A warning on crafting and economy:
This is indeed a challenging problem, and I have not solved it. Given our desire to get rolling soon. Crafting will not likely be in the first release. Both the technical issues of a crafting system, AND the design problem of the economics is a problem we will have to focus on before anything is implemented.
Perfect is the enemy of the good, and so in my view we'll be better off releasing with a limited set of features, to expand as we go. |

I'm not saying that this would fix or balance economical issues, but these are idea's that float around in my head when I am in DM mode I think it would be very interesting to
a) become more realistic as to how much actual gold a player can have on their person, it always made me chuckle that I could only carry a set amount of equipment, but as much gold as I wanted. (this would also slow down the issue where rogues tend to make the most money the fastest, because they could carry unlimited gold taken from the shadows.
b)set up banking in such a way that promissory notes or "checks" (which would be kept in inventory) can be used to "transport" large sums of currency. This would also vitalize the gem trade as one gem could replace large quantities of gold.
c) Taxes. Any time a player buys, sells or deposits money in the bank, it is taxed at whatever rate helps the DM's keep the economy in check. Running a city is expensive, and the relative safety that city offers even more so. Property taxes for store owners at the very least is a must.
d) In addition, any group or person coming into a city with LOADS of loot, or a large shipment, would be searched wouldn't they? Allowing large amounts of things into a city without being sure it is safe, or not contraband would surely bring the ire of the lord. spot checks of players entering cities with large quantities of goods, and possibly having some of it "quarantined until further inspected" could be an interesting way to play with the economy.
and imagine the fun would be smugglers might TRY to have with it? Not that I would ever ...
just a thought |

Here is an interesting read in regards to economy in NWN 2 PW which I am sure can be applied to NWN 1.

| Regarding being searched by guards, don't forget an option to brib the guards based on the appropriate skill check. |

Skill? What is skill if you have the funds?
Unless you are talking about the pickpocket check for retrieving the bribe from the guard for later use. |

- make the primary source of healing HP to be other characters with healing spells. (healing kits do not heal hit points. healing potions only crafted by someone with the spell. regeneration is not found on items, resting does not return full hit points except for in certain areas)
I'm not so much a fan of that. One, if its up as a PW then non clerics cant play without others. Two, often times being a battlefield "medic" is a part of a character and their story. Three, I'd never be able to use bannages and oinkmunts !
Magic is all around us in every living thing even in our mundane world. There are plants and herbs that heal in the real world, granted not all at once like a healing kit, but whatever world is created I'm assuming it is fantasy and at least " low magic". "Low Magic" is a lot higher setting than the real world uses. |

| That being said , toning down healing kits to fit the magic level of the world is a completely different thing than disabling them entirely. If the problem is how much they heal after a character has poured -tons- of points into the healing skill. |

healing kits:
depends on how it plays in game. For Arnheim it worked very well. Healing kits did the following: (1) target a PC at 0 or less hitpoints and stop them from bleeding to death (2) remove poison (3) remove disease
Not saying that Vives has to have the same thing, but this is in my opinion the direction to go in. To take Vives away from Diablo style play and towards pen and paper style group play. |

| Pen and paper style group play is great... around a table , or on a server that runs only for scheduled sessions. We have to ask ourselves do we want it to be a PW or something only run for gaming sessions. And if its to be PW we have to take into account the age of the game and overall lack of player base. |

Indeed this is the time to talk over what we want to do. That said, I don't think those play styles are mutually exclusive. And I also think that even now if a world is done right, we could draw in a good number of players. I've seen it happen. Most PWs don't have the special sauce. The good ones stand out and tend to draw players out of the woodwork.
Vives can have that life again. |

I agree the playstyles are not mutually exclusive. I just fear that if we go too far the pen and paper party style it will prevent those who don't get to play at the popular gaming times from being able to enjoy theirselves / explore the world (within reason of course) / and develop their characters within the living, breathing world. (areas and npcs even if no other pcs are on).
That said I acknowledge you have a better understanding of the current NWN community considering you have been a part of it in recent times and I have not. |

I see your point too, Gasher. And I want to accommodate as many play styles as possible. Vives was a vibrant place because it managed to do that with out compromising the over all vision.
As long as we work at this together to build something that we will all enjoy, I think we'll be successful. Healing kits are certainly not a hill I want to die over. |

The accommodating as many play styles as possible is something Vives did extraordinarily well, as you said, without compromising the over all role play is foremost and the world is dangerous so party up ideals.
If it's going to be a PW I strongly believe it has to also accommodate solo play from all classes within reason. The earlier ideas of flagging a pc as only on during dm event is fine, even great, as long as the player also can have "solo and spur of the moment group trip pcs to play in non optimal hours / days. |
