a kill.

Yes... There's...
Nothing like an arrow to the gut.
No matter if you're pretty, or fat and ugly as a mutt.
It'll fill you up with wood and iron,
Instead of buttered bread.
But it's better to have a little prick,
Than get it in the head.

(Intermezzo)
Now I know just what you're thinking,
That I've certainly gone quite mad.
When I'm jesting of your wounds,
While you're lying nearly dead.

But please do understand
My point of view at this occasion.
From a scientific standpoint,
It's a "linear" equation!

Oh... There's...
Nothing like an arrow to the gut.
It's funnier than bludgeoning, most surprising than a cut.
It'll make you spring a leak,
That'll take a week to heal!
But it's straight! And to the point!
And more dramatic than a kill.

Bard's note: My very last for this anthology. But also a very special one to me. There's certain things we don't speak of. Deeds done, secrets broken, mistakes we've made, and of course... those we've lost. So this poem is dedicated to my brother Grymm, who fell too fast and flew so far.

THE EAGLES FLY

From the beacon of the shimmering sea,
Lay your weapons down with me.
Together, we shall row to shore
and fight the beasts of myth no more.

For two by two our armies fell,
Devoured by the demon spell
Fire and ash rain down again
From what beginning and to what end

In your heart, the answer lies
A noble deed drenched sober eyes
Together we shall man the gates
In answer to the fate that waits

Nightfall, black and deadening sound
To feel the armies in the ground
Rushing feet of thundering rows
Murderous thoughts of dread and woe.

Before we clash, I hear a call
In the skies, above it all
An eagle! Soaring free and proud.
Beyond the reach of the plaguing crowd.

And as the eagle drifts away,
I realize all will be okay.
Men will rise and men will die,
But beyond it all, the eagles fly.

---

Thank you all for listening, as always! A bard is only a bard when he aims to entertain.
