Elemental Spell Slinger

After reading all the posts in the Magic thread I have suddenly found myself hankering to play a spell slinger type character.

I don't want to be a buff bot, in fact I don't want to use buffs at all. I want my character to act like a Magic Archer, slinging elemental and lesser used magic attacks into the forefront.

Normally I don't play a Sorcerer or Wizard or any mage class for that matter so I am a bit concerned?

Will I die every ten minutes and be incapable of doing anything?

If it has a possibility of success, what class? Sorcerer or Wizard?

What feats and skills should invest in?

Is their a magic school my character should be akin too?

Is their a valid RP reason for those? In all of the NPC Mages, is their a group like this? Like maybe in a siege they would be used as a sort of Arcane Artillery?

I don't intend to ever use any buffs.

Any information would be grand!

I began the character.

A half orc Sorcerer named Vornak Uk'Tahl.

The baby levels will be quite interesting I think.

Difficult yes, but it will pay off.

There's only two suggestions I can really give you.

First, a more practical one. Mages are easy to kill. They receive a pitiful maximum of 4 HP per level and get normally pitiful AC due to lack of armor. An unbuffed mage can be taken down by any sort of attack, not just melee, and avoiding being targetted and attacked becomes increasingly impossible the more you rise up in levels and enemies become far more diverse - no matter how many "meatshields" you put in front of you. Buffs are a mage's best friend, making him harder to hit, more resistant to damage and spells, etc. Even at high levels, an unbuffed mage is a laughingstock, while a buffed one is a monster. Buffs don't mean a mage can't throw a fair share of offensive spells - they mean he'd have more chances to survive something worse than a stiff breeze.

So basically answer your buff avoidance question the way I see it: yes, your mage will die quickly, terribly and often without buffs. Still, the choice is up to you.

Second, there's plenty of options to make a primarily offensive casters that I don't really feel like going on and on about. Try to think what kind of character would you like, and then try fit in what abilities she will have according to that. There's no point in going on about the mechanics when there's nothing to work them towards.

As far as an RP reason for offensive spellcasters to exist - that's for you to come up with, isn't it?

A mage can easily make lv7 without engaging in combat once.

Purpose in life: finding better ways of allowing players to kill themselves. Repeatedly.

True, but I think that's besides the point :p
