Mercy

The sun was setting as a young man, no older than 20, stood in front of the church in Midor. A slight breeze blew back his golden hair and his polished armor sparkled with the evening sun. His great sword was slung across his back, untouched by the hands of time. And, of course, a pride filled smile swept across his face.

He was the perfect example of a Midoran Paladin straight out of the Academy.

The boy kneeled down with one knee as his gaze fixated on the Righteous Swords at the entrance to the church. He respectfully nodded to each and bowed his head in prayer. “Midoran’s Will be done,” he spoke quietly but with great confidence as he repeated the word he had heard so many times.

He slammed his right hand against this left shoulder, took a final look upon the temple and left the Holy City. It was clear he was on a mission.

“Midoran’s will be done,” raged through his mind. The demon worshiper, Byron, was to be brought back to Midor – dead or alive. And so he set out to search. It lasted about a week, concentrating mainly on Brandibuck and Ladriel, but finally finding him in a tavern of Port Royale.

Bryon stood in front of the bar, looking over the selection of ales when the door of the Tavern opened before a bolt screamed across the Tavern into his foot. The bolt pierced his armour and drove deep into the floor.

The knight was feverous in his determination; he would bring the heretic back to be judged at any cost. He ran closer and jerked his crossbow towards the heathen. “Drop your sword and lay down on the ground!”

Byron respond with some words on the evil of Midor and the White Bishop, but the paladin’s will was much to strong to be swayed by a schismatic.

“Lower your weapon and lay down on the floor!” he raised his voice towards Byron.

Byron started to lower his weapon and the paladin moved forwards, dropping his crossbow. The Midoran thought Byron was surrendering but before he could act, his crossbow was knocked from his hands and a struggle ensued.

Each of the knights tried to overpower the other as Byron tried to convince him of his ignorance. But, again, the paladin would not listen. The Midoran knight eventually overpowered the heretic, drew his sword and pointed it down toward him. “Now, you will surrender!”

Byron knew his fate if he did as was ordered. He acted quickly and rolled to his sword.

“So be it,” the Midoran charged at Byron with his sword drawn. The battle was intense and the powerful clanks of steal on steal echoed throughout the Tavern.

The young paladin was no match for the experienced Byron and was about to fall. He struggled up all this strength and drew the power from Midoran to smite evil...but it failed. He looked at his blade in disbelief as a final blow knocked him to the ground.

Both men were bleeding badly from the extensive battle. Byron kneeled to the ground to attended to the paladin’s wounds.

“Do not return to Midor without the heretic,” the chilling voice of the White Bishop ran through his head. He had no choice. As Bryon leaned down to apply the bandages, the paladin grabbed for a dagger and drove it into Byron’s neck.

Bryon recoiled in pain and the paladin weakly rolled over to his sword. The two feebly locked themselves back into battle. It was only a few seconds before the paladin was knocked to the ground once again. He lay in a pool of his own blood, barely breathing but not moving.

Talion had seen the whole thing and took the paladin to the Port Royale temple. For some reason, the temple was locked and not allowing entry. Byron knew there was only one place to send the paladin. Midor.

Luckily, a priest was traveling to Midor on the early morning ship. He was able to escort the paladin back to back to Midor to be healed by the Will of Midoran.

Be merciful to all, even your enemies. Vengeance begets evil.

Fear. What do the truely faithful have to fear?

Brother Riley pondered this question while he remained bowed low on the floor. He waited in the cold silence of the room while the Preceptor composed himself.

"And the young Paladin is sure of what he saw?". The Preceptors voice held the quality of a cold and sharp blade.

What did he see really? The boy called himself by the name of Lorian, and wore the armour of black and gold. Worse yet, he called himself openly a Paladin of the Aristi and bested one of the finest students sent to return him to Midor. In hindsight, he should have sent others to follow the Paladin.

"He was clear in his description, and the details he remembered of the armour could not have been known by him Preceptor". Brother Riley continued to press himself into the floor.

The Preceptor stalked to the window, his fists clenched. For a while he stood, the only sound his breathing gradually returning to normal. He turned to the prostrate Riley.

"You have failed me. You have failed Him. You let him go and you made him a threat. You found him again and sent nothing but a warning to him."

The Preceptor paused a moment.

"You have made too many mistakes in this matter. My tolerance is at an end. It is fortunate for you I am a forgiving man."

"You know what you must do and the consequences if you fail. Now begone."

His words, quietly spoken, slammed into Riley. A cold trickle ran down his nose. Fear? Oh yes. Even the faithful can feel fear.

Riley bowed lower until his head touched the floor. "Of course Preceptor. I will see to it personally. There will be no mistake. Thank you Preceptor, thank you. Midoran's will be done"

Riley scrambled backwards out of the room.
