I mean heck, I would rp more if I knew it would help me meet some of my own personal agenda of being a high level char. And I love to rp. Let capatilism live! You can make a difference, you are listened (and yes, lower character aren't "that" listened to IC... unfortunately) you can shine in a way. Yes, that's cool to have RP exp gifts! It soothes your soul and let you say "Man, I made something good hehehe!" So yes, it's good! BUT. Yes, but. But is that the only reason you'll do roleplay? To have a high level character? I don't think so. Well, I hope so. Let's take my example here: Blanche, a little priestress of Midoran, always clean the temple when she's there. She prays and always say hi to the knights. She is always concerned about those in need, and especially the little Cara. When she goes to the Unicorn Inn, she always plays with Cara and her teddy bear (Yes, Blanche found it and now she is so happy, Cara always greet her) She always smiles but she is really often sick, so she coughs really often, poor her... Do any DM see her? About 3% of the time. Maybe more, I don't know. I had some rp xp when I was speaking to myself (thanks to Big brother Vives) and I didn't have any d**n clue that a DM was on the server (and I still don'T know how to see that!! o_O) The moral of this story: Always rp, you never know when there's a dm! ;) Frodo : What are we holding on to, Sam? Posted: 23 Mar 2004 04:16 AM Aren is a proverbially comical genius. I love being around him just for that. Anyway, back to the plot of the post. The Relationship Dillemma Vives is an RP server. High RP is what its about. So there needs to be a little bit of symbiosis here. Im going to say how I think it should work (that is not to say this is to dis-similar to Vives). The Players Role Players on the server should be here because they enjoy RPing as much killing stuff . Evar is just as happy blowing stuff up as he is sitting and debating finer points of what ever topic arises. You should also treat NPCs no less than PCs and speak to them. [Just a quick aside , RP does not mean procrastinating. Having lengthy discussions about what to do next (unless its tactical) is not RPing. Those of you, and you know who you are, that stand around wanting to do nothing are not RPing you're just being dull]. The DMs Part On the other hand, if DMs wish to maintain a High RP server, there does need to be reward for it. The truth is people want to improve their characters. They are adventurers and that is what adventurers do. This is not necessarily power-gaming its just the whole point of the game. Some, and I include myself in this, would -much- rather do this through role-play rather than combat. It is more fun. I would at least like a half and half split. The problem is, you can become dwarfed by those who just go around fighting if your standing around chatting. Does this not create a paradox? Im not pointing the finger but I know some people who hardly ever RP but are really high level. Then kind of do their obligatory bit. If you want the good RPers to be the central part of the world, give them a way to earn it. The Prognosis All of this said; I think Vives is like this to a big extent. I did receive a nice RP bonus for a 2 hour long conversation with another PC. The problem is DMs cant be everywhere at once. The answer I think it perhaps to have a few more RP type quests, rather than go kill all the gypsies and bring me back X. This would at least solve some of the problem. The other solution is to perhaps have a few more part-time DMs. Perhaps they wont be allowed to give XP but can run small events and then report back to others who can award the XP. Posted: 23 Mar 2004 06:29 AM well - I agree that there should be mroe RP falvoured scripted quests.. but it not really helping.. I mean.. how many of you thougt before going to whack some bats? I know my druid refused... or how many of the PCs would actually go and help the young girl and bring her the teddy bear back? there are folks who wont really give a dang.. and yes.. more RP rewards might work.. but a. you cant know if there is a DM around.. and be sure that the DMs arent there 100% of the time.. b. as you said - just standing there doesnt mean you are RPing. c. I have seen ppl complaining they talked and didnt get XP.. I am not going to reward someone who sits there and RPs for the XP... I know it is fun to get a reward, but you shouldnt be there for the reward.. - also.. this is a reward.. I know I give this reward when I am there as a DM and see 'special' RP.. not someone saying 'hello' in halfling accent. these are bonuses that are out there to reward those that responisble for the RP - the players. you are not suposed to expect that you will get rp rewards.. I mean.. you are suposed to just play.. and then when you get a reward it will be something special.. i.e not like a dog doing tricks for gifts... but like a child getting gifts from time to time.. as a surprise. I think it is much funner than doing tricks for food. ;) I usually give rather 'big' rewards and dont do it too often.. and I prefer rewarding in other ways... like giving players 'special' quests concerning their chars.. or trying to help/encourage/run their requests. (I think it is funner than xp - but maybe that's just me ) also.. when a party RPs not everyone get the same amount of reward.. not everyone get a reward. also - there are folks who RP while they are alone.. this is something that gets rewarded as well. (i.e. no need to be in a party to RP) but aye - point taken.. I will try to give smaller rewards and give them out more often and generaly increase the amount of xp given out. Posted: 23 Mar 2004 06:47 AM I quite agree with you Dens, simply talking is not RPing. And I know lots of people make that mistake. Additionally some people do quirky things in the hope of XP, such as praying in their language etc. These sort of things should be agiven and done for the spirit of RPing. An example, Tiggy, Evars familiar can actually talk. He often summons him and has conversations with it, or more often Tiggy talks to others. Why? Well its certainly not for the XP, its the surprise factor. You can guarentee if Evar meets a less than hostile Orc, out comes Tiggy. The reactions (which are always well played) are priceless. My point is a little simpler than that. I think people are avoiding RPing because they get more XP from killing stuff. RPing is more fun. But its not much fun staying the same level. And RP XP is the only way of overcoming this. The dillemma is lack of DMs with time (which is more than understandable). How about, The High Priest of Midoran, instead (or as well as) asking you to go kill Narghul, instead he asks you to visit the library and do some research for him, then come back and discuss your findings. From the conversation string he will be able to tell if you have done it. Or mystery solving in which parties will be forced to RP together? The other is like I said to make a few part time DMs with very limited powers. Its not that RP should be in pursuit of XP (because I agree that is wrong) its that those who wish to RP rather than combat ought to be given a way of at least being rewarded for it else those that arent will get all the XP and those that do wont (which surely is what Vives wishes to avoid). Posted: 23 Mar 2004 07:04 AM well - the preist idea could work.. but there is a problem - it is not a 'unique quest' and players will just hear one player saying it.. or they will discover it with their other char.. and then they wont really RP finding the info.. or what ever is needed. about mystery solving - again, it will kinda ruin it if players will know the plot after solving it with their other PCs.. or after hearing the story.. It is enough that one player will say that either IG or OOG - and it will ruin the idea for others. (/ snip) being nit-picky here, but why? why shouldnt my character, after having said conversation with the high priest or solved said mystery go up to another character & say, "hey, it was neat, XY&Z just happened." to not do that would be metagaming on known XP. the sort of, 'oh, i know this gives XP, so i won't talk about it, even if my character would find it fascinating to talk about. to be clear: i am not advocating that characters give each other hints about quests. This is just the reality of online worlds with quests that reset. You can still RP through it. "Oh I remember when Old Such and Such asked me to do such similar tasks. I found the Midoran Library was quite helpful". How is that metagaming? Its RPing within the confines of PW without destroying the game for others. Never argue with an idiot. "that and that? oh it's easy blablablabla" some chars will choose c because it is more IC for them.. Posted: 23 Mar 2004 02:00 PM nah, nah... what yr looking for Akril, is very findable. its just that quests with endings that are adventure equivalent of one-liners dont work in good RP worlds. but, persistent RP quests are quite do-able. * i wonder if there could a script written to pull 3 random bits of info out of the library & require a player to "research" it. the random-ness would change the interaction (to some extent) every time. * quests using the persuade skill would also accomplish this. i know, its a limited quest b/c only so many char's have their persuade skill beefed up, but its definately more in the RP/social end of things. * & again, as Dens pointed out, one-shot RP events would be great. Then again, I would love to see a character run as a private investigator for these quests -- a classic hard-drinking, womanizing, down-on-his-luck film noir one. a real Humphrey Gnom-gart (*groans*). * another aside, a diplomatic quest could also do this -- imagine if human & elves *were* having tensions raised -- Midor could take the building up of Ferein as some sabre-rattling actions. or if the half-orcs & Gladden Farms (is that the name?) needed tensions toned down. you get the idea. anyway, the options are nearly limitless for more XP gifts from built-in RP quests.
