Action Server Rant
Posted: 16 Jan 2004 03:29 PM
So I was taking a break from my writing, and wanted to try out how a Dwarven Defender feels. Knowing Vives is more RP and slow level progression, I figured my best bet for some good hack n' slash to releive the stress of sitting all day was to try an action server!

Oh my did I forget how fun they were! Dual weilding holy avenger katanas, everyone in full plate, dragon slippers, and dueling all over the land because who cares if you respawn at level 25! Anyways I got to level 8 in about 3 hours, at which point I was exploring around some of the more far reaching areas. By this time XP had slowed down dramatically (For an action server mind you), and things got harder, people obviously needing to party at this point. Well I meet up with a cleric and a ranger and we go fight a tad, and the two start complaining.

Cleric: This server sucks. I like a challenge but level progression is too slow
Ranger: Yeah really, they'll just fail. You can't have a good competitive server when it takes forever to level. It took my other character over TWO MONTHS to get level 20.
Cleric: That's just dumb, really. They need to learn what they're doing.

At this point, chuckling to myself knowing some people haven't gotten 15 in under 6 months of gameplay in Vives, I chime in that "You don't know level progression until you try a good RP server."

At which point they start bashing RP servers and the people that frequent them. So I retaliate verbally, and they do too. After a few minutes a few plate mail wearing holy avenger suckers come walking through and start bashing RP servers as well, although one of them (Out of 4) says they are fun. A mass PK fest ensues, at which point I am given a 'tell' by a DM saying "Get out of here RP a$$hole".

So what fun that was! Remember when you start to level slow, or all you have to do during the day is collect pelts, do DM quests whether small or large, or spend a bit of time RP'ing with some nice folks, remember how lucky you are. You may not be able to get to level 20 or even 15 in a matter of 2 months, but by god at least we aren't all wearing dragon slippers, 20/- resist all belts, and weilding dual holy avengers to look like every other level 20Tongue out.

albinoblacksheep.com? Gotta love itSmiley And those Holy Avengers? Bah, I piss on them! I was actually doing PnP with my old man and friends, and I find a DRAGON SLAYER!!! Huzzah! Then my sister uses shape-stone to wrap around a troll JUST as I was swinging, so it gets caught. By the time I get it back out, it's severely weakened. I find an unknown potion, so I pour it on the blade. Naturally, it screams, and dies. The moral of this story? Don't get items that are too good to be believable!

Heh, a friend of mine invited me on an action server but I declined. I mean I do like to progress as do most folk, but getting to level 20 in a matter of weeks....

So here is my rant:

There are two things I find boring: one is nearly no progress at all and the other one servers like those Fen gave a description of. In the end they're quite alike. I've been on a HCR server where people looked at you as though you had the plague when you said hi to them. And why? Well because they formed those little groups of their own and if you weren't known as a 'regular' they'd never look twice at you. Oh that's not true! When you died there was always someone to pick your body clean.

Then there were the static quests. People stood in line to do them over and over again. If you were a newbie you might get a shot at it in lets say five years of real time? Ok slightly exaggerating here, but you get my point. And of course without help from anyone you never got higher than level 2. Ah I still have fond memories about those days of slaying a badger, trying to get some food, a can of water and a few gp to rest in the inn. Rinse and repeat :P

Seriously though, I think those are just as bad as the action servers. Yes you can roleplay your character. No, you don't need levels to develop a personality. But I swear if all you can do on a server is run from the tavern to the inn and otherwise talk on the town square then it becomes very tiresome. I didn't see anything outside town. Not a thing. Oh I lie. I did see something once! Unfortunately the gate closed, I had no key, there was no way inside again and there was a nice dire wolf awaiting my level 2 cleric. If you want to place bets on who won that fight, feel free to do so. ;)

I'm still very grateful to Aria that she advertised on the Ladies of Neverwinter forum. I had about given up hope of finding a PW that was really cool. Well ladies and gentlemen, Vives has it. You have RP, you have action, you can see the world (even on your own you can see quite a bit), people talk to you and don't sneer at you because it's your first time on the server. I think my second post here was how cool I found Vives. I can only say it has remained so and I believe (and certainly hope so) that it will.

Now where the hell can I find two holy katanas of decapitation (DC 4600)? I need them because, uhm, Dias would look cool with them. Yeah!

Luther McIath: I see, so [X is] the right person in the wrong place with the wrong people at the wrong time.

[Fictrix] ... And can speak French, like both! Wait, I mean Elven.

I too have been on servers where the players were elitist assh*les and just stood around in their lil groups. Then there are the servers where you can reach level 20 in a matter of hours. All I can say is WHY? What's the fun in having a character that has all the peronality of a spreadsheet?

"Ooo, I can kill this this and this so easy" Well good for you, now go get a personality a$ monkey.

A lot of it depends on whether the player has the personality of a spreadsheet or not. :P

Question Authority!

True, if the player has all the personality of wet cardboard then I don't think thier characters will ever have a chance for a personality.

Well, im sure there is something about the fact that some of us played or own the Pen and paper Dungeon and Dragon ? Just as an example, the best character I ever had in PnP was a wizard level 10 that took me month of playing to reach tehre, even surviving an encounter with a white dragon. But then, one day i failed a saving throw vs a banshee cry and lost him. What i mean by that is that before nwn, the uber character that we see level 20 and more where not as frequent, in fact most of us never had one of there uber char in pnp.

There is the fact too that roleplaying with buddys and a Dm is what made DnD the most popular game in is category and where the fun was realy coming from for PnP. But we know that Nwn is nothing like PnP because of many factors, and we should reconize that people that never had the touch of DnD true spirit cant realy what wrong with "powergaming". However, the way people bashed at Fen; even a Dm taking part of this is an pure example of how people can be kid sometime i.e.: have you ever heard a youngster telling to not breath IS air ?

Well as for my opinion on Rp Server vs Action Server, i would say that like in all things, we should always try to aim for Balance. Now i wont start on the Severe death penalitie on Vives 'cause everything esle is so great ;)

Take Care

On the PnP side of things, I've never gotten to play, only DM (It's because I typically can't stand other DM's, go figure). Usually I play low level groups, with really low level progression for my players, because in all honesty, its the low levels that are the most fun (Level 3-6).

For all the mud slinging folks tend to do to Bioware, you have to give them credit for making a game that allows for as much diversity and alteration as NWN does. We very well could all be sitting on Ultima Online and staring at the same old garbage day after day. Instead, we get to come to a place that is dictated solely by the admin and players that make it their home. So kudos to Bioware for making the first game that allows people to take it as far as their imagination allows. First online game I can say that has done this since mudding.

Many folks hit on the positives of Vives in the posts above. I have never found a server that allows for the diversity of players we have here. From those that enjoy the many areas and encounters created, to those that enjoy roleplaying as in depth as they wish to. We all have complaints, and all have things we wish to see either added in or resolved here. But the truth is, we are lucky that many of the staff take their time to provide this world for us. So before any of us start mutterin about, this chest is still trapped, or my monk can't level as easy as that fighter...remember that you are here for a reason. And thats probably because this place has it balanced more than most others.

I'm a veteran of PnP of about 13-15 years and I can say in all honesty that out of all the servers out thjere, Vives is the one that most closely resembles the kind of atmosphere you get in a PnP game. I think the key to Vives success is the way the players get along.

I've play PnP for years as well. And I'll say that what is probably my favorite things about Vives is the lack of a rushed feeling that you have on other servers. It has a feeling that is relaxed enough to get into the kind of situations that YOUR PC would get into, not because of their class or level, but just because of who you are creating them to be. Maybe that's what feels the most like PnP to me.
