Lara

Lara stood on the edges of the group outside the Fourwinds Inn, playing her usual cautious role all the while laughing to herself. It was so easy to fool most others, especially humans. They were generally, as a race, stupid and gullible. If she had any doubts about that, all she had to do was remind herself of all the humans following after those priests in red. Righteous Swords, she heard someone call them. Followers of Midorian. Such foolishness.

And her own mother, taken in by an elf who cared nothing for her and left as soon as she was with child. Only to return and snatch the child away as soon as she was born or so her father told her. Of course he didn’t live long, killed by someone Lara assumed was another follower of that strange Elven god, Tarik, her father being one himself. Not that he ever spoke to her about his god or much of anything else. She knew her father didn’t love her, only kept her so her mother couldn’t have her, but it didn’t matter anyway. Lara didn’t care much for him either. Elves were arrogant and full of themselves. So she grew up in the woods spending as much time as far from her father as possible.

Now things were changing. It seemed something had entered the forests, something evil. She left the safety of her beloved woods to try to learn some answers and she had, though little of it made sense to her. Trying to keep the gnome, human and Halfling ignorant of her true self had been a strain and it had been difficult to remember everything they said. She would sort it out later. For now, she was enjoying herself too much.

Johe had offered to make her a guyver. Well, why not. She found she actually liked him and needed something to do. He was very entertaining, and he had not looked down on her. Of course she could read, but she had made him believe she couldn’t. It had not bothered him at all. He simply read the rules to her and asked if she accepted them or not.

She was going to have to be careful though especially around other half-elvens. She had almost given herself away. Still, she doubted the female would remember. Most were so wrapped up in themselves they thought little of others. Oh this was going to be so much fun.

Lara had stepped out of the infirmary where Gwar had supposedly carried her after she had fallen to the gypsies to suddenly realize where they were. Her heart seemed to stopped as the realization struck home – Midor. She knew this city of fools hated elves and felt little love for half-elves, and though she wasn’t sure how they felt about half-orcs she could pretty well guess. Once she had calmed, it had amused her to tell Gwar they were in a city of meanies (it was so hard not to laugh everytime she used that word). He had immediately pulled out his enormous axe ready to “crunch” them. That would have been an interesting sight to witness though neither of them would have survived, so she hastily reassured him they needed to leave instead.

Lara initially found it highly entertaining and amusing to try to communicate with this seemingly dull-witted half-orc. Normally, she would not have bothered even talking to this great hulking creature, but when she learned he was ZigZig’s older brother, Lara jumped at the chance. Who knew how useful he could be if she were to take Johe up on his offer to become a guyver. Now, however, as they traveled together, Lara was feeling a bit ashamed of herself. He was surprisingly gentle, and really seemed to care what happened to her. She found she liked him, and now doubted his slow wit. Something in his eyes led her to believe there was more intelligence behind them then she would find in most elves or humans. It pained her to keep up the lie with him, but she had little choice at this point. His common was not the easiest to understand, but she had little trouble making out what he said. The hard part, the part that was beginning to take a toll on her, was hiding the fact that she understood him.

She was grateful to have met Taer. He was not arrogant like most elves and spoke elven enough to talk to her giving her a break from having to invent, to be careful, watchful. She had to admit he had a certain boyish charm one rarely found in males, but that mattered little. It just added to the pleasure of talking with him. She laughed a bit. He had told her what had happened outside the Four Winds, but not all of it. She knew because she had understood every word Taer and the human male had spoken. The man had all but accused Taer of murder. Later he had claimed to her that he had killed an undead, so either Taer was lying or the man was a fool. It would be interesting to learn the truth. Was Taer more than he seemed? Well, everyone had secrets, some more than others. She was also very curious about his heritage. He claimed to have orc blood mixing with the elven but he wouldn’t elaborate on it. Perhaps she could get the story from him later.

And still the Bloodwood cried out. She was discovering more and more places harboring feelings of unease or strange power – the circle of stones in the woods near the Four Winds, the small cave where an unhealthy mist seemed to rise from the very bowels of the earth, a wood she had not known before deceptively peaceful but hiding a dark secret. And the gods slept, if they even existed at all. More useful for those drunk on power wanting to control others then in aiding the land. Oh yes, Lara was enjoying herself immensely. It would be interesting to see who came out the stronger, and she was determined to be right there with them. But how to make contact with whatever haunted the woods? She would have to think on that one.

A raven perched on the tree above them watching. One call and it was gone as swiftly as it had come. Lara looked at the three humans standing with her. They had noticed the raven but seemed to dismiss it out of hand. How foolish humans were. Why the raven and why to a group such as these. Lara did like Mikaylin, she at least seemed to have some intelligence, but she didn’t think much of the other two. Still they would not know that, and perhaps the raven was an ill omen for them. That would be entertaining to watch.

She and Mikaylin had tried to search for the Raven past the Plains to the Forest Trail. The others following though she doubted they cared one way or the other. Scanning the trees, knowing she would see the bird only if it wanted her to, she listened to the three talk of Taer. Finally, she was learning part of what happened. She wished she had been paying more attention, but it wasn’t until she heard his name that she started to. She listened intently at that point though to watch her, they would never know she understood a word they had said. She was getting good at pretending to be confused, that it was becoming almost second nature to her. What she learned was fascinating. She had to think of a way to bring it up to Taer the next time she saw him. It could prove interesting.

Her thoughts turned to Midor. She was going to have to try it soon. It was just too tempting, but that she would keep to herself. She laughed thinking about it.

For an instant she wondered where Gwar was and if he was safe.

The arrogance of elves, the intolerance of humans, the silliness of halflings….what race was without flaw? She thought perhaps she shouldn’t have followed the others although she had been intrigued by the winged half-orc. Lara was glad now she did. She pretended to sit through their silly game of truth and dare without knowledge of what was happening. It was highly amusing to see the fickleness, vanity and arrogance of their hostess though Lara had little doubt the woman could be a very dangerous enemy. The ones in attendance offered just as much entertainment…from the empty-headed giggling of the females to the emotionless tone of the wizard. Lady Absinthe had been a surprise but she had proved just as arrogant and self-righteous as all Midorians.

The human, Nidarren, had been a fool to show his obvious discomfort in front of the high priestess. He would have been better to play along, but his own arrogance stood in his way. She wondered briefly if he would suffer for it, then dismissed the thought as unimportant. She found him amusing and highly entertaining to see the way he dismissed because he believed she could not understand.

The trip to the heart of the fire goddess, at least that is what Lara assumed knowing so little of them, had proved valuable after all. A war was brewing between her and her sister, the queen of ice. Well, whoever was foolish enough to get in between that deserved whatever happened to them. She grew thoughtful a moment. Perhaps though, there could be an advantage in taking sides. She would have to watch and wait.

Lara had stared down fascinated yet horrified at the gnome. She had never seen so much blood, the female’s wounds open and raw, soaking the ground red. A group standing around the gnome. Then the green haired male had approached her speaking elven asking her for help; to go to the sacred grove and fetch the druid. Later, Lara learned his name was Norran. The night seemed to last forever as she waited for the boat and then her frustration at the druid’s refusal to come, giving her instructions as to how to help the gnome instead. Lara wondered if she would return only to find the gnome – Miramil, Norran had told her - dead. The group around Miramil had increased. Catching her breath from the haste she had made, she imparted the instructions to Norran – sacred ground, powerful cleric.

And then Lara watched, frustrated, angry, yet amused as they argued where to take the gnome. She almost choked when the human suggested Midor, not that she let on she could understand them. As if Midorian cared what happened to a gnome. Finally, Norran got them moving and the strong male she had met in Johe’s shop picked the gnome up and finally they were off to the Tears. A Halfling had managed to heal Miramil and Lara sat watching her sleep singing a soft Elven lullaby to her though she wasn’t sure why she did it. And finally she listened to their talk remaining silent letting them beleive her ignorant of their words if they cared at all.

Then Loki showed up. She wouldn’t think about him now. Not after what happened, how she had a made a fool of herself. She closed her heart and her thoughts turned to the banquet and the words of the High Priestess. Well that was one fight she would try her best to stay out of. How could she side, though, with a goddess who made friends of Righteous Swords? Misunderstood!? Lara sniffed disdainfully. If there was one thing her father was right about they should all die, be hunted. And the ramblings of the female as they played that silly game. Perhaps they weren’t ramblings after all. But how did one….she shook her head. She didn’t care really. She was a nobody, they would leave her alone.

She sighed. A nobody, alone, homeless now. Power, wealth and if one could not get respect, then fear. Still she wondered how? Briefly, her thoughts turned to Loki but she suppressed them as quickly as they came. Yet he alone knew her secret. She would have to tread carefully.
