Re: The Sickening of Ferein

The skies above most of Ferein remain dark, as the ceaseless winds and blizzards continue. The trees are silent, bird life having fled elsewhere, while the beasts that formerly dwelt throughout the realm have retreated to the Sacred Grove.

The Sacred Grove is restored to its usual self, due to the return of a fragment of one of Elbereth's Tears which was found by chance.

The head of the order, Náriël Arnatuilë, and the mages of Tel'Elena, led by Camthalion, continue to investigate the whereabouts and number of other fragments in an effort to bring tha malady which affects Ferein to an end.

The Council of Ferein has met and urged a search for the missing fragments and the one Tear which remains unaccounted for, being used it is thought by the Lord of Undeath to cause the problems Ferein is experiencing. This will mainly devolve on those that hold true to the Mother, those who follow Aros being more than aware of his words regarding seeking out and exploring the places of undeath.... and as yet, Aros has not spoken.

Within Ferein, as the despair deepens, there is at least a glimmer of hope as the real looks towards the small patch of clear sky above the Sacred Grove knowing that the Mother is still with them.

((OOC - As before, any elf entering Ferein will feel the unease, the overwhelming sense of wrongness, bordering on despair - and heightened for those who are druids or rangers. Other races of such leanings will also feel this affect, though not to the same degree as any with elven blood. This effect will be, for any who have previusly visited, much worse than before, and grows with each passing day. It is felt throughout Ferein - except in the Sacred Grove, where the skies are clear, the snow has ceased, and a sense of normality and peace has returned))

For the next two days all Calia was doing was refusing requests to go and look attack or in some cases scout out all the known places of undead.

She had to admit that she was starting to think that perhaps it might be a good idea to have a look she hoped that she could contact Aros and put her case to him....

The search has begun....

Servants of the Mother and those with a will to aid Ferein have begun the task of seeking out the Lost Tear of Elbereth, aware also that the shards of that which was destroyed must also be found.

All within Ferein look from the darkness to the light of hope that shines from the Grove and join their prayers to those of the druid order for success and perhaps salvation from the further horrors that might await the realm.

The Elven people no longer walk the forests and walkways of Ferein alone, the corruption is now so deeply rooted that the unthinkable has happened and the shades of those long passed walk the realm once more.

Spirits of Elves long dead appear, their grief and despair at being dragged back from the peace of their rest apparent in their tears and cries of anguish.

As the search becomes ever more urgent the realm itself sinks ever deeper into darkness....

Nariel looked up from her prayers, turning to the younger druid who stood silently at the edge of the grove with head bowed, unwilling to interrupt.

Standing, Nariel turned to her with an encouraging smile.

"There is news?" She asked, her voice, as usual, so soft that it could barely be heard.

The younger elf nodded sadly, "Aala, nothing was found... another lies empty of all sign."

Nariel closed her eyes briefly in sadness, then opened them once more, "Has Elmirie sent further word?"

"Aala, My Lady, there is another place," said the druid, passing her a sheet of parchment.

Nariel read the finely written elven script rapidly then turned to the girl again, "I know of it, perilous indeed." She glanced briefly up at the break in the cloud above the Grove then around at the blackness of the cloud that surrounded it, "But it must be done, and soon, time runs ever swifter and despair grows. Send word to Elmirie to meet them nearby. I shall make arrangements to have those interested informed."

"Of course My Lady," said the younger elf before bowing and running off to do her bidding.

Nariel turned once more and stared at the statue of Elbereth, fingering the shard in the pocket of her robe.

Closing her eyes briefly the sadness could not be kept from her expression, "Watch over them Mother of all, I fear they will need it."

Adarin stood miserably up to his knees in the snow, cringing inwardly as one of the awakened spirits floated past howling in agony, and shivered.... not from the cold but the unease.

"Just two hours to go before my duty ends", he thought, "then at least I will be home and can close the door against these poor unfortunates."

He lifted his eyes to the east, just making out the patches of light above the Temple and the Grove through the blizzard.... at least progress was being made.

He glanced to his left, to where his colleague stood, widening his eyes in surprise at the deep red that lit his complexion. Adarin turned sharply towards the statues in the square, which to his surprise were just as before.... though the tree....

He watched in horror as the tree began almost to die before his eyes, leaves falling to the ground. Turning once more to his colleague he followed the latter's gaze and looked up to the skies in horror.

"Gods!" He cried... "they are turning red!"

Re: The Sickening of Ferein

The earthquakes faded, the skies above the city of Ferein returned to darkness, or at least over what once was the city of Ferein.

The darkness of the clouds above is enhanced by the pall of smoke and dust from where the Inner City once stood, now gone. All that remains is the rubble, the still burning embers.... and the many bodies of those who failed to escape, deep below at the foot of the unclimbable precipices that surround the once fair realm.

Amid the debris lies the Lost Tear, now forever lost, irretrievable.

Yet hope remains amid the despair and the mourning, Gukathul will at the very least lie dormant for some time, horrifically wounded - perhaps even killed - by Aros in the heart of his own temple.

While the now clear skies above the temple are darkened temprarily once more by the funaral pyres of those who have passed and whose bodies have been recovered, hope grows within those who remain.

The Princess yet lives, as do others among Ferein's leadership. living in hiding and securely under guard. Even as the city burned, the first thought was of rebuilding... Ferein will rise again.

For now, all eyes turn once more to the Temple and the Grove. No longer need the Elves seek out the places of the Undead, though search they will. Five shards of that Tear which was destroyed remain to be found and even now those who are fit, who are not needed in the processes of healing and rebuilding, depart the realm to seek out clues as to where these shards might lay.

Amid the grief, the despair, the mourning - a new mood appears among the Elven of Ferein. Determination.... a steely resolve to recover what is theirs and restore their realm to its lost beauty.

((Those who took part yesterday - and those who have since found out - will be aware that there is now no way of gaining access to the Treeline Walkways and Inner City areas of Ferein, nor of entering Ferein from the Walkways. Should any player have a character who was logged off there before yesterday's event, please contact myself or another member of the DM team either by PM, IG or on IRC and you will be 'rescued'))

"My Lady," said the young druid, "word has come... one of the shards"

Nariel looked up from her prayers, her voice as soft as ever, but also, as always, commanding, "Word? From whom?"

"Aeladhrial, my lady," continued the other, "she sends word of a small expedition into Undreath, Sister Gwyneira was there also."

"Gwyneira? Good... what does she say?" said Nadriel, suddenly interested.

"They progressesd as far as a small party may in relative safety my lady, Aeladhrial says that the presence was felt by Gwyneira near to Naruth's Pyre, outside the beholder caves."

"I see," said Nariel, a brief flicker of pain crossing her expression, "send word to all then, it must be done."

"Yes... yes my lady, of course."

The younger druid retired hurriedly as Nariel returned to her prayers, including among them now those for the safety of those who assisted

Calia laid there her legs trapped under such a large amount of rocks and dirt she feared she might actually lose her legs.

The pain of all this was the spells she had left to call wouldn’t help as much as kill anyone in the area. The eerie light that that illumined the small space she was in came from her sword that was too far to be of any use.

In elven Calia spoke softly but loudly to a young elven boy who was lying quiet and motionless about 3 feet from Calia.
Llessur
Llessu’ Trauts can you hear me?.. Llessu? You must wake up. The young boy didn’t move to the sound of the Priestess’s callings, and she looked quite worried.

The young boy had before the quakes been talking to the Priestess about his fears that his brother might have been hurt and that he wanted to go and try and rescue him. Calia had noticed the pride in the young boys voice when he spoke of his brother and it was that which made her want to help this young elven boy. She couldn’t decide if it was a good of bad thing that the boy was trapped here under the very earth with her. Calia was sure she had been knocked out and was unsure how long she and the boy had been underground. It would be very hard to get help if no one knew that they were there this of course being on the grounds that there wasn’t a war or large scale event going on over there heads….

Calia tried to shift her weight so that she could get a better look at her surroundings. She managed to lean against the rock and dirt and think how best to use the powerful and seemingly unhelpful spells she had left.

With a great ammount of praying and lots of very unpolite language from the Priestess, Calia managed to get of an ammended Glyph of warding with the sonics changed to shout 'HELP STUCK UNDER GROUND BELOW THIS SPELL'. she even put it in common to give a better chance of it being understood by anyone passing...

The young woman knelt at the gates to the where the Inner City once stood, flowers in hand, ignoring as best she could the dust which still hung in the air beyond.

As she mourned her parents she just caught the faint sound above the wind of the blizzard and moved forward as far as she could.

Catching sight of the glyph, and hearing the desperate message she ran frantically to find the nearest guard that she could. Ten minutes later, a small party of Elves began to dig.

Nariel carefully placed the shard next to the others.

Three now, three returned...

Silently she knelt, and with others of her order gathered in the ancient grove lifted her prayers to the Mother of all.

And the skies cleared....

Rolling back from the shoreline the clouds retreated, almost as if in fear. The docks, the Path of Aros, the secret garden of the mother, were once more bathed in natural light.

As they watched, it seemed to those below that it might continue, that beyond hope all of Ferein may become bathed once more in a mystical light of endless day... but no.

Amid the prayers of gratitude, there were still those raised to the Mother for the return of the remaining shards.

For four yet remain....

The following note can be found driven into a tree near the shores of Ferein:

To those seeking the Shards of Ferein:

The shard has been taken by the Followers of Naruth. Send those that have defiled our temple, Rasputin, Jimmy, Vurbag and Brodie, just to name a few, to the Volcano in three days time if you wish to see this shard again. Any hostile actions against any of our faith will be meet with harsh consequences.

You have our terms,

The Naruthians

Near the shores of Ferein, a second note can be found:

To those seeking the Shards of Ferein:

To make it clear, we are willing to give up this shard and simply ask you not take any hostile action upon us. Please, come to the Volcano with those that have acted against us, in two days time and we will hand over this shard. Any that do so will be given the chance to make amends for their past actions, any that do not are naming themselves our enemy.

Nariel read the message through then turned to the druids surrounding her, concern showing on all their faces.

Her voice when it came was as quiet as ever, yet carried to all present, "So it is held by the servants of Naruth. It would seem indeed they seek to return it, that at least gives us hope. Can any of those named be found?"

She looked around at the assembled group, eyes as ever seeming to look beyond their outward appearance and ito their very souls.

At last she spoke again, "We must have it, go... seek them out. Seek others who have helped in the past. I do not doubt that this... Ilyana will seek to exact some price for the shard's return, it would be as well if as many attended as possible. Tell those who still wish to aid that they should come here, then we will discuss what must be done.

As the druids turned to depart she halted them once more

"But make it clear... they come here first, let none attempt to retrieve it alone, we do not seek a war, Ferein has troubles enough."

Nariel trudged through the snows of Ferein, carefully averting her eyes from the red glowing statues and the assault on her mind and senses of the spirits of the departed who flitted from tree to tree and along the walkways, some almost howling now in their discomfort and desparation. She shivered involuntarily and pulled her cloak tighter around herself, troubled not so much by the cold as the discomfort engendered by the sheer feeling of imbalance and nature gone awry.

She passed out onto the Path of Aros, relaxing as the air grew warmer, as the sun warmed her bare skin, as the discomfort faded.

She walked quickly into the grove and sat at beside a stream to gather her thoughts. The meeting had not gone well. The Council, as indeed it would seem were those who had travelled to Nethar'u, were divided. Some argued still that negotiation was the key, that Nu'men could be persuaded to give up the shard peacefully. Others were adamant that this had been tried, and negotiation had stalled...

Nu'men had demanded a price even to negotiate - a death - and it had been a price those present had been unwilling to pay.

Others had argued, as they had from the outset, that the only way of retrieving it was to do as they had with the others and take it by force.

She closed her eyes briefly and shuddered... by force... did they have no understanding of what such an assault would entail? To attempt to wrest the shard from the very heart of Menarok's temple?

Some among those present, some even among the Council, had known what that might entail.

And yet it would seem to be the only hope - a glimmer which was increased by the thought that there may be aliies to be found... among the towers of magery.

She thought once more of those who had gathered and her brow furrowed slightly. Would they do as she had asked? Would they bother?

She looked back towards the storm clouds above Ferein and sighed sadly, they had but a week. It was to be hoped that they would.

((Those who were present will know that they have a week to gather allies for an assault on Nethar'u - if that is the option they still wish to take (Nu'men's offer still stands). Those present will also know where these possible allies are to be found.

Anybody wishing to approach any of these, Ladriel, Naillamne, Ka'azim or Tel'Elena (an organisation which still exists despite the destruction of the tower) or even Malakai Fenghuul should PM myself as to any discussions they have held or appointments they might wish to make. I, or another member of the DM team depending on availability, will then do our utmost for this to happen IG. Remember - you have a week))

Nariel knelt in front of the statue in the Grove, head bowed in prayer. Silent, as she had been now for more than two days.

In front of her upon the ground lay the five shards so far recovered, the soft green glow casting an eerie light upon the nearby surroundings.

Around her, the daily life of the Grove continued as normal, but for the anxious glances cast in her direction whenever a druid passed about their business. As anxious as the glances which were often still cast towards the darkness and cloud which still lay above part of Ferein...

And if all failed, would remain.

Nariel looked up from her prayers and closed her eyes, her brow wrinkled in thought. "So... the shards, the mithril casing, and as much energy as we can gather...," she murmured softly to herself.

"Thank the Mother we were able to find Elmirie, she will be important, as will others."

Her eyes opened and she looked up curiously at the sound of approaching footsteps, then smiled gently at the approaching young druid.

"Lady Nariel," said the druid breathlessly, "Lady Elvalia is here and wishes to speak with you."

"Of course," said Nariel in her usual quiet voice, "she is always welcome."

She watched thoughtfully as the druid hurried off, whatever had passed between Elmirie and her daughter here in the Grove the night before was unknown, though all knew they had spoken for some hours. Elmirie was now resting, gathering her strength after her ordeal, more so now she was becoming aware of the part she would have to play.

The sound of almost imperceptible footsteps broke her train of thought and she looked up to see the tiny blonde figure approaching and smiled warmly, "Elvalia, you and the children are are well I trust?"

The other rested her hand briefly on her swollen stomach and smiled wryly, "Aala, all well, though I confess I am beginning to get to the stage where I wish they were well somewhere other than inside me."

Nariel laughed softly and nodded, "I am sure, what then can I do for you?"

Elvalia regarded her silently for a few moments, Nariel as aware as ever of the intensity in the green eyes, the carefully concealed thoughts and emotions that made her so difficult to read.

"You seek mithril I am told, is that true Nariel?" Said Elvalia.

"Aala, true enough..." answered Nariel, "without it the ritual will fail."

"I know where some is to be found," said Elvalia softly.

Nariel cursed inwardly, glancing down briefly at the bow which was as ever in Elvalia's left hand. "Of course she would know," she thought, "she has mined it herself."

Few in Ferein save Camthalion knew of the materials that had been used in the bow's making though it was apparent to any who looked at its trappings that mithril had been one of them. She smiled at Elvalia, slightly relieved. "Where then?" She asked.

Elvalia's eyes glazed over briefly as she spoke of the journey to find of it and it's location, clearly lost in the memories. As she finished Nariel nodded slowly and sighed softly, "Then there will be more fighting, I wonder at times whether there will ever be an end to it."

Though Elvalia remained silent the slight smile which appeared on her lips spoke volumes.

"So then... it must be done," said Nariel and outlined what she would need, "is it possible?"

If Elvalia was surprised to be asked about metalworking, she hid the emotion as carefully as any other but merely nodded, "Aala... I would say you will need 20 ingots, though mithril is among the most difficult to work. To be safe I would suggest they gather ore for at least double that. That way if an attempt fails they will have sufficient to try again. Also it is wise to plan for wastage in smelting the ore, the ingots are not always perfect and some will have to be discarded."

"To be absolutely sure I would say they need to mine at least 80 ore nuggets, we gathered almost as many when I made the bows and far less were used in its manufacture," she continued, "much depends also on the quality of the smith. Who is doing it? Daimon?"

"I do not believe so," answered Nariel, shaking her head, "a dwarf, by the name of Jubei I believe. Though he may have assistance... another by the name of Tolith."

"I know them both," nodded Elvalia, "I hope their skills we be enough. Is there anything else you need?"

Nariel thought for a moment, "Aala, we will need every person we can gather with power, arcane and divine. I will handle that and let those we require know. You will be there of course?"

Elvalia nodded, "Aala, I will be there. Be safe Nariel."

Nariel repeated the entreaty and watched the small figure walk off, shaking her head slightly. Unable to fight, perhaps... but whether she appreciated it or not she was no less important. "I should get word out as soon as possible," murmered Nariel and beckoned to a nearby druid.

((OOC - There will be a meeting tomorrow evening, Saturday 16th July, 10pm UK time at the Sacred Grove in Ferein. Nariel will then make clear what is required of players Sunday. Nariel looked around the silent Grove, glancing briefly towards the darkness which still hovered above Ferein. Many had come and were even now gathered within the grotto in prayer.

Those unable to attend, or not needed, had secured themselves within their homes, busying themsleves in whatever manner they saw fit, perhaps to take their minds off what the events of the day might bring.

Whether gathered in the Sacred grotto, or at home, one thought was uppermost in the minds of all... the Ritual.

Much still hung in the balance but today, if all went well, would be the day that may see an end to this. A day when Ferein might return to some semblance of normality.

All depended upon the small group of adventurers who had agreed to aid in the gathering of the required mithril. Without their success, all would fail.

But then... even should they succeed, would the ritual succeed?

She clenched her fists and turned to follow the others into the Grotto.

"Come what may, we will succeed," she thought.

"We must."
