Re: Public Announcement Posted: 23 May 2004 05:24 PM |
~~~The night was never something that mattered much in Midor.....just darkness is all...the old saying was theres nothing in the dark that is not there in the day.....crime knew its place in Midor...those choosing that life new the risks.....those days are now long forgotten....with the recent events that have troubled Midor in the past months, the local citizens have become more and more paranoid....for with each setting sun came something the locals were not used to.....FEAR. The Midoran government had done its best to reestablish faith and trust between them and its denizens...beefing up watches...offering bounties on local criminals...working with various informants to gain leads on the recent events...all to no avail....they then turned more aggressive....punsihments...public ones....the thinking was that it would deter any further incursions by those less civilized. They were about to see they were wrong once again.
Kalvis was a young man....he was not too big of build...some thought he was more of a poet than a warrior...so it caught his friends and family by surprise when he told them he had signed up for the Midoran Gaurd.....Kalvis felt he should do his part to protect the people of the city....a noble effort....he was further motivated when his good friend Eulyus was one of the guard that helped in the capture of Friel....a outlaw that had been sought after for so long and a list of offenses to match. Whatever the reason here he was....only his second night watch....it was especially crisp that night....not much wind at all...very quiet..and very dark. With torch in hand Kalvis made his way towards the entrance of Midor....passing by the public notice board he glanced to the recent list of those to be punished for recent offenses to the city and its people...some were to be flogged...others executed. Kalvis lowered his torch and began reading the names off to himself....so many names....too many. As his eyes dropped form line to line the names began to be blotched out by a dripping black substance...Kalvis frowned...he leaned in more with his torch...it was then he was able to make out what it was....it was the imprint of a rather large black hand...it covered nearly half the names on the list as well as the seal of Midor...such an act of disrespect would bring severe punishment......just then a slight snicker could be heard....Kalvis swung his torch around nervously.....peered into the night to see if he could catch a glimpse of who was responsible...nothing.....nothing but darkness....Kids he thought...playing a joke....nothing more.....stupid kids.....they are lucky i dont go after them he thought....yes a joke...thats what it was.....If only Kalvis was right...The nights were about to get darker.... |
Terror in Midor Posted: 24 May 2004 08:53 PM |
Good evening friends, I must say I could not help but feel that finally something was being done about all of the lawlessness that has been occurring in our fine city this day watching the foul Elven hag Elensi burn at upon the pyre. MIDORAN BE PRAISED!!!!
Though I am sad to report that not even twenty minutes after the executions, I was witness to the outcome of a most horrifying attack within the Midor law court.. our own Justice Grifin was carried from the court charred and bloodied to the temple.. the look upon his face is one I shall never forget... such terror. The guard present heard screaming and saw fire coming from the judges quarters in the law court I am told. Upon his arrival he found the judge laying in his own blood, soon after he was taken to the temple. Let us all pray for his recovery.
Midoran help us in these dark times.
Re: Terror in Midor Posted: 25 May 2004 10:18 AM |
Ask, and ye shall received.
The old saying that it is always darkest before the dawn is untrue. Dawn is always preceded by light in the east, even if the light comes only minutes before the sun rises. Jaycen Martic had seen many dawns in his years as a knight of Midoran, yet through all his dawns he had always taken this fact for granted. This morning, for the first time, he noticed the pre-dawn light in the east. He had not slept the night before, his mind lingering on his task. Today was the day of the first public executions in Midor in twenty year, and Jaycen's duty was to carry them out.
Part of him understood why these executions were necessary. These were, after all, criminals convicted of their crimes by the courts of Midor. To Jaycen, the guilt of the condemned was unquestionable. He even understood the logic behind the public executions. He recalled the White Bishop's address to the 1st Templar Division the day prior. That day the White Bishop had stood before the assembled paladins and reinforced their faith. The paladin's armor glistened through the stained glass of the Great Temple, causing a myriad of color and light to play in all corners of the temple. The knights listened with rapt attention as the White Bishop spoke.
Midor is threatened, and the Light grows dim. The people live in fear of darkness and danger. They fear the violence and chaos of the lawless and the evil of the damned. Not since the days of Aristi has such uncertainty and fear permeated these fair walls.
Tomorrow, we begin to reclaim our peace. Tomorrow, we begin to restore the people's confidence in holy Midor. Tomorrow, our fair city shall be marred by public executions. The first in twenty years, and I weep the fact that we must do this. But the lawless in Midor must see the justice if Midoran in action, lest they believe our resolve weakened.
Evildoers will look to Midor and see only strength when they hope for weakness. They will see courage when they hope for cowardness. They will see unity when they hope for divisiveness. They will see resolve, when they hope for our will to crumble.
That is why we do this. Not to be cruel, but to protect the peace and unity of our fair city. And protect it we shall...
Protect it we shall...
Jaycen squared his shoulders and approached the gallows. A page rushed to greet him. "Ho, there, sir knight. A message for you from the Tribunal." The page handed Jaycen a scroll case and bowed before departing. Jaycen examined the scroll case carefully. It bore the seal of the High Court of Midor. He remove the scroll and unrolled it, reading the contents.
It was a list of the condemned. One addition, and one subtraction from the original list. The elf, Gabril Petra, had apparently been found innocent by the Tribunal at the last minute. The Tribunal had returned her possessions and given enough gold to buy passage to Ferein. A new addition to the list surprised Jaycen. It was a young man accused of various violent crimes. And so another life was put on the block in service to Midoran's justice.
The light in the east signaled dawn's approached. He knew it would be a difficult morning. Many observers would not have the stomach for the executions, while others would enjoy them far too much. Some would not believe in the guilt of the accused, while others would desire these deaths too much. But in the end, Jaycen was confident that justice would be served.
As the morning proceeded, the criminal Barradin Holdfast was hanged with little struggle and no sign of repentance. After his body was removed, Jaycen announced the commuted sentence of the elf, Gabril Petra. But the final execution was the one that still haunted the paladin.
Joradin was a young man with a boy-like look. He hardly looked the criminal he was convicted of being. Jaycen could not ignore the frightened look in his eyes as he franticly surveyed the crowd as the noose was placed around his neck. The young criminal locked gazes with Blanche La Belle, the young priestess of Midoran. Jaycen was amazed that Mother La Belle stayed to witness the execution. He realized then that she was stronger then she appeared. Blanche called out to Joradin, "Please....repent yourself...please." The man continued to look into her eyes. "please....Everyone has a second chance....to live better.... " she extolled, "Only you can accept it!"
"I...I..." croaked Joradin. His eyes darted around the crowd, only to fall again on Blanche. "I repent! I repent! Midoran, please forgive me!" Jacyen smiled slightly; the boy would be forgiven if his heart was true. But justice must still be carried out, and a repentant heart would not supplement just punishment for his crimes.
He looked up at the man, You have done well, son. But Midoran's justice must be upheld. Your repentance has purchased your freedom, however, to the next life." With a curt nod, the nearby guard pulled the lever, causing the gallows floor to fall out from under the criminal. Go with Midoran, prayed the knight as Joradin's body swung lifelessly from the gallows. With that, the first public execution in Midor was complete. Jaycen ignored the workers that were removing the bodies for burial preparations at the temple. Justice was done today, of that he knew. It was harsh, but sometimes, maintaining order required harshness. And sometimes, violence was the only way to bring about order. Jaycen did not like it, but he knew it was something he must face. The White Bishop's words had bolstered his determination and faith. But still, he didn't have to like it...right?
The sun was fully in the sky by the time Jaycen returned to his quarters. Another dawn had come and gone, but this time something was different. Now he knew that light was a herald of the dawn. Yet after watching the young man swinging from the gallows, he knew there was no light yet. |
