There is little love lost between Port Royal and Midor, this much is known to all. There has always been little skirmishes over resources and insults between forces loyal to each side over the years. Twelve years ago tensions were running high near the border once more. The Earl of Trevain had grievously insulted Baroness Hawkfurst by cordially asking whether her stablehands were responsible for her offspring since they, unlike their father nor mother, had bright red hair. As things usually are with nobility this insult would have to be properly avenged and the commoners on both sides would pay the bill so to speak. A few border raids were the result, a few of the more remote farmsteads were burned to the ground as roving bands of noble knights were showing their valor. At this point a most unfortunate happenstance took place, two such parties met near the border, both on their way to the opposite side. After a few insults were thrown a particularly hotheaded knight decided that this would end in battle, so a pitched battle ensued. After the bloody battle was over, the only son of Earl of Trevain lay dead on the field. No priest was around to resurrect the dead so this was indeed final death. This of course escalated the incident and at this point Port Royal decided to send an attachment of troops to calm things down, not to be outdone, Midor sent a sizable one as well. The Royalian trroop was augmented by a sizable force of mercenaries, most of them from the mercenary group grey wolves.
The two forces met near the border at Pelor's Field, to discuss the current situation. At the meeting one of the Midorian generals was poisoned and this brought the meeting to a swift end and the forces braced for battle. So with the clear sound of a trumpet the Midorian heavy cavalry bored down on the Royalian pikemen, the battle was fierce and heavy casualties were inflicted on both sides. As the sun set and the two forces retreated to their camps for the night , it became obvious to the Royalian general Decksus that the Midorian's had gained the upper hand and come morning the Port Roayle troops would be decimated. Withdrawal seemed out of the question since most of the horses had perished during the day. So a cunning plan was needed. They needed to buy time for the troops to withdraw, and Decksus decided that who better to buy that time than the mercenaries. The mercenaries had lost during the day's battle most of their leaders, so new leadership was required, preferably somebody loyal to Royale. A young lieutenant by the name Cale Laras saw his big chance of proving his worth at this. Bright eyed and fiercely loyal he seemed the ideal candidate. He had managed to befriend a few of the mercenaries as well, acting as a liaision between regular troops and the mercenaries. Also since he had no great military knowledge nor valuable family background he was deemed expendable by the general.

The mercenaries slept only a few hours and prepared to do battle. At the same time the regular troops were making hurried preparations for withdrawal. Lieutenant Laras's orders were to hit the midorian army hard and then advance while they were scampering deep into enemy territory and hopefully assault the border town of Castille. This would force the midorian army to pursue them and maybe even fool them that the bulk of the army had indeed invaded Midor. After that assault they were to break up and then it would be every man for himself. The mercenaries were of course not told of this since the plan had all the markings of a suicide mission.
The attack near dawn took the Midorian army by suprise. From the shadows came a mighty war cry and then a great melee broke up in their camp. The magic user detachment of the Royalian army had cloaked the mercenaries in all kinds of protective magicks. The hit and run worked perfectly and the mercenaries began their thrusting maneuver into enemy territory with the Midorian army scampering to begin pursuit. During that time the regular army with their wounded slowly made they way towards safety. As the grey wolves neared Castille the Midorian army was in hot pursuit and very close. Cale ordered a hasty attack on Castille so they could then defend against the army from that position. Little did he know that a sizable force of reinforcements had arrived to the city a little earlier and were preparing to do battle as he was making his plans. The assault went horribly wrong, they had no siegecraft and the city had been fortified also quite recently. As the mercenaries were withdrawing the regular midorian army came from the rear and assaulted them. They were caught between the hammer and the anvil. The grey wolves were decimated and broke rank and began to flee in all directions. Few of the survivors ever made it back to Royale and even a few of those survived the secret court martials that were conjured up to keep the secret of what truly happened in that shameful day.
This incident was buried on both sides soon enough since it became appearant that the midorian general who was poisoned was in fact poisoned by one of his family's enemies. Also the leader of the midorian army fell out of favor soon afterwards and most of his acccomplisments were toned down in the official annals. The Royale side was not of course too keen to talk about their loss and also wiped the event from official history books....
....as for Cale.... he was injured and taken to the prison in Midor where he has spent the last 12 years forgotten and abandoned by all. A few of the prisoners were pardoned quite recently and since some of the records had been burned in a fire not long ago...prisoner #43523 was released since not many had any idea of who he was. So Cale is ready now .... to return to the land of the free. He is quite the changed man from that idealistic youth...
ooc : figured I should finish these stories :-) |
