Newbie on Vives Posted: 19 Nov 2004 06:43 AM |
Hi there everyone.
Even though I have RPed on a different server the last couple of months, I'm new here on Vives. I read the manual PDF file thingie. If I understand correctly, Vives is a world on it's own, not set in the FR. So everyone living here is from Vives originally, including my character. Is that right? So my char has been born and raised here on Vives and knows IC a lot about this place, whereas OOC I don't :)
I'll read a bit more in the manual later, but I'm afraid I'll making glaring mistakes about my char's history because of this. I like to create a bit of a history for my char in advance, just so I get a feel for her when I start RPing.
I'd like to make a halfling, so she'd be from brandibuck Vale, because she'll be a rogue/wizard she'll be worshipping Kaldair most likely. Are all Hin born and raised in Brandibuck, or could she be new to the place?
Sorry for all the questions, I just want to build up my character proprely, without too many mistakes :)
Sorcha. |

Brandibuck is sorta like the Halfling town. Granted, that doesn't mean Halfling CANNOT DEFINITELY be from other towns. In fact, halflings from elsewhere can provide very interesting storyline. Imagine a halfling from Ferein, or M'Gok Tukar.
But from what I understand, you're from that world. There's no planes, there's nowhere else. I've had a few characters that came from (undisclosed location beyond the sea) but I don't know how keen they are on that, really, but they're always from the world of Vives. |

It's possible to be from a different island on the world that is Vives, however bear in mind that most PCs on the server are from Vives, and that common Lore in many places is that Vives is the only island.
Welcome to Vives, Sorcha. I hope to see you IG soon.

Wouldn't everyone know everyone already than? I mean, woun't my char already know all the other Hin in Vrandibuck Vale? As in their mothers played with my mother, etc? How do others RP that? |

I don't know everyone in my RL town, and when I lived in a villiage I still didn't know everyone. :P
If you get to know the names of the NPCs, then you've got enough common ground with most people to be able to have a plausible "I've lived here my whole life" type of discussion.
Apart from that, don't worry about it. I've never once seen or had an issue where PCs stories clashed so badly that things stopped working IC.

I know, I worry too much about these things. I think I'm going to go with my usual story of being raised by parents who were travellers with their own pony drawn caravan. :)
See you IG, Sorcha |

Sounds like a good plan until you have had a chance to find your way around a bit .
Welcome to Vives .

Yeah - halflings can come from anywhere on Vives really =p
Tom got an intresting story *nods* but that's FOIG! :P
btw welcome ;)

yep, that should work - you can look at the map, and read about places on intrests in the PHB so you could throw 'em into your char's background :)

Re: Newbie on Vives Posted: 19 Nov 2004 09:35 AM |
yay, another halfling!! *grins*
I made Cora very low on Intelligence and Wisdom, in part because that sort of gave me an excuse to play a character who didn't know much about much at the same time as me not knowing much about much! My story for her is that she wandered a bit far from home in pursuit of a "kittie" and couldn't find her way back. :)
I'm thinking of making a somewhat more intelligent (and intelligible :P) character now I know a bit more about Vives. |

Impossible. I am too evil to be touched by mortal magic.

I think I'll go high Int, low Wis , first of all a rogue, but then wizard, because of the bubbles and the sparkles. her name will be Buttercup Bramblebar (Yes, the Bramblebars have been transferred to Vives) so as not to get confused with Dandelion, her sister (Who I won't play on Vives).
Hopefully I'll be playing her tonight. |
