*growing concern around Brandibuck* Posted: 30 Mar 2005 11:49 AM |
Disquieting tales are beginning to be told in and around Brandibuck. Tales of mysterious disappearances, halflings and gnomes in outlying areas have been going missing, only a few here and there, but enough to eventually warrant notice...
Those missing are those least likely to be missed. Hermits, traders passing through, reclusive types...the only thing they all share in common is that they are all "right-sized".
((this rumour can be picked up by anyone who spends a significant amount of time in Brandibuck over the next week or two, and who is known and trusted by the locals.)) |

Winky has begun asking regular patrons to his tavern in Brandibuck if they have seen Tabitha, a pleasant young halfling lass that started working evenings as a barmaid about a month or so ago. A few nights ago, she finished work and left the tavern seemingly perfectly happy, but never made it home.
She lives with her parents on the other side of Swiftfoot halls, and they are becoming frantic with worry. They have offered a reward of 100 gold for information pertaining to her whereabouts.
None of the guards on patrol on the night in question heard or saw anything suspicious. There were no incursions from the Bloodwood, everything was peaceful.
The usually jovial nature of the people of Brandibuck seems a little less evident of late to those passing through, and strangers are being eyed somewhat warily.
((feel free to PM me any queries / lines of investigation undertaken))

The atmosphere in Brandibuck and all its environs has become positively hostile to outsiders. Muttered curses at tall folk wandering through, and resentful glares become more the norm than the exception. Few have a pleasant word to say to strangers, though those who take the time to break through the hostility can discover that the right sized of Brandibuck feel threatened and alone, without aid from any quarter and at a loss as to what to do to protect their kin.
Those right sized, or truly trusted in the town, that ask around can find that more than twenty halflings have been abducted over the last month or so. Disappearing without a trace. Only halflings, the gnome populace of Brandibuck has not suffered a single loss.
The presence of the guards throughout the area has more than doubled, and black curtains hang in many windows. |

Solitaire hurried into Ka'azim tower breathless. Shamn shuffled over to her looking concerned.
"What is it Solitaire?" He asked her
She panted a few times before replying "Malakai" she almost spat "I have news that he has taken Johe, and that he is likley responsible for the other missing folk of Brandibuck .... I must see him and find out if this is true"
Shamn frowned deeply "he will not see you if you ask to see him for those reasons" he mused aloud
"I know that" she smiled a little regaining her composure "I told Blanche that I would send him word to speak of some matter of the arcane.... perhaps some details of my contingency translocation spell will be enough to intrigue him into a meeting. I hope this will be enough of an excuse to bring Blanche and some others to him. If I prepare a message, will you send it to him by magical means?"
"Of course Solitaire, I shall arrange for it immediately" Shamn agreed
"Thank ye kindly Shamn" she replied and hurried off to prepare the message ... |

((For those who dont want to read all the verbage, Saturday May 14th, UK time 8pm, Malakai will be available and expecting...guests. All levels are welcome. Word should swiftly spread IC, though will leave that to players to sort. This should be a primarily rp based event, though the lands that are travelled through low level characters will need to be accompanied for.))
Malakai dismissed the annoying prancing pixie with a wave of his hand. Why couldnt Kaazim use more sensible messengers. Pesky little things had a decided larcenous bent, and the last thing he wanted right now was some irritating familiar poking its nose in where it wasnt wanted. But it was considered bad form to slay the familiar of another mage...Malakai still deemed himself a member of Naillamne even if he had not walked its halls in centuries. And as such, was still bound by the rules and traditions that governed the towers of magery...well, most of the time anyway.
So with an irritated sigh he allowed the pixie to fly back to its home, after accepting the scroll it had delivered. As the pixie flew away, Malakai considered the fact that the only protection his tower held against winged assault was the numerous wards. Sufficient, certainly, but somehow less satisfying than having his children playing as they did now upon the grounds all around his tower; the young quicklings with their incessant chattering and beseeching requests for him to come play; and then the newer, yet somehow slightly older in nature, giantlings, such sweet natured fellows those, and so much less susceptible to harm than his other children.
Flying quicklings...flightlings...now there was a thought! Suddenly excited, he distractedly broke the seal upon the scroll after a cursory glance confirmed no trap was bound within the wax. A swift perusal of its contents, and a smile crossed his face. So his message had gotten out at last, his messenger had apparently done some of what was asked of him, even if more slowly than had been hoped for.
An interesting approach, though, showing a little more tact and discretion than he had come to expect from the majority of young fools that he had had to deal with during the opening of Netharu. Spell research indeed, what little he could remember of his one meeting with young Solitaire made him feel that she was too timid to ever seek him out for such a reason. Though she was not a mageling without promise, she reminded him of Alianda a little, when she was younger...before Nu'men.
With a wry smile as he thought of Nu'men and his "courting" of Alianda, Malakai swiftly penned a response.
*written in a flowing hand, on the finest parchment*
~My dearest Lady Solitaire,
I would be delighted to meet with you, of course. And discuss any matters that may be weighing upon your mind. I will expect you as dusk falls upon sixth-day. And worry not, my children will behave themselves, I assure you. Please feel free to bring any guests you so desire, I know the lands are seldom safe to walk alone in these troubled times. Just please, ensure they know a little of courtesy, and have the manners to leave their weapons sheathed, and their spells uncast when they enter my home.
Malakai Fenghuul~
With a muttered incantation Malakai caused the scroll to vanish and re-appear upon Solitaire's writing desk. And then, that distraction put aside, he turned his thoughts once more to more important matters, a frown of deep thought creasing his brow, flying quicklings..... |

Whilst an air of suspicion and unease still permeates the atmosphere throughout Brandibuck and its surrounding environs, there is also a faint sense of relief, an unspoken thought that maybe whatever plight afflicted the vale has finally ended. The abductions seem to have ceased, the last person known to have been taken was a halfling who styled himself a "guyver", named Johe.
With something of a reputation as a hero, the halflings of Brandibuck have even speculated that whoever took Johe bit off more than they could manage, and that is why the kidnappings have stopped. Of course, no one wants to mention the fact that Johe himself has not been seen since he was taken.
The last week or more has passed quietly, with no signs of further missing halflings. A total approaching fifty have gone missing over the last couple of months, and it will take a long while for the wounds to fully heal for this peaceful community, if indeed it is truly at an end... |

Solitaire receives the note from Malakai and is glad that Malakai has accepted her request of a meeting. It matters little whether he saw through her weak excuse to meet him, the fact that he will meet her and allow them safe passage to him was enough.
She sets off to find people around Vives interested in Johe and the other halflings being missing to see if they will come with her to the appointment with Malakai.
