Calling all elves, half-elves and possibly others Posted: 30 Nov 2004 05:33 AM |
This is a request for information folks.
I am in the process of starting an elven history for Vives wich will also incorporate character bios, customs traditions etc.
In order to do this it means collating a hell of a lot of information, including what your character knows.
What have they been told by Aros/Elbereth that they can or cannot do?
What conversations have they had with the above that they might have passed on?
What have they been told about the past?
What do they know about the past?
What do they know, or have they been told about any of the existing institutions/places within the elven tradition... Ferein, Tel 'Elena, etc
Do they have books/scrolls/anything containing information on the past etc
**Please be aware of the following**
Do not post information which as far as your char is concerned would be OOC, do NOT post information they have been told to keep secret, or as a character they would not reveal to others. I will be posting here myself and you can be sure there is information Elvalia wouldn't mention.
Do not post information relating to your character's history which in your opinion wouldn't be generally known. If it is something they would keep to themselves, or are keeping to themselves, don't put it here.
The idea is to create a history, tradition and collection of customs that all elves within Vives would be aware of. Some will be newly created but hopefully form part of the framework.
Thanks :) |

A few questions....
First, do you think the Elves would be aware, or care, of Daimon, the non Ferein Master smith and swordsman from the human lands (adopted, parents slain at young age, public knowledge)
and second... Aslyrai IC roleplays knowing the events of the hundred years war, and certain details of history I've come to believe he would have learned from his life in study in the temple gardens, I want to know if any of the DM's think that he shouldn't know these things.
and third, would you like me to point you to a few threads about the 100 years war, and the lost ones, and so on? |

What your char(s) know that they would be willing to tell or that would be generally known, I'm aware that my chars are aware of things like this that they might not necessarily have passed on for one reason or another.
If for instance it's something Daimon wouldn't tell another - don't reveal it, if it's general knowledge such as Aslyrai has, this doesn't mean everybody knows.
Just post what you think suitable and I'll sort it out at a later date - if there is stuff elsewhere by all means point me that way |

Re: Calling all elves, half-elves and possibly others Posted: 30 Nov 2004 09:01 AM |
Right to give an idea of what I'm looking for and to get the ball rolling...
Elvalia Mellebin
Blonde, with piercing eyes of the deepest green, short and slightly built but the epitome of grace and agility.
Born between 110 and 120 years ago - even she is uncertain as to her exact age - in a clearing some distance from Ferein but within the boundaries of what would then have been regarded as the elven realm.
Brought up for the first ten years of her life by the elven ranger Arod Mellebin and his wife Elmerie, a druid.
Orphaned in a dispute between Arod and nearby human settlers, Elvalia was led away to safety by Aros, for reasons she is to this day not completely sure of, though in her mind she has a good idea.
For the span of years between then and her arrival in Vives she grew up alone in the nearby forest to which Aros had led her, leading a semi-wild existence but, at the same time gaining close ties to nature and the wild which still serve her well and mean that to this day in some ways she is only truly happy in similar surroundings and has led to her leading a solitary existence which sets her apart from her peers.
Eventually, her solitary existence became too much for her and she decided to return to the only home she had known, in the intervening years humans had become more numerous and she overheard a conversation which led her onto a quest for revenge and involved the killing of a number of humans in cold blood, hunting them down like animals. Aros called a halt to this and set her on a path which would initially involve her finding Arod's bow and the point where she is now.
She has a sister, a twin, Bronwyn Evenstar. Her existence was unknown until after Elvalia had been in Vives for a little while when they encountered each other by chance. Aros himself confirmed their relationship but when asked why they had been separated would only say that the reasons would become clear in time. Elvalia is fiercely devoted to her.
Fanatically loyal to Aros, who she rightly sees as having saved her life, she will espouse his views to the exclusion of all else, even friendship. Something which has brought her into conflict with many.
Crafter of bows par excellence, it is rumoured that her skills may even surpass those of the famed bowmaker Neek. She is also as is known to be at least proficient in many other crafts and will readily impart advice on materials and there whereabouts if known to her.
Bluntly spoken, often to the point of rudeness, she is clearly proud of her elven heritage and will defend it no matter the consequences. Uncomfortable in social settings, unless among friends she trusts, Elvalia is extremely wary and introverted, preferring often to remain silent rather than join a conversation.
She has a rabid hatred of trolls, something which has more than once put her life in danger, detests Tarik and his followers, or 'creatures' as she calls them and dislikes just as vehemently anything to do with the Atalan, 'abominations', though why she feels this way about them is known to none but herself.
Carries the Bow of Aros, one of only two which were made by her with the aid of the God himself, indeed Aros carries its twin. A fearsome weapon, especially in her hands, it is rumoured that there is some connection between the two though how this is manifested is known to none but the two bearers, although some are aware there may be more to the relationship.
Named as Chosen of Aros by him after the creation of the Bow, Elvalia has become if anything even more fanatical in her defence of her people, their home, and their traditions.
Has been seen lately in the company of Thorfin Ginfalin, an elf, though the true nature of the relationship is known to only a few.
Is most often to be found among the woods near Ferein, particularly Latonei, though she often travels to Buckshire and its surroundings in search of her sister. Lately also she has spent more time at her home, the exact location of which is known to but a few.
Knowledge ((remember this is only what she would be willing to impart to others))
Elves may not willingly enter any place known to contain undead nor should they seek close contact with them. In Elvalia's case she has been spefically forbidden to do so by Aros himself. In general it is to avoid the chance of an elf becoming undead, for which reason elves are cremated when their existence comes to an end, rather than buried.
Elves killed as part of the Hunt are dead, their existence is ended and not even Aros is able to bring them back.
Aros laments the loss of the 'old ways' when elves were part of the very nature of Vives and untainted by interaction with other races.
Ferein is the third known home of the elves in Vives, the first being near to Icy Vale, the second a city known as Minyaren, exact whereabouts unknown, though it is believed to lie somewhere in the Fenghuul region.
Elves are more closely linked to the nature and existence of Vives than other races (again from Aros)
Marriage between elves and other races, indeed even relationships, is frowned upon, particularly by Aros.
Part of the reason for this is a dislike of other races, but is also due to the fact that since elves live for such a long span of years, their existence after the partner is no more will be one of pain and sorrow.
Elves marry once... and once only. It is permanent and for life.
Elves typically court for at least a year and a day, partly at least to be sure that the partner they have chosen is right for them, given the above. In some cases indeed, the courtship may last for even longer.
This is just some, I'll post more later as it comes to mind, but it should be enough to give a general idea of what is being sought |

Re: Calling all elves, half-elves and possibly others Posted: 30 Nov 2004 06:34 PM |
Lianneth Mei'ren Lianneth Mei'ren is a elven woman of average height, with a slender, almost fragile build. Her hair is dark brown, falling past her shoulders. She has deep green eyes, the colour of woodland in the height of summer.
She is 124 years old and was brought up by her father, Elvariand Mei'ren, in his tower situated in a remote part of Ferein. Her mother died shortly after Lianneth was born; all she knows of the woman is her name, Cithandriel, and the fact that she loved to grow flowers. She had little contact with anyone other than her father, cousin and occasionally her father's old friends from his adventuring days.
Stolen glances from her father's old journals, heroic tales from her bardic cousin and the visits from old adventuring companions fueled in Lianneth the desire to go out and make her own adventures in the world. Life outside of the tower was not what she had expected; a few short days after stepping foot in the outside world she found herself a member of a rescue party that ventured into Hell; an intermediate realm between Vives and Nethar'u. Since then, her life has had its ups and downs, but there is little she would change about it.
Lianneth followed in her father's steps and became both a wizard and a follower of Theus. There are some who deride her decision not to take one of the elven gods as her patron but she appears to pay them little heed. In the past, she was known to pay tribute to both Aros and Elbereth, but in recent times only Elbereth has recieved her thanks.
When not treading the paths of Vives in search of excitement with her friends, Lianneth enjoys practicing the art of alchemy and more recently, enchanting and jewellry crafting. She rarely asks for payment for her creations; they are mostly doled out to her friends, though if she is offered compensation she does not refuse it.
She has little patience for anyone who believes they are superior to others due to their race, religion or background. Few of Lianneth's friends are elves and she seems quite content in this. In the past, she was known to have been romantically involved with Jonny Cocteau, a human from Port Royale.
Lianneth is a member of the secretive mage tower located in Ferein, Tel'Elena. On more than one occasion she has taken an earbashing over their acceptance policy and now simply refuses to respond if drawn into such a discussion.
Knowledge Tel'Elena is a mage tower that accepts only those with elven blood. Not only that, but the mage must also meet a certain level of skill in the arcane arts before membership is granted.
((That's all for her knowledge; Aros and Elbereth don't chat to Lianneth much. :D )) |

Since this is also about building up a framework in terms of elven customs and traditions, perhaps I ought to make clear that it doesn't have to be something that has ben found out IG.
If you have something you think would fit and work within Vives then by all means suggest it |

but also note things will need DMs approval to get IG. (not being mean, just rational)
I'd like to write about things that arent known right now - can you please send me all the questions you have about specific things (make it fairy tales about something, tradition etc) so I could add them while I write.
another thing - I dont want to step any toes, so can you please send me the 'hidden'/secret info about your chars? everything that is IG I mean - like, things your chars were told by the gods, or NPCs or CPCs etc etc
- Of course I mean - do that by PMs on the site ;)
Kudos to the initiative - I'll try to spend as much time as I can to help from 'our' side ;)

Ana'Estasia Lilladweilen
A slender "young" elven woman with bright red hair, the colour of the brightest red leaves of fall. She stands about average height for elves and has a trim build. She is very agile and lithe, like a freshly cut twig, not apt for load bearing, but can bend in nearly any direction. Her eyes are a bright and shiny green and have a look of inquisitiveness about them, though with a gleam of knowledge as well.
She is 125 years old, and a few people know about her troubled (but not extremely troubled) past. She grew up mostly as a loner, as her parents traveled often and would not take her along with. At a young age of 33 her parents were killed at sea by a storm. Ana didn't really mourn their deaths as she felt she barely knew them. However, due to having no caretakers she was forced to survive on her own. This in turn led to her path down the way of the rogue. She learned skills to allow her entry to places that would normally be off limits, as well as how to sneak around once inside.
Ultimately she decided that she could no longer live in Ferein, that she had to travel elsewhere and find new adventure. She decided to pursue a childhood dream to find a dragon, and hear it's tales. Hear of adventure, and heros coming to face the mighty dragon, and of how it has survived through the centuries.
This dream placed her near Port Royale where she began to meet people, people that didn't know what she was. In particular Kriyana Appleberry befriended her and showed her around. For once in her life Ana actually felt accepted and so she attatched herself to those around her. She became much more social and friendly, which has led her to where she is now.
She has recently recovered from a grievous wound given to her by the priesthood of Midoran. She was captured during a simple thievery at the academy of Paladins which led to them cutting off her hands and binding her wrists with magic to prevent magical regeneration. Through much toil and pain she was able to gather the reagents and powerful people of land to restore her hands to her.
Even more recently she married the human rogue Jand Fennen. She realises that this was perhaps a hard move for some to understand, but she loves him and seems willing to accept the fate that he will die "shortly" relative to her, and she will then endure a time of mourning and pain.
Ana loosely practices religion, following mainly the Mother Elbereth but offers praise to Aros once in a while as well. Not having the pleasure of speaking to the gods directly she is still somewhat skeptical as to their intents.
Knowledge
Ana really doesn't have much in the way of elven lore, or words of the gods. She grew up somewhat sheltered and thus did not study the texts, hear the tales, or learn many of the songs of her kind.
Edit:
The mother just recently spoke with Ana and revealed to her that there are in fact vampires that see their curse as exactly that, a curse, and they wish to be freed from it. A vampire named Vandrane is one such vampire and has helped her in the defense of the Tears from another Vampire named Vanlorian. The mother also told Ana that trust is essential to life much like the balance. |

Priestess Calia Qu'estrael Posted: 03 Dec 2004 02:51 PM |
Calia is a brown haired and eyed slender elf. She is about 139 years old and isn’t married. She can be found most of the time running around Port Royal being a midwife to all elven women that live in the city and she uses the temple for healing and helping wandering travellers.
Calia is an elven priestess, she was one of the biggest outspoken elven people for integration with other races more so the humans then any other. This has all changed as of the past few months. Calia only raises people with elven blood no matter how little. She speaks elven more then ever and has started teaching elven to people with elven blood that haven’t grown up in Ferein.
Calia is polite to most people and hates people being rude no matter why. She talks openly of a meeting with a Solar angel called Carillian the Wild, a leader and great warrior of the Celestials. He was sent to talk to Calia about her tasks ahead.
She was informed that elven shouldn't seek out the undead in regards to fighting it. Although if she feels it necessary to fight them she has special permission from Lord Aros to conduct such expeditions. She has been asked to talk all other elven from going near such evil and vile darkness unless they are with her or others of the clergy.
Calia talks of how she was told by Carillian the Wild that the Elven people are closer to celestials then and of the other mortal races. With their long lives and being chosen by Aros the elven people are more favoured the any other race.
Calia used to be a sister of the tower of Laderiel and until its leader betrayed her she was very proud to be one. This is not the case any more and doesn’t speak of it any further.
*Anyone going near Calia is hit with a wave of good energy any good characters feel warmed and comforted by this. Any evil character feel unnerved by the strength of some great good near artefact that Calia must possess* |

Re: Calling all elves, half-elves and possibly others Posted: 03 Dec 2004 05:17 PM |
Shaz'jen Direth
Is Shaz'jen an elf?
Well, mostly. Most people also know what the bit that isn't 'mostly elven' pertains to as well.
Shaz'jen isn't exactly sure how old he is. His usual response to this is that he is at least two hundred and thirty nine because he has managed to account for that many years. He figures that that's probably an underestimate and he could be a lot older than even he realises. He isn't entirely sure of the circumstances of his birth but has admitted to a few that it wasn't exactly a union of love. What he does know is that as a baby he was adopted by the Paladins of Midoran and was raised in their Order.
During a vicious fight with a created demon, as the beast was slain and dragged down to Nethar'u Shaz'jen was dragged with it. For at least seven decades he was a slave of demons; a cold and decidedly effective assassin. Those days are long gone by, and his frail, emaciated figure certainly doesn't support his history - but Shaz'jen is still quite capable of giving a few nasty shocks to people if he can get the drop on them.
As a shadowdancer, Shaz'jen is almost peerless. Very little - and certainly few mortal eyes - can break through Shaz'jen's almost supernatural skill at hiding. To say that he seems to take delight in suddenly popping up in the middle of conversations would be pretty understates. One really never knows where he is going to show up next.
Since his escape one of Shaz'jen's primary motives would appear to thwart the goals of Nethar'u and the demons there. He certainly seems to show up the most wherever Nethar'u and demons are involved. His other goals he keeps quite close to himself.
Despite the fact that Shaz'jen is most definitely un-elven like, he does harbour a great interest in the elven society. He is a known and welcome resident of Ferein, partiularly after the Malagard incident, and in return for their hospitality Shaz'jen has promised (not necessarily out loud ) to help the elves recover their lost lore and knowledge. As an avid scholar himself, and with a long lifespan, endless patience and quick brain, Shaz'jen should be qute a valuable asset in that. He has currently set up home in some old ruins in Ferein and hopes to uncover any secrets they may have.
Perhaps only one thing about Shaz'jen gets on his fellow elves' nerves - and that is, if the Athar could exist on Vives, then Shaz'jen would be one of them. He cares nothing about the gods, is happy to say so and can get downright blasphemous about it. He thinks nothing of poking insults at anyone he catches praying, even over the fallen body of a friend, or shaking his head as the mortals yet again thank the gods for letting them do something that the mortal did under their own stead. In fact, a few comrades have wondered aloud to him why he hasn't been struck down by lightning yet. Shaz'jen declines to comment on that.
Knowledge
Shaz'jen's knowledge of Ferein is mostly limited to his own connection of it. He claims descendence from an ancient and beloved champion of Aros, Valia, and so bears a little knowledge of the holy warriors that righteously defend their home.
Something Shaz'jen has yet to reveal to anyone is the exact depth and depravity an infamous family of half-fiend elves have wreaked on the world. Probably because no one has asked.
Apart from these, Shaz'jen's knowledge of the elven culture is so woefully limited that he's quite determined to do something about it. |

Re: Calling all elves, half-elves and possibly others Posted: 16 Dec 2004 11:32 AM |
Here's some information on elven childhood.
Childhood The first fifty years of an elf's life is a time of play and exploration, carried out under the eye of the adults of the community they are born into. Elves prefer direct experience over second-hand learning, but there are only some things that can be learnt this way. Children are taught to look for potential dangers before exploring, to recite the tales of Aros and Elbereth, and to learn how to craft. Children learn to recognise their parents, but are raised by the community as a whole. Already in search of their own individuality, they are allowed to form bonds with whichever adults they feel most attuned to.
Adolesence The next fifty years is the most important in shaping who the elf will become. It is called 'The Time of Discovery'. The young elves are expected to begin to take up duties in support of their community and must master the basics of combat, particularly the long sword and bow. They learn how to keep watch, despite the fact they are easily distracted at this age. An adolescent elf helps to hunt, farm and forage. The young elf must also learn how to make beautiful and useful things.
During this time the elf also experiments with what pleases them and many take up a musical instrument of some kind.
The most important event of this times is the Awakening. It is a moment of epiphany, when the elf can physically sense the touch of the divine in the mortal world. An elf never speaks of this moment; at most it is very vaguely described to the closest love or children in their life. It is different for every individual, but usually profoundly subtle. An elf may find the divine in the veins of a crumbling leaf, or in the knowledge of the imminent power in the air before a storm.
The Awakening usually occurs around the hundrenth year, though some experience it as young as seventy-five. Such a young Awakening is often a sign that the elf will become great; a mighty warrior, powerful cleric or leader of their time. A rare few never taste it, even after counselling from a cleric. These unfortunate individuals often leave their community, tormented by the kind pity of their fellows and impose a self-exile, becoming wanderers known as the Unawakened.
The Awakening marks the beginning of an elf's adult life. They declare themselves as adults to their community and take a new name to reflect this new part of their life. Many family members and neighbours are slow to adopt this new name, and continue to call the elf by her childhood name, using it as a term of endearment. Some elves accept this with a smile; others find it offensive. |

Elrith Mellin
130 years old, silver haired with eyes of an icy blue.
Background
Originally a native of Ferein, brought up by relatives after the death of her parents in a raid. Largely ignored by those relatives as an inconvenience and an extra mouth to feed, found herself spending a great deal of time alone, developing an interest in other people’s affairs and becoming adept at stealth and other less savoury arts such as lock picking and traps. Even so, though as she saw it abandoned by both her family and showing little interest in religion, Elrith remained good of nature, becoming a member of the Fire Knives.
Embarked on an ‘expedition ‘ with Ana'Estasia Lilladweilen to relieve the Midoran Academy of some of it’s belongings, in the process of which she unwittingly set off a trap resulting in her severe injury and the death of Ana. Coming to in the Midoran Infirmary (though how she arrived there remains a mystery to this day) she set about trying to find aid for Ana, to no avail.
Turned on by those who knew her as a result of Ana’s subsequent punishment, for which she was blamed, Elrith became even more solitary embarking on a path which she hoped would one day enable her to gain revenge on the Midorans – particularly paladins – who she saw as largely responsible, and for whom she retains a lasting hatred.
Sinking ever deeper into the darkness of her nature, Elrith committed a crime which affected the whole of Vives and resulted in a fundamental change to her very being, resulting in her becoming a creature of darkness and shadow.
Has few friends, and no particular desire to have any, though she is fiercely loyal to Macha Sparrowsong, who befriended her shortly after the incident at the Academy and who led her to the worship of Tarik, to whom she is devoted and has embarked on a Hunt, particularly of those humans she despises. Has also been seen on many occasions in company with the half-orc Mandrake, enjoying a curious relationship almost akin to friendship, all the more curious given her distaste for anything non-elven.
Knowledge
What Elrith knows apart from the above is known to few, and extremely unlikely to be revealed given that she indulges in conversation with so few |
