Approx. lifespan for half-elves in Vives?
Posted: 03 Dec 2004 08:39 AM
Just have a quick question here. Was wondering how old an half-elf can get in Vives? According to DnD rules an half-elf lives to 180+ years. A elf lives about 700 years. Is age different here? Not that it matters much but could affect my roleplay.

Welcome to Vives!

Good question.... anyone of the Admins who feel like answering should also answer me this...

Do Elves Sleep? There are quite a few Elven players who do not think so....

If not.. what about Half Elves....

I know lifespans were discussed recently on the DM forums. And it was felt 600 years was about right for elves. So I guess about 150 for half elves.

Though adventuring PC elves are likely to be young elves, around the 200-250 mark maximum.

As for sleep, there is little real difference between sleep and reverie. Mainly its needed less, can function better without it over a few days, and not quite as unaware of your surroundings.

I for one have always been happy with elves rp'ing reverie in Vives...but you are just as subject to entering a dream state whilst in reverie, and just as susceptible to any adverse effects from something that stops you entering reverie for a prolonged period of time.

Not that any of that applies in any way to any storyline I might already have, or might be going to, DM. *grins*

Cheers,

Sirac

I was always under the belief that elves don't (and in fact can't) fall into a human-like sleep state. Hence their immunity to the sleep spells and spell-like abilities.

I don't think they even dream like the other races; in a planar game (which I know isn't applicable in Vives, but let's use it as an example) if the GM choses to have a demiplane of dreams, elves cannot enter without some hefty magic help.

That said; elves do have visions and other similar things in while in reverie, so they do have their own equivalent.

Sorry, I feel stupid, But I've been all over elves for a good majority of my life... (well, not all over,)) but I've never heard of Reverie... Is all that is to be explained explained previously in this thread, or is there more? I've never even heard the word, and would love to learn about it.

Reverie is also referred to as Trance by some people. It is the meditative state that elves use to refresh their body and mind. An elf usually spends about four hours in this state, and is partially aware of the world around them during this period.

You are 100% right CB. And as you said they can have visions and insights while in reverie. In Vives this is close enough to the "dreams" of humans that they are susceptible to attacks that might use such a weakness of the mortal races. This might be a stretch further than typical D&D elves...but is fine for Vives.

Alright then, what about sleep for half-elves? Reverie or normal sleep?

Depends on the Half-Elf, actually. How Elven a half-Elf is is almost entirely up to the player.

On a random note, I think that the D&D books says that elves do 'dream' of a sort. Eventually the thoughts that occur during their meditation because reflexive, in the manner of dreams. Hence elves aren't immune to any nightmare spells ;)

DefinitelySmiley.

e.g. even though brought up by her elven father and human mother, Solitaire is very much a human in appearance, knowledge and actions. She seeks to know more of elves, but does not fully undertand them or feel fully their kin. But that's just my personal spin on itSmiley.

Allright then, what if theres more "elf" in the half-elf than human. Then he would also live longer than a fifty fifty breed? :)
