The contents of the scroll given out at Nallamne read as follows:
This scroll... obviously ancient, bears a lengthy script which is, unfortunately, unknown to those of current times, as well as numerous arcane and divine glyphs and some diagrams which are so aged as to be totally obscure.
Fortunately, a scholar has in times past made a study of the item and made elven annotation upon it, some of which is still legible.
"....would I had known the nature of the script in my younger days.... and yet, no matter, the tongue of those who do not see the light is at best obscure..."
"....there the soulstone lies...."
"....there may be now only one who knows... .... though I dare not.... Vaas....."

((EDIT - they ARE the pro Guk group, Jerome is using them, they just don't know it :P))
But currently the way the plot is worked, Jerome is doomed to fail. Need to think, when less tired, how I am going to work this. Mykal, how p*ssed is Guk likely to be at Jerome when I fail, if it is as a direct result of Numen interfering. Which as Friel kept the stone he gave her, is the most likely thing to happen.
I want Barnas to "win" at the end, and he is totally expecting a betrayal from me. In fact, I think he is most nervous at the fact I am being very determined to keep him alive at the moment (so I can get him and the stone back to Nebwood to be sacrificed to heal Guk). But the fact I am being so eager to keep him alive is really keeping him on edge! *grins*
So need a twist still. If anyone has any bright ideas let me know, otherwise will think about it tomorrow. But ideally need a plot that stops my Guk priest being squashed by his god, keeps Barnas guessing and on edge til the very end, and allows him to win and get Friels soul back.
Cheers,

I can get together a small Desthades's group, but it hardly seems necessary now to have two groups. It seems to me the one group, being duped by Jerome, is doing just fine. What I can do is get a single person or a few people to represent Desthades. They can inform Fri'el of the true nature of the Soulstone.
Or, a more likely option would be to provide some IG clues for Fri'el and the others regarding Jerome's true intent. Have him bleed from the forehead a bit more publicly at the right time (Jerome now bleeds as his master, who was wounded in the head by an arrow of Aros, bleeds.) Allow for some unnatural occurances to happen around Jerome, like undead specificly not attacking him.
Basicly, the one group plan, with some outside forces acting around it, is a simpler, more managable version of the plot that still accomplishes oure goals.
But currently the way the plot is worked, Jerome is doomed to fail. Need to think, when less tired, how I am going to work this.

I'm guessing that Gukathul will be highly pissed off at Jerome. But, good priests are hard to find. So he could go many ways, from skinning Jerome alive and using the remains for a nice paint canvas to capturing his soul in exchange for Fri'el's. Jerome can go on, in one form or another, but his existance if he fails will not be plesant.
So far it sounds like you're doing a wonderful job, Benny and Sirac. Keep up the good work.

Careful..
We don't want to sacrifice a player for this if possible.
Could not Jerome be punished without tipping his hand (assuming it has not been tipped already)?
A second group could serve to distract from the betrayal that is supposed to happen within the current group, especially if it is known to the current group that they are not alone in their search.

Re: (some) DMs: Barnas does not have access to this forum Posted: 13 Apr 2005 04:28 AM |
Yea, I am kinda in a bind here. Am sure we all agree that whilst we want Barnas to feel a genuine fear of Friel dying, the last thing we want to do is permanently kill her. Which is what would happen if Jerome were to succeed. So he has to fail. The most likely way he will fail, is through the direct intervention of Nu'men, who is virtually a god in his own right, as he has ((**censored so players can read**)), though still chooses to serve / ally with Menarok. I personally think that after initial anger, Gukathul would realise that a human priest had no chance against Nu'men. And as that priest was the one that brought all four tears of elbereth to Guk, and arranged the ambush and massacre of the group to attack the desert crypt, and has generally served well, he might be lenient. I dont mind consequences for Jerome, they can be fun to play out. But dont want it to be too harsh / too great a loss of face for what is an impossible situation for him.
Anyway, Jerome is aware he has few allies as things stand. And is facing a really difficult challenge, especially since becoming suspicious of that dang stone always circling Fr'iel, that she was willing to risk everything for to keep.

death, slaughter and mayhem.
Sirac told me to step up the challenge, and then later claimed that he wanted it stepped down. I counted at least 16 kills. 20 or more if you believe Benny.
oh? you mean Fri'el?
Jerome got the stone and ran away leaving the others to their doom
Jerome has gone over to Nu'men, since Guk is always giving impossible tasks and gave the stone to him.
Nu'men told Fri'el how to get her soul back
When she got it back, she was bombarded with words from three different voices and given the choice of following Guk, Menarok, or Elbereth.
She chose poorly. She went with Elbereth.
Sirac and Sol may post their own summary in better detail.

Re: (some) DMs: Barnas does not have access to this forum Posted: 18 Apr 2005 02:42 AM |
Think pdw sums it up quite succinctly. A lot of what happened was spur of the moment, but worked well enough. :0)
Jerome (reluctantly) turned from Gukathul, when caught by Nu'men, believing he had no other choice. In return he has been promised protection by both Nu'men and Menarok, a promise they will keep so long as he proves useful. As Jerome's entire existence has been based on deceit, this should work well for him. As long as Friel can be kept quiet, as she found out the truth, joining only about 3 or 4 characters that know the truth about Jerome. She can expect a friendly message from Nu'men not to make an enemy of him.
Fr'iel back to being goodly, and following Elbereth, should be very interesting. Was not the choice I expected. But Guk and Elb could release her soul by simply being asked...Guk because he put it there and Elbereth because she is Guk's natural enemy...Menarok however told her she would have to sacrifice another soul into the stone to free herself and serve him. Seemed to be too much for her, though leave it to B to confirm if that was the case.
Siam was told by Nu'men to return to Desthades, and tell him that Guk would not benefit from the stone. But neither would he. And that was as good a result as he could hope for. Poor Siam wandered into the inn, muttered something about the soul stone, spent the next half hour being interrogated and revealed as an undead. And generally had no chance whatsoever. But he tried, even if he did need to be spoonfed a little to stop him being perma dead, which Friel definitely was considering! :0)

Well, that's pretty much it.
Fri'el does really like Nu'men, but if he was seriously wanting her to turn to him, he miscalculated- whatever morality was left in souless-Fri'el (Not much) was just too repulsed by the notion of putting another through what she'd gone through for her to choose that path.

I thought ooc it would be too easy a choice for Friel otherwise. And Menarok is the god of all evil...if you had morality holding you back, you werent the right gal for him! *grins*
And IC it made sense that Guk and Elbereth could release you with little effort. But Menarok was interfering in their game really, and had to find a way to "cheat" your soul free.
But dont worry, neither Menarok nor Nu'men give up easily. One setback does not a defeat make... *grins evilly*
Oh, Mykal, be aware pdw, playing Guk, threatened Friel with vengeance for her choice...he can tell you exactly what he said.

Another thing to come from last nights event, pdw said it is possible to make it so that followers of one god cannot res followers of another. Worth implementing for Vives? For the following at least:
Naruth - Vilyave - Helkris Gukathul - Elbereth Tarik - Aros Midoran - Gruin?
Thoughts, and any other suggestions? And pdw, in rare events where necessary, is it easy to edit changes of deity?

I like the idea of this, Elvalia has in the past spoken to Macha on occasions where they've travelled together and made it quite clear that if she falls she wants nothing to do with anyone involved with Tarik bringing her back, Elrith was a little peeved with Ras for doing the same last night, though being as she's not exactly Elbereth's favourite elf that's more of a personal bias.
To my mind it should be difficult for a follower of Aros or Tarik to raise non elven PC's as well given their bias against other races, particularly humans - would be cool if the could be implemented somehow |

The OOC lounge has a device for setting the diety of the player. Just hop up there and set the diety to your own preference.
Also, you can of course exclude DM's or DM possessed NPC's from such a check.
You can also ensure that the cleric has a diety (or belief system), to ensure that the player has a diety before casting raise/rez
I can also modify the vives dm tool to allow a DM to assign/change a diety for the player on the fly, or temporarily set a flag that would allow that priest to raise whoever he likes for hte next rez.
Which one would you like?

You can make it as simple or as complicated as you like.
I'd prefer to keep it simpler (diety only) as taking into account something like
- diety (10 dieties? 100 combination) - alignment (9 alignments? 81 combinations) - race (6 races, 36 combinations)
would turn the check conditions into a hairy mess. (worst case in this example, 291,600 unique states)

I love the idea that you must have a deity chosen to be able to res at all. As long as we announce this to PCs a few days before, and tell them to go to the ooc lounge if this is not the case. As I had no idea you could do that, probable some other players dont either.
Midoran / Menarok? Not bothered if that is the case. Just wasnt aware they were dire enemies? As Midoran is actually evil, as Menarok I have never considered him a diametric opposite? Happy to adopt that approach if wanted by the Midorans though? Expect him to stir up trouble, and spread all kinds of lies about Midoran happenings if that is to be the case....

Midoran and Menarok are competitors for Midor.
Midoran outfoxed Menarok and Gukathul when they were fighting for the city won it from them.
At them moment, Midoran is still "good". It wouldnt do to go around helping someone who is obviously "evil" |

Best not to have the two opposed. Make people wonder just why Midoran can help Menarok. And after all, Midoran's LG identity will not survive too long after he returns and crushes the rebels.

Another DM conspiracy thread, I have edited out the one bit that would reveal too much to the players.

| Lots of good stuff here, including how we changed the game mechanics. |
