Just found the answer to my own question. Abiword. Seems to be a very good substitute for Word or even Quark considering its free.

Check it out for yourself.

Anyone know of something better? Let me know and I'll have a look.

Open Office is really the way to go. Everything Microsoft has, and free. Can't go wrong. I give it two thumbs up!

I just got a new pc and decided that office at several hundred was a bit too rich for my blood. I dl'd openoffice. Its not bad. As with any transition there is a learning curve to get to know its interface but overall the WP functions are great. I would add a word of caution, however. If you want db capabilities and/or use very large spreadsheets openoffice is not the same as MS Office. there is VERY limited db in openoffice and the spreadsheet is much slower when opening/sorting/manipulating large datasheets. Otherwise a great system.

Disclaimer: Through my work, I was recently able to purchase the whole MS office suite for home use only for $21 bucks!!!!

I wish I knew what I was supposed to do.

*In Computer Value Added Reseller ModeWink*Thats cool, but is it completely legal what they sold you? For most home users it doesn't really matter, but its something to keep in mind. If it is an OEM version, it must be installed on the system it was originally sold with. If it was an Open Licence version, they are non transferable. Your company can allow you to use it (if they have an adequate number of licences of course), but the licence itself must remain in the companies name. The only truelly legit way would be if they sold you a full version of the software they are no longer using and gave you the Certificate of Authenticity with it, or if they sold you an Upgrade version, with the CoA, as well as the software it was upgraded from (again with a CoA).

Like I said, unless it being legit with the licence concerns you, I wouldn't worry about it. But, if your company gave you the impression that they sold you a legit copy for $21, you may want to be sure.

The only version I know of that cheap new would be a Charity Licence purchased by a non-profit company under the open charity licence program. These are about $100Cdn for Office Pro IIRC.

I appreciate your comments. This was directly from MS ( i ordered from them, billed by them & shipped from them)- the catch is if i leave my current employer, license is void.

I wish I knew what I was supposed to do.

I would add a word of caution, however. If you want db capabilities and/or use very large spreadsheets openoffice is not the same as MS Office. there is VERY limited db in openoffice and the spreadsheet is much slower when opening/sorting/manipulating large datasheets.

Some additional comments:

OpenOffice supports any database via odbc or jdbc. You can use oracle, sqlserver, postgres, mysql, whatever as long as you have a driver installed.

Pressing F4 from within the spreadsheet application gives you access to this functionality. From there, you can define your data sources, edit your tables, create your queries. It works quite well.

The spreadsheet does not support all the functions that Excel has, and it only supports 32K rows (as opposed to Excels 64K. The data sorting and filtering capabilities of Excel are a little better as well.

If you want a graphical query builder / forms tool, then Access is still a good bet.

The last downside is the lack of an email client like Outlook. Mozilla mail comes close enough for most uses.
