Every person has something they fear more than anything else. For some it is death, for some it is pain, some fear heights, or closed in spaces, some fear love. For the large half-orc all his fears coalesced in the paleness and red eyes, and horrific power which radiated from a man with an average frame and a face which would not otherwise attact attention.
He had almost forgotten about HIM. He had hoped, with a hope that grew with each passing week, that when the Tears were found, and the gods were happy, and the world was put to rights, that HE had gone with those horrors. Hadn't the lands where those who walked with Undeath been assaulted, and the treasure that had been taken returned to its rightful place? Hadn't the voices that came with HIM been silenced?
Glordong stood inside the inn, near the fire which licked up the back of the fire place, and danced like a tiny demon. He was brushing the snow off his armour, his helm under his arm, and his swords strapped to his back when the door opened again, and a man dressed in shiny armour, with a white cloak, stepped into the inn.
Glordong smiled. He had followed Lord Arcane into the jaws of death before, they had fought side by side. The knight spoke few words, was always the first into battle, fought with a skill and ferocity matched by few, and always stood for what was Right and Good. Lord Arcane looked satisfied as he strode up next to the large half-orc, and Glordong answered his satisfaction with a smile.
"You wants to talk to me?" They had met in the snow and wind of Whipsnade Pass and the knight had pulled him away from chores he was to undertake for friends. Lord Arcane was always business-like and efficient, but there had been a note of urgency in his voice which had made Glordong leave his appointed task with apologies, but without hesitation.
They sat in two large chairs near the fire and the Lord Arcane began to speak. "Have you heard of Loccard?" Glordong answered that he had never heard the name before. "This one is very powerful and is hunting Macha Sparrowsong. He has taken her blood and is hungry for more. We do not know how to stop him, but one who does has told me that he will help, if I perform a task for him."
"Do you remember a man named Vandrane?" The blood drained from Glordong's face. He felt as though he had been pulled into a dark hole at the mention of that Name. "Glordong not likes him. Glordong not want to have anything to do with him." Lord Arcane looked at him, "Are you ok, you do not look well." "Stays away from HIM," answered the half-orc. "You think he is evil?" answered the knight. "Glordong knows HE is bads." "But how do you know this?" insisted the knight. "Glordong just Knows. Glordong thinks he is phumpuar."
"I know he is a vampire Glordong. He has promised me that he will help us defeat Loccard if I do one thing for him." The knight shifted uncomfortably in his chair. "He has promised that no harm will come to you." The words did not seem to register with the half-orc. "He said he would help us if I brought you to him."
The half-orc immediately sprang to his feet and backed away from the Lord Arcane as though he had been bitten by a snake. "Nos, Glordong never wants to see HIM agains!" "He has said no harm will come to you." The huge half-orc who could break rocks with his bare hands looked as though he was about to cry. "Glordong not wants to see HIM!"
Lord Arcane sat while the half-orc backed himself against the wall. For a few moments that seemed to last a life time Glordong's mind raced and the full horror of his situation dawned on him. If he did not agree to meet with HIM, HE would not help Lady Macha. If he did not agree to meet HIM, a fate worse than death would befall her. These thoughts mixed with the thought that his friend had betrayed him, that this one that he thought stood for all that was Right and Good had brought the thing he feared more than anything else in the world back into his life.
With an effort that took every ounce of his will Glordong asked weakly, "Is this the only ways to help Lady Machas?" He knew the answer before he asked the question. They say the bravery is not measured by the absence of fear, but by what we do when we are truly afraid. With every fibre of his being crying out in protest the half-orc spoke, the words dragged out like blood sucked through his skin, "Glordong will meets HIM."
As soon as the words left his mouth the inn was plunged into a darkness that no torch could push back, a darkness which left your limbs a stranger to your body, a darkness that Glordong knew could only come from one source... |
